The List of Social Situation Problems: Reliability and validity in an adolescent Spanish-speaking sample

The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Spanish translation of the List of Social Situation Problems (LSSP; S. H. Spence, 1980). The questionnaire was administered to a sample of 388 adolescents between the ages of 12 and 18. Exploratory factor analysis identified four factors: Social Anxiety, Adult Oppositional, Assertiveness, and Making Friends, which accounted for 26.64% of the variance. Internal consistency of the total scale was high (alpha = .86). Correlations between the LSSP and two self-report measures of social anxiety, the Questionnaire about Interpersonal Difficulties for Adolescents (r = .45) and the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory (r = .48), were statistically significant. A significant difference was found between LSSP total scores for adolescents with and without social anxiety (d = 1.14), supporting the construct validity of the scale.

The pathogenesis of migraine - 17th to early 20th Century understandings

The modern understanding of the pathogenesis of migraine, based on the concept that it is a neurovascular disorder, is often thought to have emerged from the work of Harold Wolff in the period 1932-1962. However, over the preceding 300 years, from William Harvey onwards, various hypotheses of the pathogenesis of migraine had been proposed, a few bearing reasonably strong resemblances to Wolff's ideas, though based on less adequate evidence. Many of these earlier hypotheses regarded migraine either primarily as a vascular (e.g., Willis, Wepfer, Latham) or as a neural disorder (e.g., Harvey, Lieving and his 'nerve storms'). There were also variations around these two major themes and in the 19th Century a number of neurovascufar type hypotheses emerged assigning a major role in migraine pathogenesis to the autonomic nervous system. In addition, during the three centuries there were a number of other hypotheses based on different postulated pathogenic mechanisms, some quite ingenious, which had relatively brief vogues. Stock structure of Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson along the Australian east coast deduced from parasite data

The parasite fauna of Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson from three regions off eastern Australia was examined for evidence of separate stocks. The abundance of five metacestodes was very similar in all areas suggesting that extensive mixing of the fish occurs along the coast, unlike the Situation across northern Australia where large differences have been found between regions. The similarity in abundances of two metacestodes from Townsville fish and south-east Queensland fish Suggests that these two regions have fish with very similar histories. The data lead to the conclusion that the seasonal fishery for Spanish mackerel off south-east Queensland is based on a random group of fish from the same origin as fish sampled off Townsville and is not a subpopulation that moves south each year.
