In this paper we discuss bias-corrected estimators for the regression and the dispersion parameters in an extended class of dispersion models (Jorgensen, 1997b). This class extends the regular dispersion models by letting the dispersion parameter vary throughout the observations, and contains the dispersion models as particular case. General formulae for the O(n(-1)) bias are obtained explicitly in dispersion models with dispersion covariates, which generalize previous results obtained by Botter and Cordeiro (1998), Cordeiro and McCullagh (1991), Cordeiro and Vasconcellos (1999), and Paula (1992). The practical use of the formulae is that we can derive closed-form expressions for the O(n(-1)) biases of the maximum likelihood estimators of the regression and dispersion parameters when the information matrix has a closed-form. Various expressions for the O(n(-1)) biases are given for special models. The formulae have advantages for numerical purposes because they require only a supplementary weighted linear regression. We also compare these bias-corrected estimators with two different estimators which are also bias-free to order O(n(-1)) that are based on bootstrap methods. These estimators are compared by simulation. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Let X be a compact Hausdorff space, Y be a connected topological manifold, f : X -> Y be a map between closed manifolds and a is an element of Y. The vanishing of the Nielsen root number N(f; a) implies that f is homotopic to a root free map h, i.e., h similar to f and h(-1) (a) = empty set. In this paper, we prove an equivariant analog of this result for G-maps between G-spaces where G is a finite group. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effects of nitrosative species on cyt c structure and peroxidase activity were investigated here in the presence of O(2)(center dot-) and anionic and zwitterionic vesicles. Nitrosative species were generated by 3-morpholinesydnonymine (SIN1) decomposition, using cyt c heme iron and/or molecular oxygen as electron acceptor. Far-and near-UV CD spectra of SIN1-treated cyt c revealed respectively a slight decrease of a-helix content (from 39 to 34%) and changes in the tryptophan structure accompanied by increased fluorescence. The Soret CD spectra displayed a significant decrease of the positive signal at 403 nm. EPR spectra revealed the presence of a low-spin cyt c form (S = 1/2) with g(1) = 2.736, g(2) = 2.465, and g(3) = 2.058 after incubation with SIN1. These data suggest that the concomitant presence of NO(center dot) and O(2)(center dot-) generated from dissolved oxygen, in a system containing cyt c and liposomes, promotes chemical and conformational modi. cations in cyt c, resulting in a hypothetical bis-histidine hexacoordinated heme iron. We also show that, paradoxically, O(2)(center dot-) prevents not only membrane lipoperoxidation by peroxide-derived radicals but also oxidation of cyt c itself due to the ability of O(2)(center dot-) to reduce heme iron. Finally, lipoperoxidation measurements showed that, although it is a more efficient peroxidase, SIN1-treated cyt c is not more effective than native cyt c in promoting damage to anionic liposomes in the presence of tert-ButylOOH, probably due to loss of affinity with negatively charged lipids. In the Eplerenone Post-Acute Myocardial Infarction Heart Failure Efficacy and Survival Study ( n = 6632), eplerenone- associated reduction in all- cause mortality was significantly greater in those with a history of hypertension ( Hx- HTN). There were 4007 patients with Hx- HTN ( eplerenone: n = 1983) and 2625 patients without Hx- HTN ( eplerenone: n = 1336). Propensity scores for eplerenone use, separately calculated for patients with and without Hx- HTN, were used to assemble matched cohorts of 1838 and 1176 pairs of patients. In patients with Hx- HTN, all- cause mortality occurred in 18% of patients treated with placebo ( rate, 1430/ 10 000 person- years) and 14% of patients treated with eplerenone ( rate, 1058/ 10 000 person- years) during 2350 and 2457 years of follow- up, respectively ( hazard ratio [ HR]: 0.71; 95% CI: 0.59 to 0.85; P < 0.0001). Composite end point of cardiovascular hospitalization or cardiovascular mortality occurred in 33% of placebo-treated patients ( 3029/ 10 000 person- years) and 28% of eplerenone- treated patients (2438/10 000 person- years) with Hx- HTN ( HR: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.72 to 0.94; P = 0.003). In patients without Hx- HTN, eplerenone reduced heart failure hospitalization ( HR: 73; 95% CI: 0.55 to 0.97; P = 0.028) but had no effect on mortality ( HR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.72 to 1.15; P = 0.435) or on the composite end point ( HR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.76 to 1.10; P = 0.331). Eplerenone should, therefore, be prescribed to all of the post - acute myocardial infarction patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction and heart failure regardless of Hx- HTN.

