Ultrathin and transparent nanostructured Ni(OH)2 films were deposited on conducting glass (F:SnO2) by a urea-based chemical bath deposition method. By controlling the deposition time, the amount of deposited Ni(OH)2 was varied over 7 orders of magnitude. The turnover number for O2 generation, defined as the number of O2 molecules generated per catalytic site (Ni atom) and per second, increases drastically as the electrocatalyst amount decreases. The electrocatalytic activity of the studied samples (measured as the current density at a certain potential) increases with the amount of deposited Ni(OH)2 until a saturation value is already obtained for a thin film of around 1 nm in thickness, composed of Ni(OH)2 nanoplatelets lying flat on the conductive support. The deposition of additional amounts of catalyst generates a porous honeycomb structure that does not improve (only maintains) the electrocatalytic activity. The optimized ultrathin electrodes show a remarkable stability, which indicates that the preparation of highly transparent electrodes, efficient for oxygen evolution, with a minimum amount of nickel is possible.

Composite materials made of porous SiO2 matrices filled with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were deposited on electrodes by an electroassisted deposition method. The synthesized materials were characterized by several techniques, showing that porous silica prevents the aggregation of SWCNT on the electrodes, as could be observed by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Different redox probes were employed to test their electrochemical sensing properties. The silica layer allows the permeation of the redox probes to the electrode surface and improves the electrochemical reversibility indicating an electrocatalytic effect by the incorporation of dispersed SWCNT into the silica films.

The Global Experiment, Water: A Chemical Solution, was one of the flagship activities of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC). During the virtual colloquium of the spring 2012 online ConfChem conference, the main results of this year-long experiment were presented and discussed online for a week. Some of the main conclusions of the virtual conversations relate to the benefits of creating online communities of people sharing similar interests, the use of online educational platforms to gather massive amounts of data, and specific questions about the development of this IYC initiative. The activities of the global water experiment (GWE) were designed by a team of experts and the protocols are available online on the GWE Web site. The results were shown in one interactive world map that allowed students to learn about data visualization, validation, and interpretation. The feedback obtained from the participants of the GWE and later by the contributors of the virtual colloquium was very positive. Many participants asked specific and technical questions about the development of this experiment, while others excitedly endorsed the convenience of these large open-access activities to promote chemistry worldwide. The estimate is that over 2 million people took part in the GWE during the IYC. This communication summarizes one of the invited papers to the ConfChem online conference: A Virtual Colloquium to Sustain and Celebrate IYC 2011 Initiatives in Global Chemical Education, held from May 18 to June 29, 2012 and hosted by the ACS DivCHED Committee on Computers in Chemical Education and the IUPAC Committee on Chemistry Education.

Porous, electrically insulating SiO2 layers containing polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) were deposited on glassy carbon electrodes by an electrochemically assisted deposition method. The obtained material was characterized by microscopic, spectroscopic and thermal techniques. Silica-PSS films modify the electrochemical response of the glassy carbon electrodes against selected redox probes. Positively charged species show reduced diffusivities across the SiO2-PSS pores, which resulted in a concentration ratio higher than 1 for these species. The opposite behaviour was found for negatively charged redox probes. These observations can be interpreted in terms of the different affinity of the GC/SiO2-PSS-modified electrode for the electroactive species, as a consequence of the negatively charged porous silica.

Hydrogenated amorphous carbon (a-C:H) films were grown on a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) substrate by means of a radiofrequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (rf-PECVD) technique with different deposition times (5, 20 and 40 min). The main goal of this treatment was to increase the barrier properties of PLA, maintaining its original transparency and colour as well as controlling interactions with food simulants for packaging applications. Morphological, chemical, and mechanical properties of PLA/a-C:H systems were evaluated while permeability and overall migration tests were performed in order to determine the effect of the plasma treatment on the gas-barrier properties of PLA films and their application in food packaging. Morphological results suggested a good adhesion of the deposited layers onto the polymer surface and the samples treated for 5 and 20 min only slightly darkened the PLA film. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the structural properties of the carbon layer deposited onto the PLA film depend on the exposure time. PLA/a-C:H system treated for 5 min showed the highest barrier properties, while none of the studied samples exceeded the migration limit established by the current legislation, suggesting the suitability of these materials in packaging applications.

TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) have been widely used for a number of applications including solar cells, photo(electro)chromic devices, and photocatalysis. Their quasi-one-dimensional morphology has the advantage of a fast electron transport although they have a relatively reduced interfacial area compared with nanoparticulate films. In this study, vertically oriented, smooth TiO2 NT arrays fabricated by anodization are decorated with ultrathin anatase nanowires (NWs). This facile modification, performed by chemical bath deposition, allows to create an advantageous self-organized structure that exhibits remarkable properties. On one hand, the huge increase in the electroactive interfacial area induces an improvement by 1 order of magnitude in the charge accumulation capacity. On the other hand, the modified NT arrays display larger photocurrents for water and oxalic acid oxidation than bare NTs. Their particular morphology enables a fast transfer of photogenerated holes but also efficient mass and electron transport. The importance of a proper band energy alignment for electron transfer from the NWs to the NTs is evidenced by comparing the behavior of these electrodes with that of NTs modified with rutile NWs. The NT-NW self-organized architecture allows for a precise design and control of the interfacial surface area, providing a material with particularly attractive properties for the applications mentioned above.

We report a study of synthesising air-stable, nearly monodispersed bimetallic colloids of Co/Pd and Fe/Mo of varying compositions as active catalysts for the growth of carbon nanotubes. Using these catalysts we have investigated the effects of catalyst and substrate on the carbon nanostructures formed in a plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition (PECVD) process. We will show how it is possible to assess the influence of both the catalyst and the support on the controlled growth of carbon nanotube and nanofiber arrays. The importance of the composition of the catalytic nuclei will be put into perspective with other results from the literature. Furthermore, the influence of other synthetic parameters such as the nature of the nanoparticle catalysts will also be analysed and discussed in detail.

