The dynamics of drop formation and pinch-off have been investigated for a series of low viscosity elastic fluids possessing similar shear viscosities, but differing substantially in elastic properties. On initial approach to the pinch region, the viscoelastic fluids all exhibit the same global necking behavior that is observed for a Newtonian fluid of equivalent shear viscosity. For these low viscosity dilute polymer solutions, inertial and capillary forces form the dominant balance in this potential flow regime, with the viscous force being negligible. The approach to the pinch point, which corresponds to the point of rupture for a Newtonian fluid, is extremely rapid in such solutions, with the sudden increase in curvature producing very large extension rates at this location. In this region the polymer molecules are significantly extended, causing a localized increase in the elastic stresses, which grow to balance the capillary pressure. This prevents the necked fluid from breaking off, as would occur in the equivalent Newtonian fluid. Alternatively, a cylindrical filament forms in which elastic stresses and capillary pressure balance, and the radius decreases exponentially with time. A (0+1)-dimensional finitely extensible nonlinear elastic dumbbell theory incorporating inertial, capillary, and elastic stresses is able to capture the basic features of the experimental observations. Before the critical "pinch time" t(p), an inertial-capillary balance leads to the expected 2/3-power scaling of the minimum radius with time: R-min similar to(t(p)-t)(2/3). However, the diverging deformation rate results in large molecular deformations and rapid crossover to an elastocapillary balance for times t>t(p). In this region, the filament radius decreases exponentially with time R-min similar to exp[(t(p)-t)/lambda(1)], where lambda(1) is the characteristic time constant of the polymer molecules. Measurements of the relaxation times of polyethylene oxide solutions of varying concentrations and molecular weights obtained from high speed imaging of the rate of change of filament radius are significantly higher than the relaxation times estimated from Rouse-Zimm theory, even though the solutions are within the dilute concentration region as determined using intrinsic viscosity measurements. The effective relaxation times exhibit the expected scaling with molecular weight but with an additional dependence on the concentration of the polymer in solution. This is consistent with the expectation that the polymer molecules are in fact highly extended during the approach to the pinch region (i.e., prior to the elastocapillary filament thinning regime) and subsequently as the filament is formed they are further extended by filament stretching at a constant rate until full extension of the polymer coil is achieved. In this highly extended state, intermolecular interactions become significant, producing relaxation times far above theoretical predictions for dilute polymer solutions under equilibrium conditions. Changes in arterial distensibility have been widely used to identify the presence of cardiovascular abnormalities like hypertension. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) has shown to be related to arterial distensibility. However, the lack of suitable techniques to measure PWV nonintrusively has impeded its clinical usefulness. Pulse transit time (PTT) is a noninvasive technique derived from the principle of PWV. PTT has shown its capabilities in cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory studies in adults. However, no known study has been conducted to understand the suitability and utility of PTT to estimate PWV in children. Two computational methods to derive PWV from PTT values obtained from 23 normotensive Caucasian children (19 males, aged 5-12 years old) from their finger and toe were conducted. Furthermore, the effects of adopting different postures on the PWV derivations were investigated. Statistical analyses were performed in comparison with two previous PWV studies conducted on children. Results revealed that PWV derived from the upper limb correlated significantly (P

Studies have shown that increased arterial stiffening can be an indication of cardiovascular diseases like hypertension. In clinical practice, this can be detected by measuring the blood pressure (BP) using a sphygmomanometer but it cannot be used for prolonged monitoring. It has been established that pulse wave velocity (PWV) is a direct measure of arterial stiffening but its usefulness is hampered by the absence of non-invasive techniques to estimate it. Pulse transit time (PTT) is a simple and non-invasive method derived from PWV. However, limited knowledge of PTT in children is found in the present literature. The aims of this study are to identify independent variables that confound PTT measure and describe PTT regression equations for healthy children. Therefore, PTT reference values are formulated for future pathological studies. Fifty-five Caucasian children (39 male) aged 8.4 +/- 2.3 yr (range 5-12 yr) were recruited. Predictive equations for PTT were obtained by multiple regressions with age, vascular path length, BP indexes and heart rate. These derived equations were compared in their PWV equivalent against two previously reported equations and significant agreement was obtained (p < 0.05). Findings herein also suggested that PTT can be useful as a continuous surrogate BP monitor in children.

