Purpose: Contact lens electrodes (CLEs) are frequently used to register electroretinograms (ERGs) in small animals such as mice or rats. CLEs are expensive to buy or difficult to be produced individually. In addition, CLE`s have been noticed to elicit inconstant results and they carry potential to injure the cornea. Therefore, a new electrode holder was constructed based on the clinically used DTL-electrode and compared to CLEs. Material and methods: ERGs were recorded with both electrode types in nine healthy Brown-Norway rats under scotopic conditions. For low intensity responses a Naka-Rushton function was fitted and the parameters V(max), k and n were analyzed. The a-wave, b-wave and oscillatory potentials were analyzed for brighter flash intensities (1-60 scot cd s/m(2)). Repeatability was assessed for both electrode types in consecutive measurements. Results: The new electrode holder was faster in setting up than the CLE and showed lower standard deviations. No corneal alterations were observed. Slightly higher amplitudes were recorded in most of the measurements with the new electrode holder (except amplitudes induced by 60 cd s/m(2)). A Bland-Altman test showed good agreement between the DTL holder and the CLE (mean difference 35.2 mu V (Holder-CLE)). Pearson`s correlation coefficient for test-retest-reliability was r = 0.783. Conclusions: The DTL holder was superior in handling and caused far less corneal problems than the CLE and produced comparable or better electrophysiological results. The minimal production costs and the possibility of adapting the DTL holder to bigger eyes, such as for dogs or rabbits, offers with broader application prospects. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. P>The determination of normal parameters is an important procedure in the evaluation of the stomatognathic system. We used the surface electromyography standardization protocol described by Ferrario et al. (J Oral Rehabil. 2000;27:33-40, 2006;33:341) to determine reference values of the electromyographic standardized indices for the assessment of muscular symmetry (left and right side, percentage overlapping coefficient, POC), potential lateral displacing components (unbalanced contractile activities of contralateral masseter and temporalis muscles, TC), relative activity (most prevalent pair of masticatory muscles, ATTIV) and total activity (integrated areas of the electromyographic potentials over time, IMPACT) in healthy Brazilian young adults, and the relevant data reproducibility. Electromyography of the right and left masseter and temporalis muscles was performed during maximum teeth clenching in 20 healthy subjects (10 women and 10 men, mean age 23 years, s.d. 3), free from periodontal problems, temporomandibular disorders, oro-facial myofunctional disorder, and with full permanent dentition (28 teeth at least). Data reproducibility was computed for 75% of the sample. The values obtained were POC Temporal (88 center dot 11 +/- 1 center dot 45%), POC masseter (87 center dot 11 +/- 1 center dot 60%), TC (8 center dot 79 +/- 1 center dot 20%), ATTIV (-0 center dot 33 +/- 9 center dot 65%) and IMPACT (110 center dot 40 +/- 23 center dot 69 mu V/mu V center dot s %). There were no statistical differences between test and retest values (P > 0 center dot 05). The Technical Errors of Measurement (TEM) for 50% of subjects assessed during the same session were 1 center dot 5, 1 center dot 39, 1 center dot 06, 3 center dot 83 and 10 center dot 04. For 25% of the subjects assessed after a 6-month interval, the TEM were 0 center dot 80, 1 center dot 03, 0 center dot 73, 12 center dot 70 and 19 center dot 10. For all indices, there was good reproducibility. These electromyographic indices could be used in the assessment of patients with stomatognathic dysfunction.

The aim of this paper was to verify whether AC biosusceptometry (ACB) is suitable for monitoring gastrointestinal (GI) contraction directly from smooth muscle in dogs, comparing with electrical recordings simultaneously. All experiments were performed in dogs with magnetic markers implanted under the serosa of the right colon and distal stomach, and their movements were recorded by ACB. Monopolar electrodes were implanted close to the magnetic markers and their electric potentials were recorded by electromyography (EMG). The effects of neostigmine, hyoscine butylbromide and meal on gastric and colonic parameters were studied. The ACB signal from the distal stomach was very similar to EMG; in the colonic recordings, however, within the same low-frequency band, ACB and EMG signals were characterized by simultaneity or a widely changeable frequency profile with time. ACB recordings were capable of demonstrating the changes in gastric and colonic motility determined by pharmacological interventions as well as by feeding. Our results reinforce the importance of evaluating the mechanical and electrical components of motility and show a temporal association between them. ACB and EMG arecomplementary for studying motility, with special emphasis on the colon. ACB offers an accurate method for monitoring in vivo GI motility.

