The perpendicular exchange bias and magnetic anisotropy were investigated in IrMn/Pt/[Co/Pt](3) multilayers through the analysis of in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization hysteresis loops. A phenomenological model was used to simulate the in-plane curves and the effective perpendicular anisotropies were obtained employing the area method. The canted state anisotropy was introduced by taking into account the first and second uniaxial anisotropy terms of the ferromagnet with the corresponding uniaxial anisotropy direction allowed to make a nonzero angle with the film`s normal. This angle, obtained from the fittings, was of approximately 15 degrees for IrMn/[Co/Pt](3) film and decreases with the introduction of Pt in the IrMn/Pt/[Co/Pt](3) system, indicating that the Pt interlayer leads to a predominant perpendicular anisotropy. A maximum of the out-of-plane anisotropy was found between 0.5 and 0.6 nm of Pt, whereas a maximum of the perpendicular exchange bias was found at 0.3 nm. These results are very similar to those obtained for IrMn/Cu/[Co/Pt](3) system; however, the decrease of the exchange bias with the spacer thickness is more abrupt and the enhacement of the perpendicular anisotropy is higher for the case of Cu spacer as compared with that of Pt spacer. The existence of a maximum in the perpendicular exchange bias as a function of the Pt layer thickness was attributed to the predominance of the enhancement of exchange bias due to more perpendicular Co moment orientation over the exponential decrease of the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and, consequently, of the exchange-bias field. In this paper the synthesis, photo luminescence and electroluminescence investigation of the novel tetrakis beta-diketonate of rare-earth complexes such as M[Eu(dbM)(4)] and M[Tb(acac)(4)] with a variety of cationic ligands, M=Li(+), Na(+) and K(+) have been investigated. The emission spectra of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) complexes displayed characteristic narrow bands arising from intraconfigurational transitions of trivalent rare-earth ions and exhibited red color emission for the Eu(3+) ion ((5)D(0) -> F(J), J=0-6) and green for the Tb(3+) ion ((5)D(4) -> (7)F(J), J = 6-0). The lack of the broaden emission bands arising from the ligands suggests the efficient intramolecular energy transfer from the dbm and acac ligands to Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions, respectively. In accordance to the expected, the values of PL quantum efficiency (eta) of the emitting (5)D(0) state of the tetrakis(beta-diketonate) complexes of Eu(3+) were higher compared with those tris-complexes. Therefore, organic electroluminescent (EL) devices were fabricated with the structure as follows: indium tin oxide (ITO)/hole transport layer (HTL) NPB or MTCD/emitter layer M[RE(beta-diketonate)(4)] complexes)/Aluminum (Al). All the films were deposited by thermal evaporation carried out in a high vacuum environment system. The OLED light emission was independent of driving voltage, indicating that the combination of charge carriers generates excitons within the M[RE(beta-diketonate)(4)] layers, and the energy is efficiently transferred to RE(3+) ion. As a best result, a pure red and green electroluminescent emission was observed from the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) devices, confirmed by (X,Y) color coordinates. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nanostrucured europium oxide and hydroxide films were obtained by pulsed Nd:YAG (532 nm) laser ablation of a europium metallic target, in the presence of a 1 mbar helium buffer atmosphere. Both the produced film and the ambient plasma were characterized. The plasma was monitored by an electrostatic probe, for plume expansion in vacuum or in the presence of the buffer atmosphere. The time evolution of the ion saturation current was obtained for several probe to substrate distances. The results show the splitting of the plume into two velocity groups, being the lower velocity profile associated with metal cluster formation within the plume. The films were obtained in the presence of helium atmosphere, for several target-to-substrate distances. They were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, x-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy, for as-deposited and 600 degrees C treated-in-air samples. The results show that the as-deposited samples are amorphous and have chemical composition compatible with europium hydroxide. The thermally treated samples show x-ray diffraction peaks of Eu(2)O(3), with chemical composition showing excess oxygen. Film nanostructuring was shown to be strongly correlated with cluster formation, as shown by velocity splitting in probe current versus time plots. (C) 2010 American Vacuum Society. Nanocrystalline ZnO thin films prepared by the sol-gel dip-coating technique were characterized by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray reflectivity (XR) and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS). The structures of several thin films subjected to (i) isochronous annealing at 350, 450 and 550 degrees C, and (ii) isothermal annealing at 450 degrees C during different time periods, were characterized. The studied thin films are composed of ZnO nanocrystals as revealed by analysing several GIXD patterns, from which their average sizes were determined. Thin film thickness and roughness were determined from quantitative analyses of AFM images and XR patterns. The analysis of XR patterns also yielded the average density of the studied films. Our GISAXS study indicates that the studied ZnO thin films contain nanopores with an ellipsoidal shape, and flattened along the direction normal to the substrate surface. The thin film annealed at the highest temperature, T = 550 degrees C, exhibits higher density and lower thickness and nanoporosity volume fraction, than those annealed at 350 and 450 degrees C. These results indicate that thermal annealing at the highest temperature (550 degrees C) induces a noticeable compaction effect on the structure of the studied thin films. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Catalytic properties of copper thin films deposited in small channels and cavities were tested using Raman microscopy and mass spectroscopy (MS) techniques, mainly. The catalytic surface conditions were addressed visually and chemically by optical microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The experimental conditions of present work induced copper oxidation; eventually a number of carbon species and graphite remained on the catalytic surface. Quartz crystal microbalance and mass spectroscopy data support both adsorption and catalysis phenomena. MS showed CO2 formation during n-hexane heating process but not to 2-propanol, probably due to redox reactions. XPS of copper surface present in the cavity after catalysis tests detected Cu2O and a range of possible carbon species. The adsorption and catalytic performance of copper films deposited in cavities and microchannels were quite similar. A simple miniaturized device for microanalysis was proposed. We describe the assembly of layer-by-layer films based on the poly(propylene imine) dendrimer (PPID) generation 3 and nickel tetrasulfonated phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) for application as chemically sensitive membranes in sepal alive extended-gate field effect transistor (SEGFET) pH sensors PPID/NiTsPc films wet e adsorbed on quartz, glass. indium tin oxide. or gold (Au)-covered glass substrates Multilayer formation was monitored via UV-vis absorption upon following the increment in the Q-band intensity (615 nm) of NiTsPc The nanostructured membranes were very stable in a pH range of 4-10 and displayed a good sensitivity toward H(+), ca 30 mV/pH for PPID/N(1)TsPc films deposited on Au-covered substrates For films deposited on ITO, the sensitivity was ca 52 4 mV/pH. close to the expected theoretical value for ton-sensitive membranes. The use of chemically stable PPID/NiTsPc films as gate membranes in SEGFETs, as introduced here, may represent an alternative for the fabrication of nanostructured, porous platforms for enzyme immobilization to be used in enzymatic biosensors.

