A new approach to control of MIMO processes with static nonlinearities using an extended IMC framework

In this paper, a new control design method is proposed for stable processes which can be described using Hammerstein-Wiener models. The internal model control (IMC) framework is extended to accommodate multiple IMC controllers, one for each subsystem. The concept of passive systems is used to construct the IMC controllers which approximate the inverses of the subsystems to achieve dynamic control performance. Website physical activity interventions: preferences of potential users

Information and communication technologies (particularly websites and e-mail) have the potential to deliver health behavior change programs to large numbers of adults at low cost. Controlled trials using these new media to promote physical activity have produced mixed results. User-centered development methods can assist in understanding the preferences of potential participants for website functions and content, and may lead to more effective programs. Eight focus group discussions were conducted with 40 adults after they had accessed a previously trialed physical activity website. The discussions were audio taped, transcribed and interpreted using a themed analysis method. Four key themes emerged: structure, interactivity, environmental context and content. Preferences were expressed for websites that include simple interactive features, together with information on local community activity opportunities. Particular suggestions included online community notice boards, personalized progress charts, e-mail access to expert advice and access to information on specific local physical activity facilities and services. Website physical activity interventions could usefully include personally relevant interactive and environmentally focused features and services identified through a user-centered development process.

A magnetization mapping approach for passive shim design in MRI

A new passive shim design method is presented which is based on a magnetization mapping approach. Well defined regions with similar magnetization values define the optimal number of passive shims, their shape and position. The new design method is applied in a shimming process without prior-axial shim localization; this reduces the possibility of introducing new errors. The new shim design methodology reduces the number of iterations and the quantity of material required to shim a magnet. Only a few iterations (1-5) are required to shim a whole body horizontal bore magnet with a manufacturing error tolerance larger than 0.1 mm and smaller than 0.5 mm. The article presents information on the various papers published in the December 2005 issue of the periodical "Australian Journal of Communication." In one of the papers, author Jane Johnston updates her earlier work on communication in the Australian court system by examining the courts' communication with the media. Chika Anyanwu makes a contribution to the literature on diasporic discourses by explaining the ways in which the new media technologies have redefined diaspora by enabling diasporic citizens to connect with their homelands. In their paper, Mark Balnaves and Kim Tomlinson-Baillie outline strategies that the international games industry brings to play when developing games, allowing children to participate in and change the narrative as it progresses through to a new world.

Making the link between engineering management and undergraduate research

This paper describes and analyses an innovative engineering management course that applies a project management framework in the context of a feasibility study for a prospective research project. The aim is to have students learn aspects of management that will be relevant from the outset of their professional career while simultaneously having immediate value in helping them to manage a research project and capstone design project in their senior year. An integral part of this innovation was the development of a web-based project management tool. While the main objectives of the new course design were achieved, a number of important lessons were learned that would guide the further development and continuous improvement of this course. The most critical of these is the need to achieve the optimum balance in the mind of the students between doing the project and critically analyzing the processes used to accomplish the work.
