This paper presents a critical analysis of the Bachelor of Materials Engineering programme compared with the expectations of the Institution of Engineers Australia (IEAust) and of UQ. To set the scene, the graduate attributes are listed, the programme framework is presented and the educational culture and available facilities are described Then, the programme delivery is described; this includes an analysis of the learning opportunities that allow students to develop the graduate attributes. Finally, an assessment is made of programme outcomes relating to graduate attributes.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate that the apparent controversy between the infinitesimal deformation (ID) approach and the phenomenological theory of martensitic transformations (PTMTs) in predicting the crystallographic characteristics of a martensitic transformation is entirely based on unjustified approximations associated with the way in which the ID calculations are performed. When applied correctly, the ID approach is shown to be absolutely identical to the PTMT. Nevertheless, there may be some advantages in using the ID approach. In particular, it is somewhat simpler than the PTMT; it is based on a physical concept that is easier to understand and, most important, it may provide a tool for investigating some of the features of martensitic transformations that have eluded explanation via the PTMT.

Stress corrosion cracks (SCC) had been found in a natural gas transmission pipeline during a dig-up and inspection program. The question was raised as to whether the SCC was active or dormant. This paper describes the resultant investigation to determine if a particular service crack was actively growing. The strategy adopted was to assess the appearance of the fracture surface of the service crack and to compare with expectations from laboratory specimens with active SCC. The conclusions from this study are as follows. To judge whether a crack in the service pipe is active or dormant, it is reasonable to compare the very crack tip of the service crack and a fresh crack in a laboratory sample. If the crack tip of the active laboratory sample is similar to that of the service pipe, it means the crack in the service pipe is likely to be active. From the comparison of the crack tip between the service pipe and the laboratory samples, it appears likely that the cracks in the samples extracted from service were most likely to have been active intergranular stress corrosion cracks. This paper presents results on the preparation of microcapsules containing liquid organosilica, and their co-deposition with copper in an acidic copper electrolyte onto a carbon steel cathode to form a copper/microcapsule composite coating. Microscopic analyses of the surface and the cross-section of the coating confirm the incorporation of the liquid-containing microcapsules in the coating layer. The influence of microcapsules in the electrolyte on the cathode polarization, as well as that of process conditions on the microcapsule inclusion, is also discussed. A transpassivation model was proposed for Fe–Cr–Ni stainless steels. In this model, the important steps and processes involved in transpassivation were illustrated. With some reasonable assumptions, transpassivation behaviours were predicted, such as the changes in film composition, film thickness, anodic current density and AC impedance spectrum in transpassive and secondary passive regions. It was demonstrated that these theoretical predictions were in good agreement with experimentally observed transpassivity of Fe–Cr–Ni stainless steels.

Basic aluminium sulphate and nitrate crystals were prepared by forced hydrolysis of aluminium salt solution followed by precipitation with a sulphate solution or by evaporation for the basic aluminium nitrate. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the chemical composition determined by ICP-AES in earlier work. High resolution XPS scans of the individual elements allow the identification of both the central (AlO4)-Al-IV group and the 12 aluminium octahedra in the [IVAlO4AlVI(OH)(24)(H2O)(12)] building unit by two Al 2p transitions with binding energies of 73.7 and 74.2 eV in both the basic aluminium sulphate and nitrate. Four different types of oxygen atoms were identified in the basic aluminium sulphate associated with the central AlO4, OH, H2O and SO4 groups in the crystal structure with transitions at 529.4, 530.1, 530.7 and 531.8 eV, respectively. We prove that a pure entangled state of two subsystems with equal spin is equivalent to a two-mode spin-squeezed state under local operations except for a set of bipartite states with measure zero, and provide a counterexample to the generalization of this result to two subsystems of unequal spin.
