Potential errors in the application of mixture theory to the analysis of multiple-frequency bioelectrical impedance data for the determination of body fluid volumes are assessed. Potential sources of error include: conductive length; tissue fluid resistivity; body density; weight and technical errors of measurement. Inclusion of inaccurate estimates of body density and weight introduce errors of typically < +/-3% but incorrect assumptions regarding conductive length or fluid resistivities may each incur errors of up to 20%.

Hydroperoxide derivatives of beta-oxa-substituted polyunsaturated fatty acids were prepared by 15-lipoxygenase catalysed oxidation and perketal derivatives of fatty acid hydroperoxides were synthesized. The perketals are more stable than their parent fatty acid hydroperoxides, but less active as antimalarial agents in the in vitro growth inhibition of Plasmodium falciparum. The low temperature electronic spectrum of Cu(II) doped Cs2ZrCl6 is reported. It is found that Cu(II) is incorporated as the square planar copper tetrachloride ion, CuCl42-, which substitutes at the Zr(IV) site in the Cs2ZrCl6 lattice. There is a complete absence of axial coordination. The optical spectrum shows vibronic structure with peak widths as small as 8 cm(-1), far narrower than previously seen for this ion. The energy of the observed transitions and the Franck-Condon intensity pattern suggest that there is a substantial relaxation of the host lattice about the impurity ion. The relative intensity of the magnetic dipole component of the bands appears to be considerably greater than for pure copper(II) compounds containing the CuCl42- ion. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. We present models for the optical functions of 11 metals used as mirrors and contacts in optoelectronic and optical devices: noble metals (Ag, Au, Cu), aluminum, beryllium, and transition metals (Cr, Ni, Pd, Pt, Ti, W). We used two simple phenomenological models, the Lorentz-Drude (LD) and the Brendel-Bormann (BB), to interpret both the free-electron and the interband parts of the dielectric response of metals in a wide spectral range from 0.1 to 6 eV. Our results show that the BE model was needed to describe appropriately the interband absorption in noble metals, while for Al, Be, and the transition metals both models exhibit good agreement with the experimental data. A comparison with measurements on surface normal structures confirmed that the reflectance and the phase change on reflection from semiconductor-metal interfaces (including the case of metallic multilayers) can be accurately described by use of the proposed models for the optical functions of metallic films and the matrix method for multilayer calculations. The macrocyclic compounds (6-(4',6'-diamino-1',3',5'-triazinyl)-1,4,6,8,11-pentaazacyclotetradecane)copper(II) triperchlorate dihydrate, [Cu(HL2)](ClO4)(3). 2H(2)O, (6-(6'-amino-4'-oxo-1'H-1',3',5'-triazinyl)-1,4,6,8,11-pentaazacyclotetradecane)copper(II) diperchlorate hydrate, [CuL3](ClO4)(2). H2O, and [(6-(4',6'-dioxo-1'H-1',3',5'-triazinyl) 1,4,6,8,11-pentaazacyclotetradecane)copper(II)] diperchlorate, [CuL4](ClO4)(2), have been synthesized. The macrocycles synthesized contain respectively pendant melamine, ammeline,and ammelide rings. The X-ray cyrstallographic analyses of [Cu(HL2)](ClO4)(3). 2H(2)O, triclinic, space group P (1) over bar, a = 9.489(10) Angstrom, b = 12.340(2) Angstrom, c = 24.496(4) Angstrom, alpha = 87.74(10)degrees beta = 85.51(10)degrees gamma = 70.95(10)degrees and Z = 4, and {[CuL3](ClO4)(2). H2O}2, monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 18.624(8) Angstrom, b = 17.160(2) Angstrom, c = 15.998(6) Angstrom, beta = 117.82(2)degrees, and Z = 4, are reported. The structure of [Cu(HL2)](ClO4)(3). 2H(2)O shows the formation of linear tapes, formed by a combination of hydrogen bonds and pi-pi stacking interactions. The structure of [CuL3](ClO4)(2). H2O displays formation of dimers, formed by a coordinate bond from the oxygen in one molecule to the copper atom of another. The tautomeric forms of the ammeline and ammelide moieties have been determined. The potential of these compounds as subunits for cocrystallization has been investigated.

Extended gcd calculation has a long history and plays an important role in computational number theory and linear algebra. Recent results have shown that finding optimal multipliers in extended gcd calculations is difficult. We present an algorithm which uses lattice basis reduction to produce small integer multipliers x(1), ..., x(m) for the equation s = gcd (s(1), ..., s(m)) = x(1)s(1) + ... + x(m)s(m), where s1, ... , s(m) are given integers. The method generalises to produce small unimodular transformation matrices for computing the Hermite normal form of an integer matrix.

