To examine the role of the effector dynamics of the wrist in the production of rhythmic motor activity, we estimated the phase shifts between the EMG and the task-related output for a rhythmic isometric torque production task and an oscillatory movement, and found a substantial difference (45-52degrees) between the two. For both tasks, the relation between EMG and task-related output (torque or displacement) was adequately reproduced with a physiologically motivated musculoskeletal model. The model simulations demonstrated the importance of the contribution of passive structures to the overall dynamics and provided an account for the observed phase shifts in the dynamic task. Additional simulations of the musculoskeletal model with added load suggested that particular changes in the phase relation between EMG and movement may follow largely from the intrinsic muscle dynamics, rather than being the result of adaptations in the neural control of joint stiffness. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to (models of) interlimb coordination in rhythmic tasks. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Supporting the forearm on the work surface during keyboard operation may increase comfort, decrease muscular load of the neck and shoulders, and decrease the time spent in ulnar deviation. Wrist rests are used widely in the workplace and are more commonly being incorporated in keyboard design. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of wrist rest use on wrist posture during forearm Support. A laboratory based, experimental study was conducted (subjects n = 15) to examine muscle activity and wrist Postures during keyboard and mouse tasks in each of' two conditions; wrist rest and no wrist rest. There were no significant differences for right wrist flexion/extension between use of a wrist rest and no wrist rest for keyboard or mouse use. Left wrist extension was significantly higher without a wrist rest than with a wrist rest during keyboard use (df = 14; t = 2.95; p = 0.01; d = 0.38). No differences with respect to use of a wrist rest were found for the left or right hand for ulnar deviation For keyboard or mouse use. There were no differences in muscle activity between the test conditions for keyboard use. Relevance to industry Wrist rests are used widely in the workplace and are more commonly being incorporated in keyboard design. Use of a wrist rest in conjunction with forearm support when using a conventional desk does not appear to have any impact on wrist posture or muscle activity during keyboard use. The breast cancer susceptibility gene Brca1 encodes a large multi-functional protein which is implicated as a caretaker of the genome, through its role in regulation of DNA damage response pathways, including apoptosis. Here we show that in mice expressing a dominant-negative Brca1 transgene on a BALB/c background, vaginal entrance remodeling is inhibited, and that the incidence of this phenotype is increased on a p53 +/- genotype. Given that this developmental process is mediated primarily by apoptosis, we hypothesized that disruption of BRCA1 may confer a resistance to apoptosis in normal epithelial cells. Consistent with this, we show that expression of this transgene in vitro leads to resistance to ionizing radiation induced cell killing in mammary epithelial cells. This is the first time that BRCA1 has been implicated in an apoptosis-mediated normal developmental process.

Objectives. It has been proposed that disruption of the internal proprioceptive representation, via incongruent sensory input, may underpin pathological pain states, but experimental evidence relies on conflicting visual input, which is not clinically relevant. We aimed to determine the symptomatic effect of incongruent proprioceptive input, imparted by vibration of the wrist tendons, which evokes the illusion of perpetual wrist flexion and disrupts cortical proprioceptive representation. Methods. Twenty-nine healthy and naive volunteers reported symptoms during five conditions: control, active and passive wrist flexion, extensor carpi radialis tendon vibration to evoke illusion of perpetual wrist flexion, and ulnar styloid (sham) vibration. No advice was given about possible illusions. Results. Twenty-one subjects reported the illusion of perpetual wrist flexion during tendon vibration. There was no effect of condition or of whether or not subjects reported an illusion on discomfort/pain (P > 0.28). Peculiarity, swelling and foreignness were greater during tendon vibration than during the other conditions, and greater during tendon vibration in those who reported an illusion of wrist flexion than in those who did not (P < 0.05 for all). Symptoms were reported by at least two subjects in each condition and four subjects reported systemic symptoms (e.g. nausea). Conclusions. In healthy volunteers, incongruent proprioceptive input does not cause discomfort or pain but does evoke feelings of peculiarity, swelling and foreignness in the limb.

Understanding arterial distensibility has shown to be important in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular abnormalities like hypertension. It is also known that arterial pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a measure of the elasticity or stiffness of peripheral arterial blood vessels. However, it generally requires complex instrumentations to have an accurate measurement and not suited for continual monitoring. In this paper, it describes a simple and non-intrusive method to detect the cardiovascular pulse from a human wrist above the radial artery and a fingertip. The main components of this proposed method are a piezoelectric transducer and a photo-plethysmography circuitry. 5 healthy adults (4 male) with age ranging from 25 to 38 years were recruited. The timing consistency of the detected pulsations is first evaluated and compared to that obtained from a commercial electrocardiogram. Furthermore, the derived PWV is then assessed by the predicted values attained from regression equations of two previous similar studies. The results show good correlations (p < 0.05) and similarities for the former and latter respectively. The simplicity and non-invasive nature of the proposed method can be attractive for even younger or badly disturbed patients. Moreover, it can be used for prolonged monitoring for the comfort of the patients.