Noxious stimulation of the leg increases hind limb blood flow (HBF) to the ipsilateral side and decreases to the contralateral in rat. Whether or not this asymmetrical response is due to direct control by sympathetic terminals or mediated by other factors such as local metabolism and hormones remains unclear. The aim of this study was to compare responses in lumbar sympathetic nerve activity, evoked by stimulation of the ipsilateral and contralateral sciatic nerve (SN). We also sought to determine the supraspinal mechanisms involved in the observed responses. In anesthetized and paralyzed rats, intermittent electrical stimulation (1 mA, 0.5 Hz) of the contralateral SN evoked a biphasic sympathoexcitation. Following ipsilateral SN stimulation, the response is preceded by an inhibitory potential with a latency of 50 ms (N=26). Both excitatory and inhibitory potentials are abolished following cervical Cl spinal transection (N=6) or bilateral microinjections of muscimol (N=6) in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM). This evidence is suggestive that both sympathetic potentials are supraspinally mediated in this nucleus. Blockade of RVLM glutamate receptors by microinjection of kynurenic acid (N=4) selectively abolished the excitatory potential elicited by ipsilateral SN stimulation. This study supports the physiological model that activation of hind limb nociceptors evokes a generalized sympathoexcitation, with the exception of the ipsilateral side where there is a withdrawal of sympathetic tone resulting in an increase in HBF. There is no consensus on the relevance of factors that influence gender differences in the behavior of muscles. Some studies have reported a relationship between muscle tension and amplitude of the vestibular evoked myogenic potential; others, that results depend on which muscles are studied or on how much load is applied. Aims: This study aims to compare vestibular evoked myogenic potential parameters between genders in young individuals. Methods: Eighty young adults were selected - 40 men and 40 women. Stimuli were averaged tone-bursts at 500 Hz, 90 dBHL intensity, and a 10-1000 Hz bandpass filter with amplification of 10-25 microvolts per division. The recordings were made in 80 ms windows. Study type: An experimental and prospective study. Results: No significant gender differences were found in wave latency - p = 0.19 and p = 0.50 for waves P13 and N23, respectively. No differences were found in amplitude values - p = 0.28 p = 0.40 for waves P13 and N23, respectively. Conclusion: There were no gender differences in latency and amplitude factors; the sternocleidomastoid muscle strain was monitored during the examination.

Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) was used to better understand alterations in renal metabolism induced by fluoride (F). Three groups of weanling male Wistar rats were treated with drinking water containing 0 (control), 5, or 50 ppm F for 60 days (n=6/group). Kidneys were collected for proteomic and histological (HE) analysis. After protein isolation, renal proteome profiles were examined using 2-DE and Colloidal Coomassie Blue staining. Protein spots with a 2-fold significant difference as detected by quantitative intensity analysis (image Master Platinum software) and t-test (p < 0.05) were excised and analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS (matrix assisted laser desorption ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry). The histological analysis revealed no damage in kidneys induced by F, except for a vascular congestion in the 50 ppm F group. Between control vs 50 ppm F, and control vs 5 ppm F groups, 12 and 6 differentially expressed proteins were detected, respectively. Six proteins, mainly related with metabolism, detoxification and housekeeping, were successfully identified. At the high F group, pyruvate carboxylase, a protein involved in the formation of oxaloacetate was found to be downregulated, while enoyl coenzyme A hydratase, involved in fatty acids oxidation, was found to be upregulated. Thus, proteomic analysis can provide new insights into the alterations in renal metabolism after F exposure, even in low doses. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

The research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD) are used for the classification of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Surface electromyography of the right and left masseter and temporalis muscles was performed during Maximum teeth clenching in 103 TMD patients subdivided according to the RDC/TMD into 3 non-overlapping groups: (a) 25 myogenous; (b) 61 arthrogenous; and (c) 17 psycogenous patients. Thirty-two control subjects matched for sex and age were also measured. During clenching, standardized total muscle activities (electromyographic potentials over time) significantly differed: 131.7 mu V/mu V s % in the normal subjects, 117.6 mu V/mu V s % in the myogenous patients, 105.3 mu V/mu V s % in the arthrogenous patients, 88.7 mu V/mu V s % in the psycogenous patients (p < 0.001, analysis of covariance). Symmetry in the temporalis muscles was larger in normal subjects (86.3%) and in myogenous patients (84.9%) than in arthrogenous (82.7%), and psycogenous patients (80.5%) (p=0.041). No differences were found for masseter muscle symmetry and torque coefficient (p>0.05). Surface electromyography of the masticatory muscles allowed an objective discrimination among different RDC/TMD subgroups. This evaluation could assist conventional clinical assessments.
