Background: Eccentric exercises (EEs) are recommended for the treatment of Achilles tendinopathy, but the clinical effect from EE has a slow onset. Hypothesis: The addition of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to EE may cause more rapid clinical improvement. Study Design: Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. Methods: A total of 52 recreational athletes with chronic Achilles tendinopathy symptoms were randomized to groups receiving either EE + LLLT or EE + placebo LLLT over 8 weeks in a blinded manner. Low-level laser therapy (lambda = 820 nm) was administered in 12 sessions by irradiating 6 points along the Achilles tendon with a power density of 60 mW/cm(2) and a total dose of 5.4 J per session. Results: The results of the intention-to-treat analysis for the primary outcome, pain intensity during physical activity on the 100-mm visual analog scale, were significantly lower in the LLLT group than in the placebo LLLT group, with 53.6 mm versus 71.5 mm (P = .0003) at 4 weeks, 37.3 mm versus 62.8 mm (P = .0002) at 8 weeks, and 33.0 mm versus 53.0 mm (P =.007) at 12 weeks after randomization. Secondary outcomes of morning stiffness, active dorsiflexion, palpation tenderness, and crepitation showed the same pattern in favor of the LLLT group. Conclusion: Low-level laser therapy, with the parameters used in this study, accelerates clinical recovery from chronic Achilles tendinopathy when added to an EE regimen. For the LLLT group, the results at 4 weeks were similar to the placebo LLLT group results after 12 weeks.

Direct measurements in the last decades have highlighted a new problem related to the lowering of the Coulomb barrier between the interacting nuclei due to the presence of the ""electron screening"" in the laboratory measurements. It was systematically observed that the presence of the electronic cloud around the interacting ions in measurements of nuclear reactions cross sections at astrophysical energies gives rise to an enhancement of the astrophysical S(E)-factor as lower and lower energies are explored [1]. Moreover, at present Such an effect is not well understood as the value of the potential for screening extracted from these measurements is higher than the tipper limit of theoretical predictions (adiabatic limit). On the other hand, the electron screening potential in laboratory measurement is different from that occurring in stellar plasmas thus the quantity of interest in astrophysics is the so-called ""bare nucleus cross section"". This quantity can only be extrapolated in direct measurements. These are the reasons that led to a considerable growth on interest in indirect measurement techniques and in particular the Trojan Horse Method (THM) [2,3]. Results concerning the bare nucleus cross sections measurements will be shown in several cases of astrophysical interest. In those cases the screening potential evaluated by means of the THM will be compared with the adiabatic limit and results arising from extrapolation in direct measurements.

Nanostructural beta-nickel hydroxide (beta-Ni(OH)(2)) plates were prepared using the microwave hydrothermal (MH) method at a low temperature and short reaction times. An ammonia solution was employed as the coordinating agent, which reacts with [Ni(H(2)O)(6)](2+) to control the growth of beta-Ni(OH)(2) nuclei. A trigonal beta-Ni(OH)(2) single phase was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, and the crystal cell was constructed with structural parameters and atomic coordinates obtained from Rietveld refinement. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) images revealed that the samples consisted of hexagonal-shaped nanoplates with a different particle size distribution. Broad absorption bands assigned as transitions of Ni(2+) in oxygen octahedral sites were revealed by UV-vis spectra. Photoluminescence (PL) properties observed with a maximum peak centered in the blue-green region were attributed to different defects, which were produced during the nucleation process. We present a growth process scheme of the beta-Ni(OH)(2) nanoplates. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Diacetyl, like other alpha-dicarbonyl compounds, is reportedly cytotoxic and genotoxic. A food and cigarette contaminant, it is related with alcohol hepatotoxicity and lung disease. Peroxynitrite is a potent oxidant formed in vivo by the diffusion-controlled reaction of the superoxide radical anion with nitric oxide, which is able to form adducts with carbon dioxide and carbonyl compounds. Here, we investigate the nucleophilic addition of peroxynitrite to diacetyl forming acetyl radicals, whose reaction with molecular oxygen leads to acetate. Peroxynitrite is shown to react with diacetyl in phosphate buffer (bell-shaped pH profile with maximum at 7.2) at a very high rate constant (k(2) = 1.0 X 10(4) M-1 s(-1)) when compared with monocarbonyl substrates (k(2) < 10(3) M-1 s(-1)). Phosphate ions (100-500 MM) do not affect the rate of spontaneous peroxynitrite decay, but the H2PO4- anion catalyzes the nucleophilic addition of the peroxynitrite anion to diacetyl. The intermediacy of acetyl radicals is suggested by a three-line spectrum (a(N) = a(H) = 0.83 mT) obtained by EPR spin trapping of the reaction mixture with 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane. The peroxynitrite reaction is accompanied by concentration-dependent oxygen uptake. Stoichiometric amounts of acetate from millimolar amounts of peroxynitrite and diacetyl were obtained under nonlimiting conditions of dissolved oxygen. In the presence of either L-histidine or 2`-deoxyguanosine, the peroxynitrite/diacetyl system afforded the corresponding acetylated molecules identified by HPLC-MS"". These studies provide evidence that the peroxynitrite/diacetyl reaction yields acetyl radicals and raise the hypothesis that protein and DNA nonenzymatic acetylation may occur in cells and be implicated in aging and metabolic disorders in which oxygen and nitrogen reactive species are putatively involved.