Finite-element simulations are used to obtain many thousands of yield points for porous materials with arbitrary void-volume fractions with spherical voids arranged in simple cubic, body-centred cubic and face-centred cubic three-dimensional arrays. Multi-axial stress states are explored. We show that the data may be fitted by a yield function which is similar to the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) form, but which also depends on the determinant of the stress tensor, and all additional parameters may be expressed in terms of standard GTN-like parameters. The dependence of these parameters on the void-volume fraction is found. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Plastic yield criteria for porous ductile materials are explored numerically using the finite-element technique. The cases of spherical voids arranged in simple cubic, body-centred cubic and face-centred cubic arrays are investigated with void volume fractions ranging from 2 % through to the percolation limit (over 90 %). Arbitrary triaxial macroscopic stress states and two definitions of yield are explored. The numerical data demonstrates that the yield criteria depend linearly on the determinant of the macroscopic stress tensor for the case of simple-cubic and body-centred cubic arrays - in contrast to the famous Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) formula - while there is no such dependence for face-centred cubic arrays within the accuracy of the finite-element discretisation. The data are well fit by a simple extension of the GTN formula which is valid for all void volume fractions, with yield-function convexity constraining the form of the extension in terms of parameters in the original formula. Simple cubic structures are more resistant to shear, while body-centred and face-centred structures are more resistant to hydrostatic pressure. The two yield surfaces corresponding to the two definitions of yield are not related by a simple scaling.

The effect of deposition conditions on characteristic mechanical properties - elastic modulus and hardness - of low-temperature PECVD silicon nitrides is investigated using nanoindentation. lt is found that increase in substrate temperature, increase in plasma power and decrease in chamber gas pressure all result in increases in elastic modulus and hardness. Strong correlations between the mechanical properties and film density are demonstrated. The silicon nitride density in turn is shown to be related to the chemical composition of the films, particularly the silicon/nitrogen ratio. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present the first characterization of the mechanical properties of lysozyme films formed by self-assembly at the air-water interface using the Cambridge interfacial tensiometer (CIT), an apparatus capable of subjecting protein films to a much higher level of extensional strain than traditional dilatational techniques. CIT analysis, which is insensitive to surface pressure, provides a direct measure of the extensional stress-strain behavior of an interfacial film without the need to assume a mechanical model (e.g., viscoelastic), and without requiring difficult-to-test assumptions regarding low-strain material linearity. This testing method has revealed that the bulk solution pH from which assembly of an interfacial lysozyme film occurs influences the mechanical properties of the film more significantly than is suggested by the observed differences in elastic moduli or surface pressure. We have also identified a previously undescribed pH dependency in the effect of solution ionic strength on the mechanical strength of the lysozyme films formed at the air-water interface. Increasing solution ionic strength was found to increase lysozyme film strength when assembly occurred at pH 7, but it caused a decrease in film strength at pH 11, close to the pI of lysozyme. This result is discussed in terms of the significant contribution made to protein film strength by both electrostatic interactions and the hydrophobic effect. Washout experiments to remove protein from the bulk phase have shown that a small percentage of the interfacially adsorbed lysozyme molecules are reversibly adsorbed. Finally, the washout tests have probed the role played by additional adsorption to the fresh interface formed by the application of a large strain to the lysozyme film and have suggested the movement of reversibly bound lysozyme molecules from a subinterfacial layer to the interface.

The elastic net and related algorithms, such as generative topographic mapping, are key methods for discretized dimension-reduction problems. At their heart are priors that specify the expected topological and geometric properties of the maps. However, up to now, only a very small subset of possible priors has been considered. Here we study a much more general family originating from discrete, high-order derivative operators. We show theoretically that the form of the discrete approximation to the derivative used has a crucial influence on the resulting map. Using a new and more powerful iterative elastic net algorithm, we confirm these results empirically, and illustrate how different priors affect the form of simulated ocular dominance columns.
