Promoted ignition tests and quench tests have been conducted and analysed for 3.2 mm aluminum rods in 99.995% oxygen. Tests have been conducted in oxygen pressures varying from 538 kPa to 773 kPa. Samples that self-extinguished or were quenched were selected for further analysis. The microstructure of the selected samples were analysed by electron microscopy, using energy dispersive spectrometry and electron back-scatter techniques, to identify and visualize, respectively, the species present. The grain structures of these samples were etched, viewed and photographed under polarized light by an optical microscope. From the micrographs produced by the post-test analysis, clearly defined boundaries between the oxide and the melted and resolidified metal have been observed. In both the melted and resolidified metal and the oxide layer, significant numbers of gas bubbles, solid inclusions and several diffuse oxide bubbles have been captured during the cooling process. It is concluded that convective movement is occurring within the molten drop and that analysis of quenched samples provides more useful information on the state of the burning droplet than samples allowed to cool slowly to room temperature. Recommendations are made regarding future investigations into aluminum burning, focusing on the transport of reactants through the liquid oxide layer.

This paper presents results on the preparation of microcapsules containing liquid organosilica, and their co-deposition with copper in an acidic copper electrolyte onto a carbon steel cathode to form a copper/microcapsule composite coating. Microscopic analyses of the surface and the cross-section of the coating confirm the incorporation of the liquid-containing microcapsules in the coating layer. The influence of microcapsules in the electrolyte on the cathode polarization, as well as that of process conditions on the microcapsule inclusion, is also discussed. Distribution and organisation of the mineral, amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP), has been investigated in the exoskeleton of the xylophagid fly larva Exeretonevra angustifrons Hardy. While head capsule and anal plate are smooth with a thin epicuticle, the epicuticle of the body is thicker and shows unusual micro-architecture comprised of minute hemispherical (dome-shaped) protrusions. Electron microprobe analysis and energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed heterogeneity of mineral elements across body cuticle and a concentration of ACP in the epicuticle, especially associated with the hemispherical structures. Further imaging and analysis showed the bulk of the ACP to be present in nano-sized granules. It is hypothesised that the specific distribution of ACP may enhance cuticular hardness or durability without reducing flexibility. (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We herein report the synthesis of organic-inorganic hybrid poly(methyl methacrylate) containing 1 polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes. Octakis(3-hydroxypropyldimethylsiloxy)octasilsesquioxane (OHPS) was synthesized from octakis(hydridodimethylsiloxy)octasilsesquioxane [Si8O12(OSiMe2H)(8), Q(8)M(8)(H)] following literature procedures. Octakis(tnethacryloxypropyldimethylsiloxy) octasilsesquioxane (OMPS) was synthesized via the reaction of methacryloyl chloride or methacrylic acid anhydride with OHPS, with the latter giving improved purity. Polymerization of OMPS with methyl inethacrylate using a dibenzoylperoxide initiator gave a highly cross-linked polymer. Characterization of the polymer was performed using Fourier transform IR spectroscopy, Si-29 NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. The polymer was found to be largely homogeneous. Increasing the OMPS concentration in the polymer gave increased decomposition and glass transition temperatures.

We have synthesized ternary InGaAs nanowires on (111)B GaAs surfaces by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Au colloidal nanoparticles were employed to catalyze nanowire growth. We observed the strong influence of nanowire density on nanowire height, tapering, and base shape specific to the nanowires with high In composition. This dependency was attributed to the large difference of diffusion length on (111)B surfaces between In and Ga reaction species, with In being the more mobile species. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis together with high-resolution electron microscopy study of individual InGaAs nanowires shows large In/Ga compositional variation along the nanowire supporting the present diffusion model. Photoluminescence spectra exhibit a red shift with decreasing nanowire density due to the higher degree of In incorporation in more sparsely distributed InGaAs nanowires.