DD K is an antimicrobial peptide previously isolated from the skin of the amphibian Phyllomedusa distincta. The effect of cholesterol on synthetic DD K binding to egg lecithin liposomes was investigated by intrinsic fluorescence of tryptophan residue, measurements of kinetics of 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (CF) leakage, dynamic light scattering and isothermal titration microcalorimetry. An 8 nm blue shift of tryptophan maximum emission fluorescence was observed when DD K was in the presence of lecithin liposomes compared to the value observed for liposomes containing 43 mol% cholesterol. The rate and the extent of CF release were also significantly reduced by the presence of cholesterol. Dynamic light scattering showed that lecithin liposome size increase from 115 to 140 nm when titrated with DD K but addition of cholesterol reduces the liposome size increments. Isothermal titration microcalorimetry studies showed that DD K binding both to liposomes containing cholesterol as to liposomes devoid of it is more entropically than enthalpically favored. Nevertheless, the peptide concentration necessary to furnish an adjustable titration curve is much higher for liposomes containing cholesterol at 43 mol% (2 mmol L-1) than in its absence (93 mu mol L-1). Apparent binding constant values were 2160 and 10,000 L mol(-1), respectively. The whole data indicate that DD K binding to phosphatidylcholine liposomes is significantly affected by cholesterol, which contributes to explain the low hemolytic activity of the peptide. Four species of marine benthic algae (Laurencia filiformis, L. intricata, Gracilaria domingensis and G. birdiae) that belong to the phylum Rhodophyta were collected in Espirito Santo State, Brazil and investigated concerning their biochemical composition (fatty acid, total lipid, soluble proteins, amino acid and ash). The total content of lipid (% dry weight) ranged from 1.1% to 6.2%: fatty acid from 0.7% to 1.0%: soluble protein from 4.6% to 18.3%, amino acid from 6.7% to 11.3% and ash from 22.5% to 38.4%. judging from their composition, the four species of algae appear to be potential sources of dietary proteins, amino acids, lipids and essential fatty acids for humans and animals. A novel approach was developed for nitrate analysis in a FIA configuration with amperometric detection (E=-0.48 V). Sensitive and reproducible current measurements were achieved by using a copper electrode activated with a controlled potential protocol. The response of the FIA amperometric method was linear over the range from 0.1 to 2.5 mmol L(-1) nitrate with a detection limit of 4.2 mu mol L(-1) (S/N = 3). The repeatability of measurements was determined as 4.7% (n=9) at the best conditions (flow rate: 3.0 mL min(-1), sample volume: 150 mu L and nitrate concentration: 0.5 mmol L(-1)) with a sampling rate of 60 samples h(-1). The method was employed for the determination of nitrate in mineral water and soft drink samples and the results were in agreement with those obtained by using a recommended procedure. Studies towards a selective monitoring of nitrite were also performed in samples containing nitrate by carrying out measurements at a less negative potential (-0.20 V). (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Multiconfigurational SCF and second-order perturbation theory have been employed to study seven low-lying singlet and triplet electronic states of the Mo-2 molecule. The bond order of the ground state has been analyzed based on the effective bond order (EBO), indicating that a fully developed sextuple bond is formed between the two Mo atoms. The experimentally observed excited states a(3)Sigma(+)(u) and A(1)Sigma(+)(u) have been determined and the so-called (3)Lambda excited state identified as the b(3)Sigma(+)(u) state, in agreement with experimental expectations. The structure of chemically prepared poly-p-phenylenediamine (PpPD) was investigated by Resonance Raman (RR), FTIR, UV-VIS-NIR, X-ray photoelectron (XPS), X-ray Absorption at Nitrogen K edge (N K XANES), and Electron paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopies. XPS, EPR and N K XANES data reveal that polymeric structure is formed mainly by radical cations and dication nitrogens. It excludes the possibility that PpPD chains have azo or phenazinic nitrogens, as commonly is supposed in the literature. The RR spectrum of PpPD shows two characteristic bands at 1527 cm(-1) and 1590 cm(-1) that were assigned to nu C=N and nu C=C of dication units, respectively, similar to polyaniline in pernigraniline base form. The presence of radical cations was confirmed by Raman data owing to the presence of bands at 1325/1370 cm(-1), characteristic of nu C-N of polaronic segments. Thus, all results indicate that PpPD has a doped PANT-like structure, with semi-quinoid and quinoid rings, and has no phenazinic rings, as observed for poly-o-phenylenediamine. