My involvement with Aboriginal people began in 1972 in my final year of architecture, when a small group of students were asked to advise on some Aboriginal building projects in Mt Isa and Cloncurry. This led to my Doctoral research and grew into the Aboriginal Environments Research Centre now well established at the university of Queensland. Although the personnel of this Centre have completed over 140 field trips in the last 20 years, it is a set of data collected largely from the first ten field trips in 1972-76 that will be presented in this paper.

The catalytic activities of Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalysts prepared using different nickel precursor compounds were studied for the reaction of methane reforming with CO2. It is found that the nickel precursor employed in the catalyst preparation plays an important role. The catalyst based on nickel nitrate exhibited higher catalytic activity and stability over a 24-h test period than the other two catalysts derived from nickel chloride and nickel acetylacetonate. A comprehensive characterisation of the catalysts showed that the weak interaction between Ni particles and gamma-Al2O3 resulted in more active sites on Ni nitrate-derived Ni/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. Coking studies showed that carbon deposition on Ni catalysts derived from inorganic precursors (nitrate and chloride) were more severe than on the organic precursor-derived catalyst. However, the Ni nitrate-derived catalyst was found to have the highest stability (or lowest deactivation rate) mainly due to the active carbon species (-C-C-) of the resulting graphitic structure and their close contact with the metal particles. In contrast, the carbon formed on Ni-AA catalyst (from Ni acetylacetonate) is dominated by inactive -CO-C- species, thus leading to a rapid accumulation of carbon in this catalyst and more severe deactivation. Carbonaceous adsorbents were prepared by heat treatment of coal reject at 600 degrees C, after chemical treatment in HNO3, H2SO4, and NaOH at 25 and 75 degrees C. Pore structure characterization and the phenol adsorption capacities of the adsorbents showed that nitric acid pretreatment significantly enhanced the surface properties, consequently the adsorption capacities of the adsorbents. A number of samples were subsequently prepared by carbonizing coal reject at 600 degrees C, after pretreatment in HNO3 under various conditions. The acid concentration, residence time, and reaction temperature were varied to obtain adsorbents with various pore structures. The adsorption capacities of the derived adsorbents for phenol, p-nitrophenol, and benzene were measured to gain further insights into the pore structure evolution. Adsorption isotherms of phenol, p-nitrophenol, and p-chlorophenol on the best adsorbent prepared were determined and correlated with theoretical isotherm equations, such as the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Redlich-Peterson equations.

The substitution reactions of SMe2 by phosphines (PMePh2, PEtPh2, PPh3, P(4-MeC6H4)(3), P(3-MeC6H4)(3), PCy3) on Pt-IV complexes having a cyclometalated imine ligand, two methyl groups in a cis-geometrical arrangement, a halogen, and a dimethyl sulfide as ligands, [Pt(CN)(CH3)(2)(X)(SMe2)], have been studied as a function of temperature, solvent, and electronic and steric characteristics of the phosphines and the X and CN ligands. In all cases, a limiting dissociative mechanism has been found, where the dissociation of the SMe2 ligand corresponds to the rate-determining step. The pentacoordinated species formed behaves as a true pentacoordinated Pt-IV compound in a steady-state concentration, given the solvent independence of the rate constant. The X-ray crystal structures of two of the dimethyl sulfide complexes and a derivative of the pentacoordinate intermediate have been determined. Differences in the individual rate constants for the entrance of the phosphine ligand can only be estimated as reactivity ratios. In all cases an effect of the phosphine size is detected, indicating that an associative step takes place from the pentacoordinated intermediate. The nature of the (CN) imine and X ligands produces differences in the dimethyl sulfide dissociation reactions rates, which can be quantified by the corresponding DeltaS double dagger values (72, 64, 48, 31, and 78 J K-1 mol(-1) for CN/X being C6H4CHNCH2C6H5/Br, C6H4CHNCH2-(2,4,6-(CH3)(3))C6H2/Br, C6H4CHNCH2C6H5/Cl, C6Cl4CHNCH2C6H5/Cl, and C6W4CH2NCHC6H5/ Pr, respectively). As a whole, the donor character of the coordinated C-aromatic and X atoms have the greatest influence on the dissociativeness of the rate-determining step.

