Stokes and anti-Stokes SERRS intensity fluctuations were observed from a roughened silver electrode immersed in diluted solutions of Brilliant Green (BG), a behaviour linked to single-molecule events. The distributions of the anti-Stokes to Stokes ratios were obtained and their shape showed a strong dependence on the applied potential.

The mineralogical characterization through mineral quantification of Brazilian soils by X-ray diffraction data using the Rietveld Method is not common. A mineralogical quantification of an Acric Ferralsol from the Ponta Grossa region, state of Paraná, Brazil, was carried out using this Method with X-Ray Diffraction data to verify if this method was suitable for mineral quantification of a highly-weathered soil. The A, AB and B3 horizons were fractioned to separate the different particle sizes: clay, silt, fine sand (by Stokes Law) and coarse sand fractions (by sieving), with the procedure free of chemical treatments. X-ray Fluorescence, Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry, Infrared Spectroscopy and Mössbauer Spectroscopy were used in order to assist the mineral identification and quantification. The Rietveld Method enabled the quantification of the present minerals. In a general way, the quantitative mineralogical characterization by the Rietveld Method revealed that quartz, gibbsite, rutile, hematite, goethite, kaolinite and halloysite were present in the clay and silt fractions of all horizons. The silt fractions of the deeper horizons were different from the more superficial ones due to the presence of large amounts of quartz. The fine and the coarse sand fractions are constituted mainly by quartz. Therefore, a mineralogical quantification of the finer fraction (clay and silt) by the Rietveld Method was successful.

Estuarine hydrodynamics is a key factor in the definition of the filtering capacity of an estuary and results from the interaction of the processes that control the inlet morphodynamics and those that are acting in the mixing of the water in the estuary. The hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport in the Camboriú estuary were assessed by two field campaigns conducted in 1998 that covered both neap and spring tide conditions. The period measured represents the estuarine hydrodynamics and sediment transport prior to the construction of the jetty in 2003 and provides important background information for the Camboriú estuary. Each field campaign covered two complete tidal cycles with hourly measurements of currents, salinity, suspended sediment concentration and water level. Results show that the Camboriú estuary is partially mixed with the vertical structure varying as a function of the tidal range and tidal phase. The dynamic estuarine structure can be balanced between the stabilizing effects generated by the vertical density gradient, which produces buoyancy and stratification flows, and the turbulent effects generated by the vertical velocity gradient that generates vertical mixing. The main sediment source for the water column are the bottom sediments, periodically resuspended by the tidal currents. The advective salt and suspended sediment transport was different between neap and spring tides, being more complex at spring tide. The river discharge term was important under both tidal conditions. The tidal correlation term was also important, being dominant in the suspended sediment transport during the spring tide. The gravitational circulation and Stokes drift played a secondary role in the estuarine transport processes.

The conversion of red excitation light into blue emission light (uphill energy conversion) using unstable 1,2-dioxetanes is described. The method is based on 1,2-dioxetane formation by red-light sensitized photooxygenation of adequate alkenes and subsequent blue-light emission due to thermal 1,2-dioxetane cleavage. The energy gain resulting from the chemical energy obtained in the transformation of an alkene into two carbonyl compounds transforms a red-light excitation laser beam into a blue-light chemiluminescence emission, producing thereby a formal anti-Stokes shift of 200-250 nm, opening up a whole spectrum of possible applications.

In this paper we analyze the behavior of the Laplace operator with Neumann boundary conditions in a thin domain of the type R(epsilon) = {(x(1), x(2)) is an element of R(2) vertical bar x(1) is an element of (0, 1), 0 < x(2) < epsilon G(x(1), x(1)/epsilon)} where the function G(x, y) is periodic in y of period L. Observe that the upper boundary of the thin domain presents a highly oscillatory behavior and, moreover, the height of the thin domain, the amplitude and period of the oscillations are all of the same order, given by the small parameter epsilon. The measurement of the charge distribution in laboratory generated aerosols particles was carried out. Four cases of electrostatic charge acquisition by aerosol particles were evaluated. In two of these cases. the charges acquired by the particles were naturally derived from the aerosol generation procedure itself, without using any additional charging method. Ill the other two cases, a corona charger and an impact charger were utilized as Supplementary methods for charge generation. Two types of aerosol generators were used in the dispersion of particles in the gas Stream: the vibrating orifice generator TSI model 3450 and the rotating plate generator TSI model 3433. In the vibrating orifice generator. a Solution of methylene blue Was used and the generated particles were mono-dispersed. Different mono-aerosols were generated with particle diameters varying from 6.0 x 10(-6) m to 1.4 x 10(-5) m. In the rotating plate generator, a poly-dispersed phosphate rock concentrate with Stokes mean diameter of 1.30 x 10(-6) m and size range between 1.5 x 10(-7) m and 8.0 x 10(-6) m Was utilized as powder material in all tests. In the tests performed with the mono-dispersed particles. the median charges of the particles varied between -3.0 x 10-(16) C and -5.0 x 10(-18) degrees C and a weak dependence between particle size and charge was observed. The particles were predominantly negatively charged. In the tests with the poly-dispersed particles the median charges varied fairly linearly with the particle diameter and were negative. The order of magnitude of the results obtained is in accordance with data reported in the literature. The charge distribution, in this case, was wider, so that an appreciable amount of particles were positively charged. The relative spread of the distribution varied with the charging method. It was also noticed that the corona charger acted very effectively in charging the particles. (C) 2008 Elsevier BY. All rights reserved.

