This research extends the consumer-based brand equity measurement approach to the measurement of the equity associated with retailers. This paper also addresses some of the limitations associated with current retailer equity measurement such as a lack of clarity regarding its nature and dimensionality. We conceptualise retailer equity as a four-dimensional construct comprising retailer awareness, retailer associations, perceived retailer quality, and retailer loyalty. The paper reports the result of an empirical study of a convenience sample of 601 shopping mall consumers at an Australian state capital city. Following a confirmatory factor analysis using structural equation modelling to examine the dimensionality of the retailer equity construct, the proposed model is tested for two retailer categories: department stores and speciality stores. Results confirm the hypothesised four-dimensional structure.

Despite the now well developed use of sponsorship-linked marketing, there have been few methodological advances in the measurement of sponsorship constructs and outcomes. This paper offers a preliminary development of an activity index for use in the sponsorship marketing context. The activity index seeks to capture the consumer's extended experience with sport (rugby) and considers the relationship of this overall experience to sponsorship-related outcomes of interest. Initial development of the index, based on a convenience sample of 108 people visiting a sports centre, shows promise.

In spite of the prominence assigned to innovation in the strategic marketing literature particularly in the area of competitive strategy there have been several inadequacies in the conceptualization and measurement of the innovation construct. Responding to the need for a comprehensive measure, this paper attempts to develop and validate a measure for organisational innovation. Addressing the need to capture both the degree and type of innovation, as well as the synergistic influence of innovation types on performance outcomes, this paper proposes operationalising organisational innovation as a multidimensional construct. The proposed measure has a complex higher order structure that captures the variance in its dimensions that are different forms manifested by the construct. The measure also captures the synergistic impact of different innovation types on competitive advantage. The implications for theory, limitations and directions for future research are presented.

This study determined the inter-tester and intra-tester reliability of physiotherapists measuring functional motor ability of traumatic brain injury clients using the Clinical Outcomes Variable Scale (COVS). To test inter-tester reliability, 14 physiotherapists scored the ability of 16 videotaped patients to execute the items that comprise the COVS. Intra-tester reliability was determined by four physiotherapists repeating their assessments after one week, and three months later. The intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were very high for both inter-tester reliability (ICC > 0.97 for total COVS scores, ICC > 0.93 for individual COVS items) and intra-tester reliability (ICC > 0.97). This study demonstrates that physiotherapists are reliable in the administration of the COVS.

Extracting human postural information from video sequences has proved a difficult research question. The most successful approaches to date have been based on particle filtering, whereby the underlying probability distribution is approximated by a set of particles. The shape of the underlying observational probability distribution plays a significant role in determining the success, both accuracy and efficiency, of any visual tracker. In this paper we compare approaches used by other authors and present a cost path approach which is commonly used in image segmentation problems, however is currently not widely used in tracking applications.

Despite the increasing prevalence of salinity world-wide, the measurement of exchangeable cation concentrations in saline soils remains problematic. Two soil types (Mollisol and Vertisol) were equilibrated with a range of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) solutions at various ionic strengths. The concentrations of exchangeable cations were then determined using several different types of methods, and the measured exchangeable cation concentrations compared to reference values. At low ionic strength (low salinity), the concentration of exchangeable cations can be accurately estimated from the total soil extractable cations. In saline soils, however, the presence of soluble salts in the soil solution precludes the use of this method. Leaching of the soil with a pre-wash solution (such as alcohol) was found to effectively remove the soluble salts from the soil, thus allowing the accurate measurement of the effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC). However, the dilution associated with this pre-washing increased the exchangeable Ca concentrations while simultaneously decreasing exchangeable Na. In contrast, when calculated as the difference between the total extractable cations and the soil solution cations, good correlations were found between the calculated exchangeable cation concentrations and the reference values for both Na (Mollisol: y=0.873x and Vertisol: y=0.960x) and Ca (Mollisol: y=0.901x and Vertisol: y=1.05x). Therefore, for soils with a soil solution ionic strength greater than 50 mM (electrical conductivity of 4 dS/m) (in which exchangeable cation concentrations are overestimated by the assumption they can be estimated as the total extractable cations), concentrations can be calculated as the difference between total extractable cations and soluble cations.

We investigate in detail the effects of a QND vibrational number measurement made on single ions in a recently proposed measurement scheme for the vibrational state of a register of ions in a linear rf trap [C. D'HELON and G. J. MILBURN, Phys Rev. A 54, 5141 (1996)]. The performance of a measurement shows some interesting patterns which are closely related to searching.

Analytical electron microscopy was used to measure the composition of grain boundaries (GBs) and interconstituent boundaries (IBs) of X52 pipeline steel using specimens about 40-60 nm in thickness. All elements of interest were examined with the exception of carbon. With this caveat; there was no segregation at proeutectoid ferrite GBs. This indicated that the commonly expected species S and P are not responsible for preferential corrosion of GBs during intergranular stress corrosion cracking of pipeline steels. Manganese was the only species measured to segregate at the IBs. Manganese segregated to the IBs between proeutectoid ferrite and pearlitic cementite, and desegregated from IBs between proeutectoid ferrite and pearlitic ferrite. The pearlitic cementite was Mn rich. There was no Mn segregation at the IBs between pearlitic ferrite and pearlitic cementite. The pattern of Mn segregation could be explained in terms of diffusion in the process zone ahead of the pearlite during the austenite to pearlite transformation and diffusion in the IBs between the proeutectoid ferrite and pearlite. This is the first paper in a study on the influence of the environment on the crack tip strain field for AISI 4340. A stressing stage for the environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) was constructed which was capable of applying loads up to 60 kN to fracture-mechanics samples. The measurement of the crack tip strain field required preparation (by electron lithography or chemical etching) of a system of reference points spaced at similar to 5 mu m intervals on the sample surface, loading the sample inside an electron microscope, image processing procedures to measure the displacement at each reference point and calculation of the strain field. Two algorithms to calculate strain were evaluated. Possible sources of errors were calculation errors due to the algorithm, errors inherent in the image processing procedure and errors due to the limited precision of the displacement measurements. Estimation of the contribution of each source of error was performed. The technique allows measurement of the crack tip strain field over an area of 50 x 40 mu m with a strain precision better than +/- 0.02 at distances larger than 5 mu m from the crack tip. The purpose of the present investigation was to gain an understanding of the nature of the carbon contamination on the surface of standard steel transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) specimens, the effect of exposure of a clean specimen to normal laboratory air, and the efficacy of plasma-cleaning treatments. This knowledge is a necessary prerequisite to the development of appropriate specimen preparation and/or specimen cleaning methods. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with argon ion beam profiling was used to characterize the specimen surfaces of X65 steel and 316 stainless steel. The only clean carbon-free surface obtained was that during argon etching of the sample in the surface analysis chamber. Any exposure of a previously cleaned sample to laboratory air resulted in a rapid carbon (hydrocarbon) contamination of the sample surface and the development of surface oxidation, Plasma cleaning with subsequent exposure of the specimen to the laboratory air also resulted in a carbon-contaminated surface. This suggests that procedures of preparation of TEM specimens of steels outside an ultrahigh vacuum chamber are unlikely to result in the lowering of contamination rates on specimens to levels where measurements for carbon in the grain boundaries are possible. What is needed is a cleaning system as an integral part of the specimen insertion system into the field-emission scanning transmission electron microscope.