The electrostatic layer-by-layer technique has been exploited as an useful strategy for fabrication of nanostructured thin films, in which specific properties can be controlled at the molecular level. Ferrofluids consist of a colloidal suspension of magnetic grains (with only a few nanometers of diameter) with present interesting physical properties and applications, ranging from telecommunication to drug delivery systems. In this article, we developed a new strategy to manipulate ferrofluids upon their immobilization in nanostructured layered films in conjunction with conventional polyelectrolytes using the layer-by-layer technique. We investigated the morphological, optical, and magnetic properties of the immobilized ferrofluid as a function of number of bilayers presented in the films. Ferrofluid/polyelectrolyte multilayers homogeneously covered the substrates surface, and the magnetic and optical properties of films exhibited a linear dependence on the number of bilayers adsorbed.

Thin films of MnO(2) nanoparticles were grown using the layer-by-layer method with poly (diallyldimetylammonium) as the intercalated layer. The film growth was followed by UV-vis, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), and atomic force microscopy. Linear growth due to electrostatic immobilization of layers was observed up to 30 bilayers, but electrical connectivity was maintained only for 12 MnO(2)/PPDA bilayers. The electrochemical characterization of this film in 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-imidazolium (BMMI) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) (BMMITFSI) with and without addition of a lithium salt indicated a higher electrochemical response of the nanostructured electrode in the lithium-containing electrolyte. On the basis of EQCM experiments, it was possible to confirm that the charge compensation process is achieved mainly by the TFSI anion at short times (<2 s) and by BMMI and lithium cations at longer times. The fact that large ions like TFSI and BMMI participate in the electroneutrality is attributed to the redox reaction that occurs at the superficial sites and to the high concentration of these species compared to that of lithium cations.

TiO2 thin films, employed in dye-sensitized solar cells, were prepared by the sol-gel method or directly by Degussa P25 oxide and their surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of adsorption of the cis-[Ru(dcbH(2))(2)(NCS)(2)] dye, N3, on the surface of films was investigated. From XPS spectra taken before and after argon-ion sputtering procedure, the surface composition of inner and outer layers of sensitized films was obtained and a preferential etching of Ru peak in relation to the Ti and N ones was identified. The photoelectrochemical parameters were also evaluated and rationalized in terms of the morphological characteristics of the films. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