A series of new phenyl-based conjugated copolymers has been synthesized and investigated by vibrational and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). The materials are: poly( 1,4-phenylene-alt-3,6-pyridazine) (COP-PIR), poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene)-co-quaterphenylene (COP-PPP) and poly[(1,4-phenylene-alt-3,6-pyridazine)-co-(1,4-phenylene-alt-9,9-dioctylfluorene)] (COP-PIR-FLUOR), with 3.5% of fluorene. COP-PPP and COP-PIR-FLUOR have high fluorescence quantum yields in solution. Infrared and Raman spectra were used to check the chemical structure of the compounds. The copolymers exhibit blue emission ranging front 2.8 to 3.6 eV when excited at E(exc)=4.13 eV. Stokes-shift Values were estimated on pristine samples in their condensed state from steady-state PL-emission and PL-excitation spectra. They suggest a difference in the torsional angle between the molecular configuration of the polymer blocks at the absorption and PL transitions and also in the photoexcitation diffusion. Additionally, the time-resolved PL of these materials has been investigated by using 100 fs laser pulses at E(exc)=4.64 eV and a streak camera. Results show very fast biexponential kinetics for the two fluorene-based polymers with decay times below 300 ps indicating both intramolecular, fast radiative recombination and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. By contrast, the PL of COP-PIR is less intense and longer lived, indicating that excitons are confined to the chains in this polymer. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We investigated three amino derivatives of ortho-aminobenzoic or anthranilic acid (o-Abz): a) 2-Amino-benzamide (AbzNH(2)); b) 2-Amino-N-methyl-benzamide (AbzNHCH(3)) and c) 2-Amino-N-N`-dimethyl-bezamide (AbzNH(CH(3))(2)), see Scheme 1. We describe the results of ab-initio calculations on the structural characteristics of the compounds and experimental studies about solvent effects in their absorption and steady-state and time-resolved emission properties. Ab-initio calculations showed higher stability for the rotameric conformation in which the oxygen of carbonyl is near to the nitrogen of ortho-amino group. The derivatives present decrease in the delocalization of pi electron, and absorption bands are blue shifted compared to the parent compound absorption, the extent of the effect increasing from to Abz-NH(2) to Abz-NHCH(3) Abz-NH(CH(3))(2). Measurements performed in several solvents have shown that the the dependence of Stokes shift of the derivatives with the orientational polarizability follows the Onsager-Lippert model for general effects of solvent. However deviation occurred in solvents with properties of Bronsted acids, or electron acceptor characteristics, so that hydrogen bonds formed with protic solvents predominates over intramolecular hydrogen bond. In most solvents the fluorescence decay of AbzNH(2) and AbzNHCH(3) was fitted to a single exponential with lifetimes around 7.0 ns and no correlation with polarity of the solvent was observed. The fluorescence decay of AbzN(CH(3))(2) showed lifetimes around 2.0 ns, consistent with low quantum yield of the compound. The spectroscopic properties of the monoamino derivative AbzNHCH(3) are representative of the properties presented by Abz labelled peptides and fatty acids previously studied.

Introduction: Among patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) both obstructive and central sleep apnea (SA) are associated with increased sympathetic activity. However, the day-night pattern of cardiac autonomic nervous system modulation in CHF patients with and without sleep apnea is unknown. Material and methods: Twenty-five CHF patients underwent polysomnography with simultaneous beat-to-beat blood pressure (Portapres), respiration and electrocardiogram monitoring. Patients were divided according to the presence (SA, n=17) and absence of SA (NoSA, n=8). Power spectral analyses of heart rate variability (HRV) and spontaneous baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) were determined in periods with stable breathing while awake at 6 AM, 10 AM, 10 PM, as well as during stage 2 sleep. In addition, muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) was evaluated at 10 AM. Results: RR variance, low-frequency (LF), high-frequency (HF) powers of HRV, and BRS were significantly lower in patients with SA compared with NoSA in all periods. HF power, a marker of vagal activity, increased during sleep in patients with NoSA but in contrast did not change across the 24-hour period in patients with SA. MSNA was significantly higher in patients with SA compared with NoSA. RR variance, LF and HF powers correlated inversely with simultaneous MSNA (r=-0.64, -0.61, and -0.61 respectively; P < 0.01). Conclusions: Patients with CHF and SA present a reduced and blunted cardiac autonomic modulation across the 24-hour period. These findings may help to explain the increased cardiovascular risk in patients with CHF and SA. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

The magnetic response of the near-band-edge optical properties is studied in EuTe layers. In several magneto-optical experiments, the absorption and emission are described as well as the related Stokes shift. Specifically, we present the first experimental report of the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectrum in Faraday configuration. The PLE spectra shows to be related with the absorption spectra through the observation of resonance between the excitation light and the zero-field band-gap. A new emission line appears at 1.6 eV at a moderate magnetic field in the photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Furthermore, we examine the absorption and PL red-shift induced by the magnetic field in the light of the d-f exchange interaction energy involved in these processes. Whereas the absorption red-shift shows a quadratic dependence on the field, the PL red-shift shows a linear dependence which is explained by spin relaxation of the excited state.