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. Pt monolayers deposited on carbon- supported Ru and Rh nanoparticles were investigated as electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation. Electronic features of the Pt monolayers were studied by in situ XANES (X-ray absorption near-edge structure). The electrochemical activity was investigated by cyclic voltammetry and cronoamperometric experiments. Spectroscopic and electrochemical results were compared to those obtained on carbon-supported Pt-Ru and Pt-Rh alloys, and Pt E-TEK. XAS results indicate a modification of the Pt 5d band due to geometric and electronic interactions with the Ru ant Rh substrates, but the effect of withdrawing electrons from Pt is less pronounced in relation to that for the corresponding alloys. Electrochemical stripping of adsorbed CO, which is one of the intermediates, and the currents for the oxidation of ethanol show faster kinetics on the Pt monolayer deposited on Ru nanoparticles, and an activity that exceeds that of conventional catalysts with much larger amounts of platinum. The aim of this study was to identify a candidate drug for the development of anti-tuberculosis therapy from previously synthesized compounds based on the thiosemicarbazones, semicarbazones, dithio-carbazates and hydrazide/hydrazones compounds. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of these compounds against Mycobacterium tuberculosis was determined. Their in vitro cytotoxicity to J774 cells (IC(50)) was determined to establish a selectivity index (SI) (SI = IC(50)/MIC). The best compounds were the thiosemicarbazones (2, 3 and 4) and the hydrazide/hydrazones (14, 15, 16 and 18). The results are comparable to or better than those of ""first line"" or ""second line"" drugs commonly used to treat TB, suggesting these compounds as anti-TB drug candidates. The possibility to compress analyte bands at the beginning of CE runs has many advantages. Analytes at low concentration can be analyzed with high signal-to-noise ratios by using the so-called sample stacking methods. Moreover, sample injections with very narrow initial band widths (small initial standard deviations) are sometimes useful, especially if high resolutions among the bands are required in the shortest run time. In the present work, a method of sample stacking is proposed and demonstrated. It is based on BGEs with high thermal sensitive pHs (high dpH/dT) and analytes with low dpK(a)/dT. High thermal sensitivity means that the working pK(a) of the BGE has a high dpK(a)/dT in modulus. For instance, Tris and Ethanolamine have dpH/dT = -0.028/degrees C and -0.029/degrees C, respectively, whereas carboxylic acids have low dpK(a)/dT values, i.e. in the -0.002/degrees C to+0.002/degrees C range. The action of cooling and heating sections along the capillary during the runs affects also the local viscosity, conductivity, and electric field strength. The effect of these variables on electrophoretic velocity and band compression is theoretically calculated using a simple model. Finally, this stacking method was demonstrated for amino acids derivatized with naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde and fluorescamine using a temperature difference of 70 degrees C between two neighbor sections and Tris as separation buffer. In this case, the BGE has a high pH thermal coefficient whereas the carboxylic groups of the analytes have low pK(a) thermal coefficients. The application of these dynamic thermal gradients increased peak height by a factor of two (and decreased the standard deviations of peaks by a factor of two) of aspartic acid and glutamic acid derivatized with naphthalene-2,3-dicarboxaldehyde and serine derivatized with fluorescamine. The effect of thermal compression of bands was not observed when runs were accomplished using phosphate buffer at pH 7 (negative control). Phosphate has a low dpH/dT in this pH range, similar to the dK(a)/dT of analytes. It is shown that vertical bar dK(a)/dT-dpH/dT vertical bar >> 0 is one determinant factor to have significant stacking produced by dynamic thermal junctions.
