Gender sensitivity in national health plans in Latin America and the European Union

Objectives: To evaluate the situation regarding gender sensitivity in national health plans in Latin America and the European Union for the decade 2000–2010. Methods: A systematic search and content analysis of national health plans were carried out within 37 countries. Gender sensitivity, defined as the extent to which a health plan considers gender as a central category and develops measures to reduce any gender-related inequalities, was analysed through an ad hoc checklist. Results: The description of health problems by sex was more frequent than intervention proposals aimed at reducing gender health disparities. The greatest number of specific intervention proposals targeted at overcoming gender-based health inequalities were associated with sexual and/or reproductive health, gender based violence, the working environment and human resources training. Compared to the European Union member states, Latin American health plans were found to be generally more gender sensitive. Conclusions: National health plans are still generally lacking in gender sensitivity. Disparities exist in health policy formulation in favour of men, whilst women's health continues to be identified mainly with reproductive health. If gender sensitivity is not taken into account, efforts to improve the quality of clinical care will be insufficient as gender inequalities will persist.

Assessment of a simplified experimental procedure to evaluate impact sound reduction of floor coverings

The impact noise reduction provided by floor coverings is usually obtained in laboratory, using the methodology described in the standard EN ISO 140-8, which requires the use of standard acoustic chambers. The construction of such chambers, following the requirements described in the EN ISO 140-1, implies a significant investment, and therefore only a limited number exists in each country. Alternatives to these standard methodologies, that allow a sufficiently accurate evaluation and require lower resources, have been interesting many researchers and manufacturers. In this paper, one such strategy is discussed, where a reduced sized slab is used to determine the noise reduction provided by floor coverings, following the procedure described in the ISO/CD 16251-1 technical document. Several resilient coverings, floating floors and floating slabs are tested and the results are compared with those obtained using the procedures described in the standards EN ISO 140-8 and EN ISO 717-2.

Celebrity endorsers' performance on the “ground” and on the “floor”

This article analyzes the relationship between two types of performances, one on the ground (of a tennis court) and the other on the floor (of the stock market). The empirical application looks into the tennis player, Rafael Nadal, and his endorsing firms. The findings show a positive reaction in the market value when the tennis player wins matches in the Grand Slams, the intriguing effect being the diminishing sensitivity pattern that such reaction shows and the absence of loss aversion.

Cúpulas de crucero en templos de la provincia de Alicante (s.XVII-XIX): construcción y geometría

El objetivo es determinar las características constructivas, geométricas y materiales en la construcción de cúpulas originales de ladrillo en templos de la provincia de Alicante desde finales del siglo XVII hasta principios del siglo XIX. Se estudian 38 cruceros de iglesias y catedrales en 35 localidades alicantinas mediante recopilación de dibujos originales, levantamiento de planos, construcción en 3D, termografías y toma de muestras, todo ello seguido de un análisis comparativo de variables. Constructivamente, el 88,57 % de las cúpulas simples analizadas son de una hoja de ladrillo macizo (colocado a rosca). Geométricamente, el 97,37 % presentan planta circular y el 92,1 % peralte. El acabado azul vidriado en cubierta es el característico de la provincia (68,42 %), adornado con limatesas en color blanco. Un estudio imprescindible para establecer criterios de uso y conservación, facilitando futuras intervenciones de rehabilitación en este tipo de construcciones religiosas.
