Gender differences in anthropometric and athletic properties (e.g. strength) as well as the different net heights (2.24 vs. 2.43 m) on the same field size (8x16 m) would be reflected in the game. The literature about differences between male and female playing characteristics in beach volleyball is scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyse the differences by gender in the use of offensive zones. Study participants were 20 players (10 female and 10 male) who took part in the European Beach Volleyball Championship 2005 and 2006. Video recordings were made of the 659 points in eight matches played. The beach volleyball court was divided into six zones (z1 to z6). The results showed that men and women use different offensive zones and also were different in the percentages of ball out (15.53 and 27.38% respectively). Concretely, men players used more 1, 2, 4 and 5 zones and women 1 and 5 zones. A few differences were observed in the percentage the ball to the net (7.73 and 5.35% respectively). An understanding of the use of offensive zones is relevant to establish specific tactical training patterns for beach volleyball.

The assemblages of Early Jurassic brachiopods (Pliensbachian - Toarcian) from Sierra Espuña (Murcia Province, SE Spain) are described. This is the only area in the Internal Zones of the Betic Cordillera, corresponding to the margins of the Alborán Terrane, where Jurassic brachiopods are known to occur. In the tectonic Unit of Morrón de Totana (more southward located) assemblage MT1 of Late Pliensbachian age has been characterized. This assemblage has been subdivided into three successive sub-assemblages: MT1a (Algovianum Zone), MT1b (Emaciatum Zone, Solare Subzone) and MT1c (Emaciatum Zone, Elisa Subzone). Northward, in the Perona tectonic Unit two distinct assemblages, P1 (Latest Sinemurian - Early Pliensbachian) and P2 (Early Toarcian, Serpentinum Zone) have been recognized. Differences between the assemblages from the two tectonic units are evident after the paleobiogeographical analysis. In the Morrón de Totana Unit, taxa with Mediterranean affinities occur. MT1 assemblage is very similar to assemblages previously known in the Eastern Subbetic as well as in other areas of the Mediterranean Province. In the Perona Unit the Mediterranean affinity of the assemblages is not so evident. P1 Assemblage consists of widely distributed taxa, lacking in the most characteristic elements of the Mediterranean Province which, however, are present in neighbouring Betic areas. P2 Assemblage belongs to the Spanish Province that develops in Western Tethys after the Early Toarcian Mass Extinction Event. The occurrence in this assemblage of Prionorhynchia aff. msougari Rousselle, until now only found in North Africa, indicates a closer connection of the Perona Unit with the African paleomargin of the Tethys than with the South Iberian paleomargin. The paleobiogeographical data suggest a more southern and marginal (close to epicontinental areas) position of the Perona Unit than the Morrón de Totana Unit.

A Rh phosphine complex, derived from the Wilkinson’s catalyst, has been immobilized by ion-exchange on the ammonium form of a Al-MCM-41 sample. Ammonium ions have been exchanged by cholamine ions, which act as an amine ligand, and then the Wilkinson’s catalyst has been immobilized by substitution of a phosphine ligand by the anchored amine. This is a novel immobilization procedure, as a ligand, instead of the whole complex, is tethered to the support by ion exchange. The obtained hybrid catalyst has been characterized by Elemental Analysis, DRIFTS and XPS. The quantitative exchange of ammonium by cholamine and coordination of Rh to amines has been observed. Most of the anchored Rh is considered to be coordinated to the ligand tethered to the support and a small proportion seems to be interacting with the protonated ligand or with the support surface. The catalyst has been tested in the hydrogenation of cyclohexene and in the hydroformylation of 1-octene. In the first case the catalyst is active and reusable, while a strong Rh leaching takes place in the second one.

The Growing Neural Gas model is used widely in artificial neural networks. However, its application is limited in some contexts by the proliferation of nodes in dense areas of the input space. In this study, we introduce some modifications to address this problem by imposing three restrictions on the insertion of new nodes. Each restriction aims to maintain the homogeneous values of selected criteria. One criterion is related to the square error of classification and an alternative approach is proposed for avoiding additional computational costs. Three parameters are added that allow the regulation of the restriction criteria. The resulting algorithm allows models to be obtained that suit specific needs by specifying meaningful parameters.

Preparation of homogeneous CNT coatings in insulating silica capillary tubes is carried out by an innovative electrochemically-assisted method in which the driving force for the deposition is the change in pH inside the confined space between the inner electrode and the capillary walls. This method represents a great advancement in the development of CNT coatings following a simple, cost-effective methodology.

This note provides an approximate version of the Hahn–Banach theorem for non-necessarily convex extended-real valued positively homogeneous functions of degree one. Given p : X → R∪{+∞} such a function defined on the real vector space X, and a linear function defined on a subspace V of X and dominated by p (i.e. (x) ≤ p(x) for all x ∈ V), we say that can approximately be p-extended to X, if is the pointwise limit of a net of linear functions on V, every one of which can be extended to a linear function defined on X and dominated by p. The main result of this note proves that can approximately be p-extended to X if and only if is dominated by p∗∗, the pointwise supremum over the family of all the linear functions on X which are dominated by p.

Due to confidentiality considerations, the microdata available from the 2011 Spanish Census have been codified at a provincial (NUTS 3) level except when the municipal (LAU 2) population exceeds 20,000 inhabitants (a requirement that is met by less than 5% of all municipalities). For the remainder of the municipalities within a given province, information is only provided for their classification in wide population intervals. These limitations, hampering territorially-focused socio-economic analyses, and more specifically, those related to the labour market, are observed in many other countries. This article proposes and demonstrates an automatic procedure aimed at delineating a set of areas that meet such population requirements and that may be used to re-codify the geographic reference in these cases, thereby increasing the territorial detail at which individual information is available. The method aggregates municipalities into clusters based on the optimisation of a relevant objective function subject to a number of statistical constraints, and is implemented using evolutionary computation techniques. Clusters are defined to fit outer boundaries at the level of labour market areas.
