The Jiaodong gold province is the largest gold repository in China. Both mineralization and granitoid hosts are spatially related to the crustal-scale Tan-Lu strike-slip fault system, which developed along the Mesozoic continental margin in eastern China. A series of Ar-40/Ar-39 laser incremental heating analyses of hydrothermal sericite/muscovite from three major gold deposits (Jiaojia, Xincheng, and Wangershan) and igneous biotite from the granodiorite hosts were performed to establish a possible temporal link between gold mineralization, magmatism, and movement along the Tan-Lu fault zone. Magmatic biotite crystals yield well-defined and concordant plateau ages between 124.5+/-0.4 Ma and 124.0+/-0.4 Ma (2sigma), whereas sericite and muscovite samples (a total of 30 single separates) give reproducible plateau ages ranging from 121.0+/-0.4 Ma to 119.2+/-0.2 Ma (2sigma). An integration of our Ar-40/Ar-39 results with age data from other major gold deposits in Jiaodong demonstrates that widespread gold mineralization occurred contemporaneously during a 2-3-m.yr. period. Most gold deposits show intimate spatial associations with abundant mafic to intermediate dikes. The mafic dikes have K-Ar ages of 123.5-119.6 Ma, in excellent agreement with those of the gold deposits. These newly obtained Ar-40/Ar-39 ages, in combination with other independent geological and geochronological data on granodioritic intrusions (130-126 Ma), volcanic rocks (1243.6-114.7 Ma), and deformed rocks within strike-slip faults (132-120 Ma) in Jiaodong or adjacent areas, also support the idea that gold mineralization postdated the granodioritic magmatism but was contemporaneous with mafic magmatism and volcanism, all controlled by the transtensional motion along the Tan-Lu fault in the Early Cretaceous.

The classical strength profile of continents(1,2) is derived from a quasi-static view of their rheological response to stress-one that does not consider dynamic interactions between brittle and ductile layers. Such interactions result in complexities of failure in the brittle-ductile transition and the need to couple energy to understand strain localization. Here we investigate continental deformation by solving the fully coupled energy, momentum and continuum equations. We show that this approach produces unexpected feedback processes, leading to a significantly weaker dynamic strength evolution. In our model, stress localization focused on the brittle-ductile transition leads to the spontaneous development of mid-crustal detachment faults immediately above the strongest crustal layer. We also find that an additional decoupling layer forms between the lower crust and mantle. Our results explain the development of decoupling layers that are observed to accommodate hundreds of kilometres of horizontal motions during continental deformation.

This study presents the first attempt to constrain the evolution of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) by age dating and isotope tracing of clay minerals formed during near-surface faulting. Extensive illitic clay mineralisation occurred along the NAFZ related to hydrothermal alteration of the fault gouges and pseudotachylytes. Samples representing the pre-fault protoliths outside the fault zone do not contain authigenic illitic clay minerals indicating that hydrothermal processes were confined to the areas within the fault zone. K-Ar age data indicate that the hydrothermal system and the associated illite authigenesis initiated at similar to 57 Ma. This process is interpreted to reflect the onset of significant strike-slip or transtensional faulting immediately after the continental collision related to the closure of the Neotethys Ocean. Following the initiation of the fault movements in the latest Paleocene-Early Eocene, displacements along the NAFZ have continued, with probably intensified fault activities at similar to 26 Ma and later than similar to 8 Ma. Oxygen isotope compositions of the illitic clays from different locations along the NAFZ are similar, with narrow ranges in delta O-18 values indicating clay precipitation from fluids with similar oxygen isotope compositions and crystallisation temperatures. The delta O-18 and delta D values of the calculated fluid isotopic composition (delta O-18=5.9 parts per thousand to 11.2 parts per thousand, delta D=-59 parts per thousand to -73 parts per thousand) are consistent with metamorphic and magmatic origin of fluids mobilised during active tectonism. The interpretation of the fluid flow history of the NAFZ is in agreement with that reported previously for some well-known large-scale high-angle fault zones, which similarly developed along collisional-type orogenic belts and are commonly associated with significant mesothermal ore mineralisation. We have developed a way to represent Mohr-Coulomb failure within a mantle-convection fluid dynamics code. We use a viscous model of deformation with an orthotropic viscoplasticity (a different viscosity is used for pure shear to that used for simple shear) to define a prefered plane for slip to occur given the local stress field. The simple-shear viscosity and the deformation can then be iterated to ensure that the yield criterion is always satisfied. We again assume the Boussinesq approximation, neglecting any effect of dilatancy on the stress field. An additional criterion is required to ensure that deformation occurs along the plane aligned with maximum shear strain-rate rather than the perpendicular plane, which is formally equivalent in any symmetric formulation. We also allow for strain-weakening of the material. The material can remember both the accumulated failure history and the direction of failure. We have included this capacity in a Lagrangian-integration-point finite element code and show a number of examples of extension and compression of a crustal block with a Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The formulation itself is general and applies to 2- and 3-dimensional problems.

Understanding and explaining emergent constitutive laws in the multi-scale evolution from point defects, dislocations and two-dimensional defects to plate tectonic scales is an arduous challenge in condensed matter physics. The Earth appears to be the only planet known to have developed stable plate tectonics as a means to get rid of its heat. The emergence of plate tectonics out of mantle convection appears to rely intrinsically on the capacity to form extremely weak faults in the top 100 km of the planet. These faults have a memory of at least several hundred millions of years, yet they appear to rely on the effects of water on line defects. This important phenomenon was first discovered in laboratory and dubbed ``hydrolytic weakening''. At the large scale it explains cycles of co-located resurgence of plate generation and consumption (the Wilson cycle), but the exact physics underlying the process itself and the enormous spanning of scales still remains unclear. We present an attempt to use the multi-scale non-equilibrium thermodynamic energy evolution inside the deforming lithosphere to move phenomenological laws to laws derived from basic scaling quantities, develop self-consistent weakening laws at lithospheric scale and give a fully coupled deformation-weakening constitutive framework. At meso- to plate scale we encounter in a stepwise manner three basic domains governed by the diffusion/reaction time scales of grain growth, thermal diffusion and finally water mobility through point defects in the crystalline lattice. The latter process governs the planetary scale and controls the stability of its heat transfer mode.