The use of aspirin as an anti-platelet drug is limited by its propensity to induce gastric injury and by its adverse effect on vascular prostacyclin formation. Two phenolic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (salicyclic acid and diflunisal) were modified by esterification with a series of O-acyl moieties. The short-term ulcerogenic in vitro and in vivo anti-platelet properties, pharmacodynamic profiles, and extent of hepatic extraction of these phenolic esters were compared with aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid). The more lipophilic esters (longer carbon chain length in O-acyl group) show significantly less gastrotoxicity in stressed rats than does aspirin after a single oral dose. The in vitro and in vivo anti-platelet studies show that these phenolic esters inhibited (1) arachidonate-triggered human platelet aggregation and (2) thrombin-stimulated rat serum thromboxane Ag production by platelets in the clotting process almost as effectively as aspirin. The hepatic extractions of these O-acyl derivatives are significantly higher than those of aspirin. The pharmacodynamic studies show that these O-acyl derivatives of salicylic acid and diflunisal probably bind to, or combine with, the same site on the platelet cyclooxygenase as aspirin. Replacing the O-acetyl group with longer chain O-acyl moiety in this series of phenolic esters markedly reduced the potential of these agents to induce short-term gastric injury but did not lessen their activity as inhibitors of platelet aggregation. These non-acetyl salicylates may therefore represent a novel class of anti-platelet drugs with less ulcerogenic potential.

An extension of the Adachi model with the adjustable broadening function, instead of the Lorentzian one, is employed to model the optical constants of GaP, InP, and InAs. Adjustable broadening is modeled by replacing the damping constant with the frequency-dependent expression. The improved flexibility of the model enables achieving an excellent agreement with the experimental data. The relative rms errors obtained for the refractive index equal 1.2% for GaP, 1.0% for InP, and 1.6% for InAs. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0021-8979(99)05807-7].

We consider the effect of quantum spin fluctuations on the ground-state properties of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an anisotropic triangular lattice using linear spin-wave (LSW) theory. This model should describe the magnetic properties of the insulating phase of the kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)X family of superconducting molecular crystals. The ground-state energy, the staggered magnetization, magnon excitation spectra, and spin-wave velocities are computed as functions of the ratio of the antiferromagnetic exchange between the second and first neighbours, J(2)/J(1). We find that near J(2)/J(1) = 0.5, i.e., in the region where the classical spin configuration changes from a Neel-ordered phase to a spiral phase, the staggered magnetization vanishes, suggesting the possibility of a quantum disordered state. in this region, the quantum correction to the magnetization is large but finite. This is in contrast to the case for the frustrated Heisenberg model on a square lattice, for which the quantum correction diverges logarithmically at the transition from the Neel to the collinear phase. For large J(2)/J(1), the model becomes a set of chains with frustrated interchain coupling. For J(2) > 4J(1), the quantum correction to the magnetization, within LSW theory, becomes comparable to the classical magnetization, suggesting the possibility of a quantum disordered state. We show that, in this regime, the quantum fluctuations are much larger than for a set of weakly coupled chains with non-frustrated interchain coupling.

We consider two different kinds of fluctuations in an ion trap potential: external fluctuating electrical fields, which cause statistical movement (wobbling) of the ion relative to the center of the trap, and fluctuations of the spring constant, which an due to fluctuations of the ac component of the potential applied in the Paul trap for ions. We write down master equations for both cases and, averaging out the noise, obtain expressions for the heating of the ion. We compare our results to previous results for far-off resonance optical traps and heating in ion traps. The effect of fluctuating external electrical fields for a quantum gate operation (controlled-NOT) is determined and the fidelity for that operation derived. [S1050-2947(99)06005-9].

We study the spin-1/2 Heisenberg models on an anisotropic two-dimensional lattice which interpolates between the square lattice at one end, a set of decoupled spin chains on the other end, and the triangular-lattice Heisenberg model in between. By series expansions around two different dimer ground states and around various commensurate and incommensurate magnetically ordered states, we establish the phase diagram for this model of a frustrated antiferromagnet. We find a particularly rich phase diagram due to the interplay of magnetic frustration, quantum fluctuations, and varying dimensionality. There is a large region of the usual two-sublattice Neel phase, a three-sublattice phase for the triangular-lattice model, a region of incommensurate magnetic order around the triangular-lattice model, and regions in parameter space where there is no magnetic order. We find that the incommensurate ordering wave vector is in general altered from its classical value by quantum fluctuations. The extension of Adachi's model with a Gaussian-like broadening function, in place of Lorentzian, is used to model the optical dielectric function of the alloy AlxGa1-xAs. Gaussian-like broadening is accomplished by replacing the damping constant in the Lorentzian line shape with a frequency dependent expression. In this way, the comparative simplicity of the analytic formulas of the model is preserved, while the accuracy becomes comparable to that of more intricate models, and/or models with significantly more parameters. The employed model accurately describes the optical dielectric function in the spectral range from 1.5 to 6.0 eV within the entire alloy composition range. The co-evolution of papillomaviruses (PV) and their mammalian hosts has produced mechanisms by which PV might avoid specific and non-specific host immune responses. Low level expression of PV proteins in infected basal epithelial cells, together with an absence of inflammation and of virus-induced cell lysis, restricts the opportunity for effective PV protein presentation to immunocytes by dendritic cells. Additionally, PV early proteins, by a range of mechanisms, may restrict the efficacy of antigen presentation by these cells. Should an immune response be induced to PV antigens, resting keratinocytes (KC) appear resistant to interferon-gamma-enhanced mechanisms of cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL)-mediated lysis, and expression of PV antigens by resting KC can tolerise PV-specific CTL. Thus, KC, in the absence of inflammation, may represent an immunologically privileged site for PV infection. Together, these mechanisms play a parr in allowing persistence of PV-induced proliferative skin lesions for months to years, even in immunocompetent hosts.
