The relationship between the ordering characteristic of the pyrochlore structure type and that characteristic of the defect fluorite structure type (immediately on either side of two phase regions separating the two structure types) in a range of rare eath sesquioxide stabilized cubic zirconias is investigated via electron diffraction and imaging. Systematic structural change as a function of composition and relative size of the constituent metal ions is highlighted and a multi-q to single-q = 1/2 [111]* model proposed for the observed pyrochlore to defect fluorite phase transition. Strain introduced into the close-packed {111} metal ion planes of the defect fluorite average structure by the local cation and oxygen vacancy distribution is pointed to as the likely origin of the observed behavior. The relations among adult attachment style, coping resources, appraised strain, and coping strategies were examined in a prospective study of married couples having their first child (N = 92). Attachment and coping resources were measured during the second trimester of pregnancy, and parenting strain and coping strategies were assessed when the babies were about 6 weeks old. Results supported a theoretical model proposing that attachment is predictive of coping resources and appraised strain, and that attachment, resources, and strain are predictive of coping strategies. Results also highlighted the complexity of associations among attachment, stress, and coping: Gender differences in mean scores and predictive associations were obtained, and some interactions were found between resources and strain in predicting coping strategies. The findings support the utility of integrating theories of attachment and coping in explaining couples' adjustment to important developmental transitions.

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to study the glass transition in 10 Australian honeys by scanning at 10 degrees Cmin(-1) from -130 to 50 degreesC after annealing at -50 degreesC. The honeys had moisture contents 14.9 to 18.0%, seven were from Eucalyptus species. The glass transition temperatures (T-g) ranged from -46 degrees to -38 degreesC and were significantly (p

We study, with exact diagonalization, the zero temperature properties of the quarter-filled extended Hubbard model on a square lattice. We find that increasing the ratio of the intersite Coulomb repulsion, V, to the bandwidth drives the system from a metal to a charge ordered insulator. The evolution of the optical conductivity spectrum with increasing V is in agreement with the observed optical conductivity of several layered molecular crystals with the theta and beta crystal structures.

The cyano-bridged complexes cis-[L14CoIIINCFeII(CN)5]– and cis-[L14CoIIINCFeIII(CN)5] (L14= 6-methyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecan-6-amine) are prepared and characterised spectroscopically, electrochemically and structurally: Na{cis-[L14CoIIINCFeII(CN)5]}·9H2O, monoclinic space group P21/c, a= 14.758(3), b= 10.496(1), c= 19.359(3) , = 92.00(2)°, Z= 4; cis-[L14CoIIINCFeIII(CN)5]·4H2O, orthorhombic space group P212121, a= 9.492(1), b= 14.709(2), c= 18.760(3) , Z= 4. In both complexes, the pendant amine is cis to the bridging cyanide ligand. An analysis of the metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) transition in these systems with Hush theory has been carried out. This has revealed that the change in the configuration of the macrocycle both decreases the redox isomer energy difference (E1/2) and increases the reorganisational energy () of the cis-[L14CoIIINCFeII(CN)5]– complex with respect to the trans-[L14CoIIINCFeII(CN)5]– complex, the result being that both isomers display an MMCT transition of similar energy. The variation in redox isomer energy differences of the configurational isomers has been related to strain energy differences by molecular mechanics analysis of the [CoL14Cl]2+/+ precursor complexes.

Experiments to investigate the transition process in hypervelocity boundary layers were performed in the T4 free-piston shock tunnel. An array of thin-film heat-transfer gauges was used to detect the location and extent of the transitional region on a 1500 mm long x 120 turn wide flat plate, which formed one of the walls of a duct. The experiments were performed in a Mach 6 flow of air with 6- and 12-MJ/kg nozzle-supply enthalpies at unit Reynolds numbers ranging from 1.6 x 10(6) to 4.9 x 10(6) m(-1). The results show that the characteristics typical of transition taking place through the initiation, growth, and merger of turbulent spots are evident in the heat-transfer signals. A 2-mm-high excrescence located 440 turn from the leading edge was found to be capable of generating a turbulent wedge within an otherwise laminar boundary layer at a unit Reynolds number of 2.6 x 10(6) m(-1) at the 6-MJ/kg condition. A tripping strip, located 100 mm from the leading edge and consisting of a line 37 teeth of 2 rum height equally spaced and spanning the test surface, was also found to be capable of advancing the transition location at the same condition and at the higher enthalpy condition.