A sensitive and robust analytical method for spectrophotometric determination of ethyl xanthate, CH(3)CH(2)OCS(2)(-) at trace concentrations in pulp solutions from froth flotation process is proposed. The analytical method is based on the decomposition of ethyl xanthate. EtX(-), with 2.0 mol L(-1) HCl generating ethanol and carbon disulfide. CS(2). A gas diffusion cell assures that only the volatile compounds diffuse through a PTFE membrane towards an acceptor stream of deionized water, thus avoiding the interferences of non-volatile compounds and suspended particles. The CS(2) is selectively detected by UV absorbance at 206 nm (epsilon = 65,000 L mol(-1) cm(-1)). The measured absorbance is directly proportional to EtX(-) concentration present in the sample solutions. The Beer`s law is obeyed in a 1 x 10(-6) to 2 x 10(-4) mol L(-1) concentration range of ethyl xanthate in the pulp with an excellent correlation coefficient (r = 0.999) and a detection limit of 3.1 x 10(-7) mol L(-1), corresponding to 38 mu g L. At flow rates of 200 mu L min(-1) of the donor stream and 100 mu L min(-1) of the acceptor channel a sampling rate of 15 injections per hour could be achieved with RSD < 2.3% (n = 10, 300 mu L injections of 1 x 10(-5) mol L(-1) EtX(-)). Two practical applications demonstrate the versatility of the FIA method: (i) evaluation the free EtX(-) concentration during a laboratory study of the EtX(-) adsorption capacity on pulverized sulfide ore (pyrite) and (ii) monitoring of EtX(-) at different stages (from starting load to washing effluents) of a flotation pilot plant processing a Cu-Zn sulfide ore. Thin films of MnO(2) nanoparticles were grown using the layer-by-layer method with poly (diallyldimetylammonium) as the intercalated layer. The film growth was followed by UV-vis, electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), and atomic force microscopy. Linear growth due to electrostatic immobilization of layers was observed up to 30 bilayers, but electrical connectivity was maintained only for 12 MnO(2)/PPDA bilayers. The electrochemical characterization of this film in 1-butyl-2,3-dimethyl-imidazolium (BMMI) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) (BMMITFSI) with and without addition of a lithium salt indicated a higher electrochemical response of the nanostructured electrode in the lithium-containing electrolyte. On the basis of EQCM experiments, it was possible to confirm that the charge compensation process is achieved mainly by the TFSI anion at short times (<2 s) and by BMMI and lithium cations at longer times. The fact that large ions like TFSI and BMMI participate in the electroneutrality is attributed to the redox reaction that occurs at the superficial sites and to the high concentration of these species compared to that of lithium cations.

The performance of a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with SBA-15 nanostructured silica organofunctionalised with 2-benzothiazolethiol in the simultaneous determination of Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) ions in natural water and sugar cane spirit (cachaca) is described. Pb(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) were pre-concentrated on the surface of the modified electrode by complexing with 2-benzothiazolethiol and reduced at a negative potential (-0.80 V). Then the reduced products were oxidised by DPASV procedure. The fact that three stripping peaks appeared on the voltammograms at the potentials of -0.48 V (Pb2+), -0.03 V (Cu2+) and +0.36 V (Hg2+) in relation to the SCE, demonstrates the possibility of simultaneous determination of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+. The best results were obtained under the following optimised conditions: 100 mV pulse amplitude, 3 min accumulation time, 25 mV s(-1) scan rate in phosphate solution pH 3.0. Using such parameters, calibration graphs were linear in the concentration ranges of 3.00-70.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1 (Pb2+), 8.00-100.0 X 10(-7) mol L-1 (Cu2+) and 2.00-10.0 x 10(-6) mol L-1 (Hg2+). Detection limits of 4.0 x 10(-8) mol L-1 (Pb2+), 2.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1 (Cu2+) and 4.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1 (Hg2+) were obtained at the signal noise ratio (SNR) of 3. The results indicate that this electrode is sensitive and effective for simultaneous determination of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ in the analysed samples. (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The aim of this study was to develop a fast capillary electrophoresis method for the determination of propranolol in pharmaceutical preparations. In the method development the pH and constituents of the background electrolyte were selected using the effective mobility versus pH curves. Benzylamine was used as the internal standard. The background electrolyte was composed of 60 mmol L(-1) tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and 30 mmol L(-1) 2-hydroxyisobutyric acid,at pH 8.1. Separation was conducted in a fused-silica capillary (32 cm total length and 8.5 cm effective length, 50 mu m I.D.) with a short-end injection configuration and direct UV detection at 214 nm. The run time was only 14 s. Three different strategies were studied in order to develop a fast CE method with low total analysis time for propranolol analysis: low flush time (Lflush) 35 runs/h, without flush (Wflush) 52 runs/h, and Invert (switched polarity) 45 runs/h. Since the three strategies developed are statistically equivalent, Mush was selected due to the higher analytical frequency in comparison with the other methods. A few figures of merit of the proposed method include: good linearity (R(2) > 0.9999); limit of detection of 0.5 mg L(-1): inter-day precision better than 1.03% (n = 9) and recovery in the range of 95.1-104.5%. ZrO(2), gamma-Al(2)O(3) and ZrO(2)/gamma-Al(2)O(3)-supported copper catalysts have been prepared, each with three different copper loads (1, 2 and 5 wt%), by the impregnation method. The catalysts were characterized by nitrogen adsorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) with H(2), Raman spectroscopy and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR). The reduction of NO by CO was studied in a fixed-bed reactor packed with these catalysts and fed with a mixture of 1% CO and 1% NO in helium. The catalyst with 5 wt% copper supported on the ZrO(2)/gamma-Al(2)O(3) matrix achieved 80% reduction of NO. Approximately the same rate of conversion was obtained on the catalyst with 2 wt% copper on ZrO(2). Characterization of these catalysts indicated that the active copper species for the reduction of NO are those in direct contact with the oxygen vacancies found in ZrO(2).
