Background: Previous studies of stability and relapse after orthodontic treatment report short-term stability is generally followed by slow relapse to the original condition. What these studies do not report is whether this relapse is continuous or interspersed with periods of improvement or stability. Methods: A subjective 0-10 index of malocclusion was used to record post-treatment stability and relapse over 10 to 12 years following fixed appliance orthodontic treatment of 24 patients. The severity scores were plotted on timelines. Results: Episodes of change, both favourable and unfavourable, were interspersed with episodes of stability. Conclusions: Changes in the first 3 and 12 months post-treatment are indicative of the 10 to 12 years post-treatment outcomes. This index may provide a useful instrument to analyze patients and/or their study models longitudinally.

Abscisic acid (ABA) supplied in the vase solution can induce stomatal closure in the leaves of cut flowers, including roses (Rosa hybrida L.). This effect may be beneficial in reducing water deficit stress. Extracellular pH can affect active ABA concentrations in the apoplast of guard cells, with sap alkalisation enhancing the physiological activity of ABA. Accordingly, it was hypothesized that vase solution pH may affect ABA-mediated stomatal closure of cut roses. Two experiments were conducted to study the interaction of vase solution pH and ABA. In the first, cut 'Baccara' roses were held in vase solutions with +/- 10(-5) M ABA at pH 6, pH 7 and pH 8. In the second experiment, roses were held with +/- 10(-5) M ABA at pH 6 and pH 8 in the presence and absence of 1 mg l(-1) AgNO3 as a bactericide. Supply of ABA increased vase life and reduced vase solution usage of flowers held in low pH 6 solutions, indicating induction of stomatal closure. Conversely, ABA supplied at pH 8 was associated with reduced vase life. This negative result was associated with enhanced development of vase solution microbes at high pH, which overrode any potential pH-mediated ABA efficacy effects.

BACKGROUND: Most patients and their parents experience difficulty in fully appreciating the implications and demands of orthodontic treatment. This is largely because of inadequate understanding of the process of treatment or the commitment required. OBJECTIVES: To determine if a specifically developed video information package could significantly increase patient awareness of the implications of a full course of orthodontic treatment. Changes in attitude to orthodontic treatment after viewing the package were also measured. METHODS: Year 7 (12 year-old) students in two primary schools in the City of Gold Coast, Australia were randomly allocated to either a study group or a control group. Knowledge of and attitude to orthodontic treatment were measured with self-administered questionnaires before and after viewing the information package. RESULTS: The intervention group showed a 15 per cent gain in knowledge (p < 0.001). There was no gain in knowledge for the 45 students in the control group. There was no measured change in perception of need for orthodontic treatment in the study group. There was, however, an increase in potential compliance and positive attitude to the appearance of orthodontic appliances. There was a small increase in willingness to undertake treatment, but this was not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: The information package developed for this study increased awareness of the implications and practical difficulties which may be encountered during a course of orthodontic treatment, and produced some changes in attitude to treatment.

Indomethacin (IND) is the drug of choice for the closure of a patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in neonates. This paper describes a simple, sensitive, accurate and precise microscale HPLC method suitable for the analysis of IND in plasma of premature neonates. Samples were prepared by plasma protein precipitation with acetonitrile containing the methyl ester of IND as the internal standard (IS). Chromatography was performed on a Hypersil C-18 column. The mobile phase of methanol, water and orthophosphoric acid (70:29.5:0.5, v/v, respectively), was delivered at 1.5 mL/min and monitored at 270 nm. IND and the IS were eluted at 2.9 and 4.3 min, respectively. Calibrations were linear (r > 0.999) from 25 to 2500 mu g/L. The inter- and intra-day assay imprecision was less than 4.3% at 400-2000 mu g/L, and less than 22.1% at 35 mu g/L. Inaccuracy ranged from -6.0% to +1.0% from 35 to 2000 mu g/L. The absolute recovery of IND over this range was 93.0-113.3%. The IS was stable for at least 36 h when added to plasma at ambient temperature. This method is suitable for pharmacokinetic studies of IND and has potential for monitoring therapy in infants with PDA when a target therapeutic range for IND has been validated. An appreciation of the physical mechanisms which cause observed seismicity complexity is fundamental to the understanding of the temporal behaviour of faults and single slip events. Numerical simulation of fault slip can provide insights into fault processes by allowing exploration of parameter spaces which influence microscopic and macroscopic physics of processes which may lead towards an answer to those questions. Particle-based models such as the Lattice Solid Model have been used previously for the simulation of stick-slip dynamics of faults, although mainly in two dimensions. Recent increases in the power of computers and the ability to use the power of parallel computer systems have made it possible to extend particle-based fault simulations to three dimensions. In this paper a particle-based numerical model of a rough planar fault embedded between two elastic blocks in three dimensions is presented. A very simple friction law without any rate dependency and no spatial heterogeneity in the intrinsic coefficient of friction is used in the model. To simulate earthquake dynamics the model is sheared in a direction parallel to the fault plane with a constant velocity at the driving edges. Spontaneous slip occurs on the fault when the shear stress is large enough to overcome the frictional forces on the fault. Slip events with a wide range of event sizes are observed. Investigation of the temporal evolution and spatial distribution of slip during each event shows a high degree of variability between the events. In some of the larger events highly complex slip patterns are observed.

