We consider the formal non-relativistic limit (nrl) of the : phi(4):(s+1) relativistic quantum field theory (rqft), where s is the space dimension. Following the work of R. Jackiw [R. Jackiw, in: A. Ali, P. Hood-bhoy (Eds.), Beg Memorial Volume, World Scientific, Singapore, 1991], we show that, for s = 2 and a given value of the ultraviolet cutoff K, there are two ways to perform the nrl: (i) fixing the renormalized mass m(2) equal to the bare mass m(0)(2); (ii) keeping the renormalized mass fixed and different from the bare mass mo. In the (infinite-volume) two-particle sector the scattering amplitude tends to zero as K -> infinity in case (i) and, in case (ii), there is a bound state, indicating that the interaction potential is attractive. As a consequence, stability of matter fails for our boson system. We discuss why both alternatives do not reproduce the low-energy behaviour of the full rqft. The singular nature of the nrl is also nicely illustrated for s = 1 by a rigorous stability/instability result of a different nature. (C) 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Measurements of the magnetic susceptibility of the frustrated pyrochlore magnet Gd(2)Sn(2)O(7) have been performed at temperatures below T = 5 K and in magnetic fields up to H = 12 T. The phase boundaries determined from these measurements are mapped out in an H-T phase diagram. In this gadolinium compound, where the crystal-field splitting is small and the exchange and dipolar energy are comparable, the Zeeman energy overcomes these competing energies, resulting in at least four magnetic phase transitions below 1 K. These data are compared against those for Gd(2)Ti(2)O(7) and will, we hope, stimulate further studies.

Cathepsin V is a lysosomal cysteine peptidase highly expressed in thymus, testis and corneal epithelium. Eleven acridone alkaloids were isolated from Swinglea glutinosa (Bl.) Merr. (Rutaceae), with eight of them being identified as potent and reversible inhibitors of cathepsin V (IC(50) values ranging from 1.2 to 3.9 mu M). Detailed mechanistic characterization of the effects of these compounds on the cathepsin V-catalyzed reaction showed clear competitive inhibition with respect to substrate, with dissociation constants (K(i)) in the low micromolar range (2, K(i) = 1.2 mu M; 6, K(i) = 1.0 mu M; 7, K(i) = 0.2 mu M; and 11, K(i) = 1.7 mu M). Molecular modeling studies provided important insight into the structural basis for binding affinity and enzyme inhibition. Experimental and computational approaches, including biological evaluation, mode of action assessment and modeling studies were successfully employed in the discovery of a small series of acridone alkaloid derivatives as competitive inhibitors of catV. The most potent inhibitor (7) has a K(i) value of 200 nM. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

For a fixed family F of graphs, an F-packing in a graph G is a set of pairwise vertex-disjoint subgraphs of G, each isomorphic to an element of F. Finding an F-packing that maximizes the number of covered edges is a natural generalization of the maximum matching problem, which is just F = {K(2)}. In this paper we provide new approximation algorithms and hardness results for the K(r)-packing problem where K(r) = {K(2), K(3,) . . . , K(r)}. We show that already for r = 3 the K(r)-packing problem is APX-complete, and, in fact, we show that it remains so even for graphs with maximum degree 4. On the positive side, we give an approximation algorithm with approximation ratio at most 2 for every fixed r. For r = 3, 4, 5 we obtain better approximations. For r = 3 we obtain a simple 3/2-approximation, achieving a known ratio that follows from a more involved algorithm of Halldorsson. For r = 4, we obtain a (3/2 + epsilon)-approximation, and for r = 5 we obtain a (25/14 + epsilon)-approximation. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Glycine-rich proteins (GRP), serve a variety of biological functions. Acanthoscurrin is an antimicrobial GRP isolated front hemocytes-of the Brazilian spider Acanthoscurria gomesiana. Aiming to contribute to the knowledge of the secondary structure and stepwise solid-phase synthesis of GRPs` glycine-rich domains, we attempted to prepare G(101)GGLGGGRGGGYG(113) GGGGYGGGYG(123)GGy(126)GGGKYK(132)-NH(2), acanthoscurrin C-terminal amidated fragment. Although a theoretical prediction did not indicate high aggregation potential for this peptide, repetitive incomplete aminoacylations were observed after incorporating Tyr(126) to the growing peptide-MBHA resin (Boc chemistry) at 60 