New tin(IV) complexes of empirical formula, Sn(SNNNS)I-2 (SNNNS = anionic form of the 2,6-diacetylpyridine Schiff bases of S-methyl- or S-benzyldithiocarbazate) have been prepared and characterized by a variety of physico-chemical techniques. The structure of Sn(dapsme)I-2 has been determined by single crystal X-ray crystallographic structural analysis. The complex has a seven-coordinate distorted pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry with the Schiff base coordinated to the tin(IV) ion as a dinegatively charged pentadentate chelating agent via the pyridine nitrogen atom, the two azomethine nitrogen atoms and the two thiolate sulfur atoms. The ligand occupies the equatorial plane and the iodo ligands are coordinated to the tin(IV) ion at axial positions. The distortion from an ideal pentagonal bipyramidal geometry is attributed to the restricted bite size of the pentadentate ligands. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Copper(II) bromide and chloride complexes of the new heptadentate ligand 2,6-bis(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino)methylpyridine (L) have been prepared. For the bromide complexes, chains of novel, approximately C-2-symmetric, chiral [Cu-2(L)Br-2](2+) 'wedge-shaped' tectons are found. The links between the dicopper tectons and the overall chirality and packing of the chains are dictated by the bromide ion content, not the counter anion. In contrast, the chloride complexes exhibit linked asymmetric [Cu-2(L)Cl-3](+) tectons with distinct N3CuCl2 and N4CuCl2 centres in the solid. The overall structures of the dicopper bromide and chloride units persist in solution irrespective of the halide. The redox chemistry of the various species is also described.

The syntheses of the hexadentate ligands 2,2,10,10-tetra(methyleneamine)-4,8-dithiaundecane (PrN(4)S(2)amp), 2,2,11,11-tetra(methyleneamine)-4,9-dithiadodecane (BuN(4)S(2)amp), and 1,2-bis(4,4-methyleneamine)-2-thiapentyl)benzene (XyN(4)S(2)amp) are reported and the complexes [Co(RN(4)S(2)amp)](3+) (R = Pr, Bu, Xy) characterised by single crystal X-ray study. The low-temperature (11 K) absorption spectra have been measured in Nafion films. From the observed positions of both spin-allowed (1)A(1g) --> T-1(1g) and (1)A(1g) --> T-1(2g) and spin forbidden (1)A(1g) --> T-3(1g) and (1)A(1g) --> T-3(2g) bands, octahedral ligand-field parameters (10D(q), B and C) have been determined. DFT calculations suggest that significant interaction between the d-d and CT excitations occurs for the complexes. The calculations offer an explanation for the observed deviations from linearity of the relationship between Co-59 magnetogyric ratio and beta(DeltaE)(-1) (beta = the nephelauxetic ratio; DeltaE the energy of the (1)A(1g) --> T-1(1g) transition) for a series of amine and mixed amine/thioether donor complexes.

The synthesis of the pentadentate ligand 2,6-bis(3,3-dimethyl-2,4-dioxocyclohexanyl)-4-thiaheptane (N(4)Samp) is described. The synthetic pathway involves the coupling of two 1,3-(dimethylenedioxy)-2-methyl-2-(methylene-p-toluenesulfonyl)propane moieties with sodium sulfide and subsequent synthetic elaboration to prepare the final N4S donor system. The cobalt(III) complex [Co(N(4)Samp)Cl](2+) has been prepared and subsequently crystallized as the tetrachlorozincate salt. The X-ray structure analysis confirms the pentadentate nature of the ligand and shows the thioether donor occupying one apex with four equivalent amine donors effectively occupying the equatorial plane of the molecule. The sixth coordination site is occupied by a chloro ligand. The electronic absorption and C-13 NMR spectra have been studied. DFT calculations have been employed to explore structural and mechanistic comparisons between [Co(N(4)Samp)Cl](2+) and an analogous pentaamine complex.

The 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde isonicotinoyl hydrazone (HPCIH) family of ligands are typically tridentate N,N,O chelators that exhibit very high in vitro activity in mobilizing intracellular Fe and are promising candidates for the treatment of Fe overload diseases. Complexation of ferrous perchlorate with HPCIH in MeCN solution gives the expected six-coordinate complex Fe-II(PCIH)(2). However, complexation of Fe-II with 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde picolinoyl hydrazone (HPCPH, an isomer of HPCIH) under the same conditions leads to spontaneous assembly of an unprecedented asymmetric, mixed-ligand dinuclear triple helical complex Fe-2(II)(PCPH)(2)(PPH), where PPH2- is the dianion of bis(picolinoyl) hydrazine. The X-ray crystal structure of this complex shows that each ligand binds simultaneously to both metal centres in a bidentate fashion. The dinuclear complex exhibits two well separated and totally reversible Fe-III/II redox couples as shown by cyclic voltammetry in MeCN solution.

The crystal structure of the Cu(II) perchlorate complex of a functionalised bis(rnacrocycle) ligand, where the individual macrocycle units are of the cyclam type and adopt the trans-III configuration, is analysed in terms of its possible relationship to those of bis(macrocycle) complexes possessing anti-viral activity. Significant new insights into the interactions of the potent insulin-enhancing compound bis(maltolato)oxovanadium(IV) (BMOV) with the serum proteins, apo-transferrin and albumin, are presented. Identical reaction products are observed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) with either BMOV or vanadyl sulfate (VOSO4) in solutions of human serum apo-transferrin. Further detailed study rules out the presence of a ternary ligand-vanadyl-transferrin complex proposed previously. By contrast, differences in reaction products are observed for the interactions of BMOV and VOSO4 with human serum albumin (HSA), wherein adduct formation between albumin and BMOV is detected. In BMOV-albumin solutions, vanadyl ions are bound in a unique manner not observed in comparable solutions Of VOSO4 and albumin. Presentation of chelated vanadyl ions precludes binding at the numerous nonspecific sites and produces a unique EPR spectrum which is assigned to a BMOV-HSA adduct. The adduct species cannot be produced, however, from a solution Of VOSO4 and HSA titrated with maltol. Addition of maltol to a VOSO4-HSA solution instead results in formation of a different end product which has been assigned as a ternary complex, VO(ma)(HSA). Furthermore, analysis of solution equilibria using a model system of BMOV with 1-methylimidazole (formation constant log K = 4.5(1), by difference electronic absorption spectroscopy) lends support to an adduct binding mode (VO(ma)(2)-HSA) proposed herein for BMOV and HSA. This detailed report of an in vitro reactivity difference between VOSO4 and BMOV may have bearing on the form of active vanadium metabolites delivered to target tissues. Albumin binding of vanadium chelates is seen to have a potentially dramatic effect on pharmacokinetics, transport, and efficacy of these antidiabetic chelates.