In the field of energy saving, finding composite materials with the ability of coloring upon both illumination and change of the applied electrode potential keeps on being an important goal. In this context, chemical bath deposition of Ni(OH)2 into nanoporous TiO2 thin films supported on conducting glass leads to electrodes showing both conventional electrochromic behavior (from colorless to dark brown and vice versa) together with photochromism at constant applied potential. The latter phenomenon, reported here for the first time, is characterized by fast and reversible coloration upon UV illumination. The bleaching kinetics shows first order behavior with respect to the NiIII centers in the film, and an order 1.2 with respect to electrons in the TiO2 film. From a more applied point of view, this study opens up the possibility of having two-mode smart windows showing not only conventional electrochromism but also reversible darkening upon illumination.

Solution-processed polymer films are used in multiple technological applications. The presence of residual solvent in the film, as a consequence of the preparation method, affects the material properties, so films are typically subjected to post-deposition thermal annealing treatments aiming at its elimination. Monitoring the amount of solvent eliminated as a function of the annealing parameters is important to design a proper treatment to ensure complete solvent elimination, crucial to obtain reproducible and stable material properties and therefore, device performance. Here we demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, the use of an organic distributed feedback (DFB) laser to monitor with high precision the amount of solvent extracted from a spin-coated polymer film as a function of the thermal annealing time. The polymer film of interest, polystyrene in the present work, is doped with a small amount of a laser dye as to constitute the active layer of the laser device and deposited over a reusable DFB resonator. It is shown that solvent elimination translates into shifts in the DFB laser wavelength, as a consequence of changes in film thickness and refractive index. The proposed method is expected to be applicable to other types of annealing treatments, polymer-solvent combinations or film deposition methods, thus constituting a valuable tool to accurately control the quality and reproducibility of solution-processed polymer thin films.

A synthetic procedure to prepare novel materials (surface-mediated fillings) based on robust hierarchical monoliths is reported. The methodology includes the deposition of a (micro- or mesoporous) silica thin film on the support followed by growth of a porous monolithic SiO2 structure. It has been demonstrated that this synthesis is viable for supports of different chemical nature with different inner diameters without shrinkage of the silica filling. The formation mechanism of the surface-mediated fillings is based on a solution/precipitation process and the anchoring of the silica filling to the deposited thin film. The interaction between the two SiO2 structures (monolith and thin film) depends on the porosity of the thin film and yields composite materials with different mechanical stability. By this procedure, capillary microreactors have been prepared and have been proved to be highly active and selective in the total and preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide (TOxCO and PrOxCO).

A novel polymer/TiC nanocomposites “PPA/TiC, poly(PA-co-ANI)/TiC and PANI/TiC” was successfully synthesized by chemical oxidation polymerization at room temperature using p-anisidine and/or aniline monomers and titanium carbide (TiC) in the presence of hydrochloric acid as a dopant with ammonium persulfate as oxidant. These nanocomposites obtained were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). XRD indicated the presence of interactions between polymers and TiC nanoparticle and the TGA revealed that the TiC nanoparticles improve the thermal stability of the polymers. The electrical conductivity of nanocomposites is in the range of 0.079–0.91 S cm−1. The electrochemical behavior of the polymers extracted from the nanocomposites has been analyzed by cyclic voltammetry. Good electrochemical response has been observed for polymer films; the observed redox processes indicate that the polymerisation on TiC nanoparticles produces electroactive polymers. These nanocomposite microspheres can potentially used in commercial applications as fillers for antistatic and anticorrosion coatings.

Superstructure approaches are the solution to the difficult problem which involves the rigorous economic design of a distillation column. These methods require complex initialization procedures and they are hard to solve. For this reason, these methods have not been extensively used. In this work, we present a methodology for the rigorous optimization of chemical processes implemented on a commercial simulator using surrogate models based on a kriging interpolation. Several examples were studied, but in this paper, we perform the optimization of a superstructure for a non-sharp separation to show the efficiency and effectiveness of the method. Noteworthy that it is possible to get surrogate models accurate enough with up to seven degrees of freedom.

Carbon-supported Pt–Sn catalysts commonly contain Pt–Sn alloy and/or Pt–Sn bimetallic systems (Sn oxides). Nevertheless, the origin of the promotion effect due to the presence of Sn in the Pt–Sn/C catalyst towards ethanol oxidation in acid media is still under debate and some contradictions. Herein, a series of Ptx–Sny/C catalysts with different atomic ratios are synthesized by a deposition process using formic acid as the reducing agent. Catalysts structure and chemical compositions are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and their relationship with catalytic behavior towards ethanol electro-oxidation was established. Geometric structural changes are producing by highest Sn content (Pt1–Sn1/C) promoted the interaction of Pt and Sn forming a solid solution of Pt–Sn alloy phase, whereas, the intermediate and lowest Sn content (Pt2–Sn1/C and Pt3–Sn1/C, respectively) promoted the electronic structure modifications of Pt by Sn addition without the formation of a solid solution. The amount of Sn added affects the physical and chemical characteristics of the bimetallic catalysts as well as reducing the amount of Pt in the catalyst composition and maintaining the electrocatalytic activities at the anode. However, the influence of the Sn oxidation state in Pt–Sn/C catalysts surfaces and the alloy formation between Pt and Sn as well as with the atomic ratio on their catalytic activity towards ethanol oxidation appears minimal. Similar methodologies applied for synthesis of Ptx–Sny/C catalysts with a small change show differences with the results obtained, thus highlighting the importance of the conditions of the preparation method.