This study presents the first attempt to constrain the evolution of the North Anatolian Fault Zone (NAFZ) by age dating and isotope tracing of clay minerals formed during near-surface faulting. Extensive illitic clay mineralisation occurred along the NAFZ related to hydrothermal alteration of the fault gouges and pseudotachylytes. Samples representing the pre-fault protoliths outside the fault zone do not contain authigenic illitic clay minerals indicating that hydrothermal processes were confined to the areas within the fault zone. K-Ar age data indicate that the hydrothermal system and the associated illite authigenesis initiated at similar to 57 Ma. This process is interpreted to reflect the onset of significant strike-slip or transtensional faulting immediately after the continental collision related to the closure of the Neotethys Ocean. Following the initiation of the fault movements in the latest Paleocene-Early Eocene, displacements along the NAFZ have continued, with probably intensified fault activities at similar to 26 Ma and later than similar to 8 Ma. Oxygen isotope compositions of the illitic clays from different locations along the NAFZ are similar, with narrow ranges in delta O-18 values indicating clay precipitation from fluids with similar oxygen isotope compositions and crystallisation temperatures. The delta O-18 and delta D values of the calculated fluid isotopic composition (delta O-18=5.9 parts per thousand to 11.2 parts per thousand, delta D=-59 parts per thousand to -73 parts per thousand) are consistent with metamorphic and magmatic origin of fluids mobilised during active tectonism. The interpretation of the fluid flow history of the NAFZ is in agreement with that reported previously for some well-known large-scale high-angle fault zones, which similarly developed along collisional-type orogenic belts and are commonly associated with significant mesothermal ore mineralisation. Load-induced extravascular fluid flow has been postulated to play a role in mechanotransduction of physiological loads at the cellular level. Furthermore, the displaced fluid serves as a carrier for metabolites, nutrients, mineral precursors and osteotropic agents important for cellular activity. We hypothesise that load-induced fluid flow enhances the transport of these key substances, thus helping to regulate cellular activity associated with processes of functional adaptation and remodelling. To test this hypothesis, molecular tracer methods developed previously by our group were applied in vivo to observe and quantify the effects of load-induced fluid flow under four-point-bending loads. Preterminal tracer transport studies were carried out on 24 skeletally mature Sprague Dawley rats. Mechanical loading enhanced the transport of both small- and larger-molecular-mass tracers within the bony tissue of the tibial mid-diaphysis. Mechanical loading showed a highly significant effect on the number of periosteocytic spaces exhibiting tracer within the cross section of each bone. For all loading rates studied, the concentration of Procion Red tracer was consistently higher in the tibia subjected to pure bending loads than in the unloaded, contralateral tibia, Furthermore, the enhancement of transport was highly site-specific. In bones subjected to pure bending loads, a greater number of periosteocytic spaces exhibited the presence of tracer in the tension band of the cross section than in the compression band; this may reflect the higher strains induced in the tension band compared with the compression band within the mid-diaphysis of the rat tibia. Regardless of loading mode, the mean difference between the loaded side and the unloaded contralateral control side decreased with increasing loading frequency. Whether this reflects the length of exposure to the tracer or specific frequency effects cannot be determined by this set of experiments. These in vivo experimental results corroborate those of previous ex vivo and in vitro studies, Strain-related differences in tracer distribution provide support for the hypothesis that load-induced fluid flow plays a regulatory role in processes associated with functional adaptation.

Knowledge of the plan competes with self-consciousness of experience. The less we are able to understand our spatio-visual experience by the abstract coordinates of the plan, the more we are thrust back into a lived experience of the building in duration. This formula, frequently unacknowledged, has been one of the main precepts of the experientialist modernism which arises out of the picturesque and which stands in critique of classical idealism. One of the paths to critique this formula is by showing that the attention to the experience of the spaces in duration is predicated on obscuring, complicating and weakening the apprehension of the plan as a figure. Another development in the practice of modern planning has been architects using a kind of over-drawing where human circulation diagrams or 'movement lines' are drawn expressively across the orthographic plane; thus representing the lived experience of buildings. We will show that these two issues are linked; the plan's weak figure and the privilege this supposes for durational experience has a corollary - experience itself demands to be visible in the plan, and this is one origin of the present fascination with 'diagramming'. In this paper we explore the practice of architectural planning and its theoretical underpinnings in an attempt to show the viability of a history of architectural planning methods.