The modified fatty acids, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9,12-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-9,12,15-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)acetic acid, 3-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)]propionic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)succinic acid, N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]glycine and N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]aspartic acid, all react with soybean 15-lipoxygenase. The products were treated with triphenylphosphine to give alcohols, which were isolated using HPLC. Analysis of the alcohols using negative ion tandem electrospray mass spectrometry, and by comparison with compounds obtained by autoxidation of arachidonic acid, shows that each enzyme catalysed oxidation occurs at the omega -6 position of the substrate. In a similar fashion, it has been found that (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9,12-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-9,12,15-trienyloxy)acetic acid, (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)acetic acid and N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8, 11.14-tetraenylthio)]propionic acid each undergoes regioselective oxidation at the carboxyl end of the polyene moiety on treatment with potato 5-lipoxygenase. Neither (all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenylthio)succinic acid nor N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]aspartic acid reacts in the presence of this enzyme, while N-[(all-Z)-(eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraenoyl)]glycine affords the C11' oxidation product. The alcohol derived from (Z,Z,Z)-(octadeca-6,9, 12-trienyloxy)acetic acid using the 15-lipoxygenase reacts at the C6' position with the 5-lipoxygenase. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. The ground and excited state geometry of the six-coordinate copper(II) ion is examined in detail using the CuF64- and Cu(H2O)(6)(2+) complexes as examples. A variety of spectroscopic techniques are used to illustrate the relations between the geometric and electronic properties of these complexes through the characterization of their potential energy surfaces.

Flash vacuum thermolysis of a large variety of heterocyclic compounds is a useful means of production of ketenes, ketenimines, thioketenes, allenes, iminopropadienones, bis(imino)propadienes, iminopropadienethiones, carbodiimides, isothiocyanates, acetylenes, fulminic acid, nitrile imines and nitrile ylides, nitriles, cyanamides, cyanates, and other compounds, often in preparatively useful yields.

The prevalence of neoplasia in birds is generally low; however, in some species of companion and aviary birds, the incidence is high and neoplasia is a common cause of death. Surgical excision or limb amputation has been performed as the therapeutic plan. Chemotherapy in the treatment of avian neoplasia is largely empirical and poorly documented. For example, cisplatin has been used intralesionally in macaws (Ara species) with limited clinical success. Eight sulphur-crested cockatoos (Cacatua galerita), under general isoflurane anesthesia, were infused intravenously with cisplatin at 6.4 or 1.0 mg/kg over 1 hour and hydrated with lactated Ringer's solution for 1 hour before and 2 hours after cisplatin infusion. Birds were euthanatized 96 hours after infusion, except for 2 birds given the low cisplatin dose, which were euthanatized on day 35 after dosing. All birds tolerated the study procedure while under anesthesia. Blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate did not change significantly. In the low-dose group, the mean cloacal temperature decreased significantly during the infusion period (P < .001) and then rose progressively to preinfusion values by 24 hours. Also in this group, the mean body weight tended to increase during the infusion period before significantly decreasing (P < .05) by 5% at 96 hours after dosing. At 24 hours after dosing, all birds were bright and eating. However, intermittent regurgitation and fecal changes (moist, dark green feces and yellow urates) occurred in 3 of 8 birds, especially those given the high dose. By 72 hours after dosing, droppings in the low-dose group were normal in appearance. One bird in the high-dose group died by 94 hours after dosing. Myelosuppression was not observed in any bird and at necropsy, no evidence of cisplatin toxicity was found except in 1 bird given the high cisplatin dose. On histology, this bird showed nephrotoxicity, and its serum uric acid levels and mean estimated white blood cell count increased significantly by 24 hours after dosing. This paper reports for the first time the effect of systemic cisplatin administration in birds and provides veterinarians data for formulating efficacious and safe protocols for platinum-containing compounds when treating neoplasia in parrots and other companion birds.
