Polymeric electroactive blends formed by electropolymerized aniline inside a non-conductive polyacrylamide porous matrix were already shown as suitable materials for the electrocontrolled release of model compounds like safranin. In this paper the intermolecular interactions between the two components of the blend are put in evidence by Raman spectroscopy measurements. Also, in situ optical microscopy was used to follow changes occurring in the polyaniline/polyacrylamide blend during pyrocathecol violet release tests. These two sets of experiments show the possibility of controlling electrochemically the release of both, safranin (a cation) and pyrocathecol violet (an anion) and allow to infer a release mechanism based on the electromechanical properties of the blends explaining the dependence of the release kinetics on the applied potential. Tetracycline release curves for different potentials and pHs are shown and the obtained profiles are in agreement with those expected for a device acting as an electrochemically driven pump due to the artificial muscle properties of the conducting phase of the blends. For the first time, the resonance Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize polymers derived from meta- and para-nitroanilines. In order to improve the polymer structure analysis, other techniques were also used such as FTIR, UV-vis, XRD, XPS, EPR and N K-XANES. The insertion of strong electron-withdrawing groups (NO2) in polyaniline (PANI)-like backbone causes drastic changes in the lower energy charge transfer states, related to the polymer effective conjugation length. The resonance Raman data show that the NO2 moiety has a minor contribution on the CT state in poly(meta-nitroaniline), PMN, while in the poly(para-nitroaniline), PPN, the quinoid structure induced by para-substitution increases the charge density of NO2 groups, causing a more localized chromophore. The characterization of the imine nitrogen and of the protonated segments was done by XPS, N K-XANES and EPR spectroscopies and the lower polymerization degree of PPN, in comparison to PMN, is confirmed by XRD and TG data. The thermal behavior of PANI nanofibers doped with beta-naphthalenesulfonic acid (beta-NSA) was investigated and their morphological and structural changes after heating were monitored by SEM, XRD and Raman techniques, respectively. By using electron-scanning microscopy it is possible to verify that the nanofiber morphology is stable and no polymer degradation is observed in thermogravimetric (TG) data up to 200 degrees C. Nevertheless, the heating promotes the formation of cross-linking structures (phenazine and/or oxazine-like rings), that is clearly demonstrated by the presence of bands at ca. 578, 1398, and 1644 cm(-1) in resonance Raman spectra of heated PANI-NSA samples. The most important consequence of the formation of cross-linking structures in PANI-NSA samples is that these samples retain their nanofiber morphology upon HCl doping in contrast to PANI-NSA nanofibers without heating. The polymerization of the intercalated aniline ions was studied in three different clays, Swy2-montmorillonite (MMT), synthetic mica-montmorillonite (Synl) and pillarized Swy2-montmorillonite (PILC). PANI is formed between the MMT and Syn1 clay layers, being confirmed by the shift of d(001) peak in the X-ray pattern. X-ray Absorption near to Si K edge (Si K XANES) data show that the structures of clays are preserved after the polymerization process and in addition to the SEM images show that morphologies of the clays are maintained after polymerization, indicating no polymerization in their external surface. UV-vis-NIR and resonance Raman data display that the PANI formed in Syn1 galleries has higher amount of phenazinic rings than observed for PANI intercalated in montmorillonite (MMT) clay. No polymer formation was detected in the PILC. N K XANES and EPR spectroscopies show the presence of azo and radical nitrogen in intercalated PAN! chains. Hence, the results are rationalized considering the structural differences between the clays for understanding the role of the anilinium polymerization within the clays galleries. In the present work. the resonance Raman. UV-vis-NIR and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) data of nanorods (about similar to 300 rim in diameter) and nanofibers (about similar to 93 nm in diameter) of PANI are presented and compared. The PANI samples were synthesized in aqueous media with dodecybenzenesulfonic acid (DBSA) and beta-naphtalenesulfonic acid (beta-NSA) as dopants, respectively. The presence of hands at 578, 1400 and 1632cm(-1) in the Raman spectra of PANI-NSA and PANI-DBSA shows that the formation of cross-linking structures is a general feature of the PANI chains prepared in micellar media. It is proposed that these structures are responsible for the one-dimensional PANI morphology formation. In addition, the Raman band at 609cm(-1) of PANI fibers is correlated with the extended PANI chain coil formation. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A simple and efficient procedure for the synthesis of beta-seleno and beta-thio amides via the ring-opening reaction of chiral 2-oxazolines in the presence of indium metal has been developed. Features of this method include the following: (i) easily and accessible starting materials; (ii) indium metal is more stable and less expensive then its respective salts; (iii) useful to excellent yields of beta-chalcogen amides derivatives. A new class of chiral beta-amino disulfides was synthesized from readily available and inexpensive starting materials by a straightforward method and their abilities as ligands were examined in the enantioselective addition of diethylzinc to aldehydes. Enantiomeric excesses of up to 99% have been obtained using 0.5 mol % of the chiral catalysts.

