There is emerging evidence to support the effectiveness of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for older adults. However, there are a number of clinical difficulties that practitioners often encounter when using homework assignments with the older adult population. In this article, we provide a brief summary of the research findings on homework in CBT, review common obstacles to the use of homework, and provide concrete suggestions for the adaptation of homework assignments to increase their potential effectiveness with older adults. We also describe several types of homework assignments that may be most helpful, augmenting these suggestions with clinical examples.

An assumption of theory-based physical activity interventions is that active participation positively affects the theoretical constructs upon which the intervention is based. This assumption is rarely tested. This study assessed whether participation, defined as completion of homework, in a lifestyle physical activity intervention was associated with changes over 6 months in constructs the homework addressed: the behavioral and cognitive processes of change, self-efficacy, and decisional balance (the pros and cons). Participants were 244 sedentary adults aged 25 to 75 years. They completed an average of 12 of 20 homework assignments. Those completing at least two-thirds of the homework (n = 113) had greater changes in the theoretical constructs from pretest to posttest than those completing less (n = 90). Post-hoc analyses suggest that completing theory-based homework may impact the processes of change and self-efficacy in lifestyle physical activity interventions and, therefore, are warranted in future interventions.

2D-NMR spectroscopic data is reported for the haliclonacyclamines A - D (1)-(4) and for two bismethiodide adducts (5) and (6). The structures of two new alkaloids, haliclonacyclamines C (3) and D (4), which are the 15,16-dihydro analogues of the haliclonacyclamines A (1) and B (2) are described. Revised assignments deduced by 2D-INADEQUATE spectroscopy are presented for (1) and (2). The alkene substituent in the C,, spacer group of (2) and (4) is positioned between C27-C28 by NMR, and confirmed by x-ray structural analysis for (2). Metabolite (3) has a C25-C26 double bond. Cafarella has written what amounts to a wake-up call for many journalism educators. Her paper will have varying degrees of relevance for different educators and different institutions. In some instances, she may well be reflecting the viewpoints of particular educators in particular situations but these same educators, because of institutional pressures and the very pressures of time and limited resources that Cafarella discusses in a suburban newspaper setting, are unable to implement their heart’s desire. For example, they may want to do all the things Cafarella cited, but to meet the academic requirements of their institution as opposed to the training needs of their students they must achieve a balance between the practical and the theoretical, between their own teaching and research performance, and they must be able to cope with the marking load they generate by creating endless practical assignments. Shorthand bobs up in Cafarella’s paper as a hurdle the graduate cadet must clear before being elevated to the status of graded journalist after the one-year cadetship, and I am reminded that arguments about the inclusion of shorthand in tertiary journalism courses has been debated at national and institutional levels for the past quarter of a century. In fact, shorthand is a kind of shorthand for this practice versus theory debate.

A course which has a large student enrolment consequently puts a heavy load on instructors both in the presentation and the assessment areas. In the School of Economics at the University of Queensland, this is the case for the quantitative analysis subjects. Assessment for many years has been through mid-semester and end of semester exams, as well as Computer Managed Learning (CML) assignments. In 2000 it was decided to incorporate a system of flexible assessment where neither the CML nor the mid-semester exam was compulsory. The outcomes are assessed and the advantages and disadvantages discussed.

The ESR spectra of poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene) were recorded following gamma-radiolysis under vacuum at room temperature and 77 K. The very broad spectrum at 77 K revealed little fine structure with which to identity the radicals formed upon irradiation, but subsequent photobleaching and annealing studies, together with radiolytic studies at higher temperatures, afforded scope for making radical assignments. Both main-chain radicals and a range of chain-end radicals have been identified. The G-values for radical formation were 1.55, 0.36 and 0.32 at 77 K, 273 K and room temperature, respectively. The cell cycle is one of the most fundamental processes within a cell. Phase-dependent expression and cell-cycle checkpoints require a high level of control. A large number of genes with varying functions and modes of action are responsible for this biology. In a targeted exploration of the FANTOM2-Variable Protein Set, a number of mouse homologs to known cell-cycle regulators as well as novel members of cell-cycle families were identified. Focusing on two prototype cell-cycle families, the cyclins and the NIMA-related kinases (NEKs), we believe we have identified all of the mouse members of these families, 24 cyclins and 10 NEKs, and mapped them to ENSEMBL transcripts. To attempt to globally identify all potential cell cycle-related genes within mouse, the MGI (Mouse Genome Database) assignments for the RIKEN Representative Set (RPS) and the results from two homology-based queries were merged. We identified 1415 genes with possible cell-cycle roles, and 1758 potential paralogs. We comment on the genes identified in this screen and evaluate the merits of each approach.

Manual curation has long been held to be the gold standard for functional annotation of DNA sequence. Our experience with the annotation of more than 20,000 full-length cDNA sequences revealed problems with this approach, including inaccurate and inconsistent assignment of gene names, as well as many good assignments that were difficult to reproduce using only computational methods. For the FANTOM2 annotation of more than 60,000 cDNA clones, we developed a number of methods and tools to circumvent some of these problems, including an automated annotation pipeline that provides high-quality preliminary annotation for each sequence by introducing an uninformative filter that eliminates uninformative annotations, controlled vocabularies to accurately reflect both the functional assignments and the evidence supporting them, and a highly refined, Web-based manual annotation tool that allows users to view a wide array of sequence analyses and to assign gene names and putative functions using a consistent nomenclature. The ultimate utility of our approach is reflected in the low rate of reassignment of automated assignments by manual curation. Based on these results, we propose a new standard for large-scale annotation, in which the initial automated annotations are manually investigated and then computational methods are iteratively modified and improved based on the results of manual curation.

Students in a physical sciences course were introduced to cooperative learning at the University of Queensland, Gatton Campus. Groups of four to five students worked together in tutorial and practical sessions. Mid-term and practical examinations were abolished and 40% of total marks were allocated to the cooperative learning activities. A peer- and self-assessment system was successfully adapted to account for individual performance in cooperative learning group assignments. The results suggest that cooperative learning was very well received by students, and they expressed willingness to join cooperative learning groups in other courses. In addition, cooperative learning offered many benefits to students in terms of graduate attributes such as teamwork, communication, lifelong learning and problem-solving.

Background: The Functional Capacity Index (FCI) was designed to predict physical function 12 months after injury. We report a validation study of the FCI. Methods: This was a consecutive case series registered in the Queensland Trauma Registry who consented to the prospective 12-month telephone-administered follow-up study. FCI scores measured at 12 months were compared with those originally predicted. Results: Complete Abbreviated Injury Scale score information was available for 617 individuals, of whom 587 (95%) could be assigned at least one FCI score (range, 1-17). Agreement between the largest predicted FCI and observed FCI score was poor (kappa = 0.05; 95% confidence interval, 0.00-0.10) and explained only 1% of the variability in observed FCI. Using an encompassing model that included all FCI assignments, agreement remained poor (kappa = 0.05; 95% confidence interval, -0.02-0.12), and the model explained only 9% of the variability in observed FCI. Conclusion: The predicted functional capacity poorly agrees with actual functional outcomes. Further research should consider including other (noninjury) explanatory factors in predicting FCI at 12 months.