degrees C. The problem was not solved by varying the coupling reagents or solvents, adding chaotropic salts to the reaction media or changing the resin/chemistry (Rink amide resin/Fmoc chemistry). Some improvement was mode when CLEAR amide resin (Fmoc chemistry) was 32 used, as it allowed for obtaining fragment (G(113)-K(132) NIR-FT-Raman spectra collected for samples of the growing peptide-MBHA, -Rink amide resin and -CLEAR amide resin revealed the presence of beta-sheet structures. Only the combination of CLEAR-amide resin, 60 degrees C, Fmoc-(Fmoc-Hmb)Gly-OH and LiCl (the last two used alternately) was able to inhibit the phenomenon, as proven by NIR-FT-Raman analysis of the growing peptide-resin, allowing the total synthesis of desired 132 fragment Gly(101)-K(132). In summary, this work describes a new difficult sequence, contributes to understanding stepwise solid-phase synthesis of this type of peptide and shows that, at least while protected and linked to a resin, this GRPs glycine-rich motif presents all early tendency to assume beta-sheet structures. CD and EPR were used to characterize interactions of oxindole-Schiff base copper(II) complexes with human serum albumin (HSA). These imine ligands form very stable complexes with copper, and can efficiently compete for this metal ion towards the specific N-terminal binding site of the protein, consisting of the amino acid sequence Asp-Ala-His. Relative stability constants for the corresponding complexes were estimated from CD data, using the protein as competitive ligand, with values of log K(CuL) in the range 15.7-18.1, very close to that of [Cu(HSA)] itself, with log K(CuHSA) 16.2. Some of the complexes are also able to interfere in the a-helix structure of the protein, while others seem not to affect it. EPR spectra corroborate those results, indicating at least two different metal species in solution, depending on the imine ligand. Oxidative damage to the protein after incubation with these copper(II) complexes, particularly in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, was monitored by carbonyl groups formation, and was observed to be more severe when conformational features of the protein were modified. Complementary EPR spin-trapping data indicated significant formation of hydroxyl and carbon centered radicals, consistent with an oxidative mechanism. Theoretical calculations at density functional theory (DFT) level were employed to evaluate Cu(II)-L binding energies, L -> Cu(II) donation, and Cu(II) -> L back-donation, by considering the Schiff bases and the N-terminal site of HSA as ligands. These results complement previous studies on cytotoxicity, nuclease and pro-apoptotic properties of this kind of copper(II) complexes, providing additional information about their possibilities of transport and disposition in blood plasma. Vanillin was found to be efficient as a deactivator of ferrylmyoglobin with a second-order rate constant of k(2) = S7 +/- 1 L mol(-1) s(-1) for reduction to metmyoglobin with Delta H(double dagger) = 58.3 +/- 0.3 kJ mol(-1) and Delta S(double dagger) = -14 +/- 1 J mol(-1) K(-1) in aqueous pH 7.4 solution at 25 degrees C. Binding to beta-lactoglobulin (AG) was found to affect the reactivity of vanillin at 25 degrees C only slightly to k(2) = 48 +/- 2 L mol(-1) s(-1) (Delta H(double dagger) = 68.4 +/- 0.4 kJ mol(-1) and Delta S(double dagger) = 17 +/- 1 J mol(-1) K(-1)) for deactivation of ferrylmyoglobin. Binding of vanillin to beta LG was found to have a binding stoichiometry vanillin/beta LG > 10 with K(A) = 6 x 10(2) L mol(-1) and an apparent total Delta H degrees of approximately -38 kJ mol(-1) and Delta S degrees = -S5.4 +/- 4J mol(-1) K(-1) at 25 degrees C and Delta C(p), (obs) = -1.02 kJ mol(-1) K(-1) indicative of increasing ordering in the complex, as determined by isothermal titration microcalorimetry. From tryptophan fluorescence quenching for beta LG by vanillin, approximately one vanillin was found to bind to each beta LG far stronger with K(A) = 5 x 10(4) L, mol(-1) and a Delta H degrees = 10.2 kJ mol(-1) and Delta S degrees = 55J mol(-1) K(-1) at 25 degrees C. The kinetic entropy/enthalpy compensation effect seen for vanillin reactivity by binding to beta LG is concluded to relate to the weakly bound vanillin oriented through hydrogen bonds on the beta LG surface with the phenolic group pointing toward the solvent, in effect making both Delta H(double dagger) and Delta S(double dagger) more positive. The more strongly bound vanillin capable of tryptophan quenching in the fiLG calyx seems less or nonreactive.