This work presents a cyclic voltammetry study of the polyaniline/polyluminol copolymer on platinum electrodes. The results show that under determined conditions it is possible to obtain the copolymer deposited on a metallic surface. The luminol presence clearly affects the oxidation of aniline in the nucleation process and, additionally, changes the cyclic voltammetric characteristics of the obtained material. In this aspect, the copolymer presents hybrid characteristics when compared to the polyaniline and polyluminol separately obtained and seems to present intermediary conductivity.

The concern related to the environmental degradation and to the exhaustion of natural resources has induced the research on biodegradable materials obtained from renewable sources, which involves fundamental properties and general application. In this context, we have fabricated thin films of lignins, which were extracted from sugar cane bagasse via modified organosolv process using ethanol as organic solvent. The films were made using the vacuum thermal evaporation technique (PVD, physical vapor deposition) grown up to 120 nm. The main objective was to explore basic properties such as electrical and surface morphology and the sensing performance of these lignins as transducers. The PVD film growth was monitored via ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance, revealing a linear relationship between absorbance and film thickness. The 120 nm lignin PVD film morphology presented small aggregates spread all over the film surface on the nanometer scale (atomic force microscopy, AFM) and homogeneous on the micrometer scale (optical microscopy). The PVD films were deposited onto Au interdigitated electrode (IDE) for both electrical characterization and sensing experiments. In the case of electrical characterization, current versus voltage (I vs V) dc measurements were carried out for the Au IDE coated with 120 nm lignin PVD film, leading to a conductivity of 3.6 x 10(-10) S/m. Using impedance spectroscopy, also for the Au IDE coated with the 120 nm lignin PVD film, dielectric constant of 8.0, tan delta of 3.9 x 10(-3)) and conductivity of 1.75 x 10(-9) S/m were calculated at 1 kHz. As a proof-of-principle, the application of these lignins as transducers in sensing devices was monitored by both impedance spectroscopy (capacitance vs frequency) and I versus time dc measurements toward aniline vapor (saturated atmosphere). The electrical responses showed that the sensing units are sensible to aniline vapor with the process being reversible. AFM images conducted directly onto the sensing units (Au IDE coated with 120 nm lignin PVD film) before and after the sensing experiments showed a decrease in the PVD film roughness from 5.8 to 3.2 nm after exposing to aniline.

An investigation of the parameters as aniline: MnO(2) and temperature on synthesis of polyaniline/MnO(2) composites was performed. The composites were chemically prepared in H(2)SO(4) media using different aniline: MnO(2) ratios at 0 degrees C. After the ratio optimization, the syntheses were performed at 20 degrees C. The polyaniline/MnO(2) composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible, near infrared and infrared spectroscopic techniques. Composites obtained with a uniform, homogeneous and thicker coating of polyaniline films under oxide was considered as the best condition for synthesis.
Antifungal activity of tri- and tetra-thioureido amino derivatives against different Candida species
Resumo:
The in vitro antifungal activity of six thioureido substituted amines (P1-P6) was evaluated against Candida species, including Candida albicans, C. glabrata, C. krusei and C. parapsilosis. These tri- and tetra-thioureido amino derivatives with different methylation levels were synthesised through easy synthetic routes to evaluate their antifungal properties against Candida species. Among all studied derivatives, the tri-(2-thioureido-ethyl)-amine (P1) was the most active compound inhibiting C. albicans and C. glabrata at a concentration of 0.49 mu g ml(-1); P3, the N,N `,N ``,N ```-hexamethyl-derivative, also showed inhibitory activity against C. albicans and C. glabrata, but in higher concentrations (250 mu g ml(-1)). The N,N `,N ``,N ```-tetramethylated amine (P5) only inhibited the growth of C. glabrata, but its corresponding N,N `,N ``,N ```-octamethyl derivative (P6) was also active against C. glabrata (125 mu g ml(-1)) and it was the only compound active against C. parapsilosis. P2 and P4 showed no significant antifungal activity. The structure-activity relationship of the thioureido-substituted derivatives indicates that the molecular branching and the alkylation levels can influence the antifungal activity. This study demonstrated that thioureido derivatives exhibited significant antifungal activity against Candida species and that they can be considered as a very promising bioactive lead compound to develop novel antifungal agents.
