We examine the potential impact of interconnectivity of value chain partnerships through electronic means (e-business practices) on the management of Public Sector Agriculture R&D in Australia. We review the changing forms of managing research and development, the forces driving these changes, and R&D processes that are theoretically consistent with the move towards value chain involvement and the increase in active constituents in Public Sector Agriculture R&D. We then explore the potential of emerging e-business models to change the patterns of inter-connectivity, speed and omnipresence of partners in the value chain. Three e-business R&D management practices are identified that provide the prerequisite flexibility necessary to take advantage of opportunistic markets. These R&D business practices are: compressing R&D to reduce time to market, fostering co-development to enter a market at the last moment and building flexible products that allow adjustment at the last possible moment. Some fundamental reallocation of existing resources will be required to meet these markets. Implications of these e-business practices for R&D management are discussed.

As the United States and Australia struggle with contemporary crises over competing uses of rapidly depleting natural resources, there are striking parallels between American Indian and Australian Aboriginal communities demanding a place at the management table and offering culturally based understandings of and solutions for the ecosystems at risk. These efforts to integrate indigenous knowledge into mainstream natural resource management are part of larger legal and political debates over land tenure, the locus of control, indigenous self-governance, and holistic ecosystems management.

Two of the best understood somatic cell mRNA cytoplasmic trafficking elements are those governing localization of beta-actin and myelin basic protein mRNAs. These cis-acting elements bind the trans-acting factors fibroblast ZBP-1 and hnRNP A2, respectively. It is not known whether these elements fulfil other roles in mRNA metabolism. To address this question we have used Edman sequencing and western blotting to identify six rat brain proteins that bind the beta-actin element (zipcode). All are known RNA-binding proteins and differ from ZBP-1. Comparison with proteins that bind the hnRNP A2 and AU-rich response elements, A2RE/A2RE11 and AURE, showed that AURE and zipcode bind a similar set of proteins that does not overlap with those that bind A2RE11. The zipcode-binding protein, KSRP, and hnRNP A2 were selected for further study and were shown by confocal immunolluorescence microscopy to have similar distributions in the central nervous system, but they were found in largely separate locations in cell nuclei. In the cytoplasm of cultured oligodendrocytes they were segregated into separate populations of cytoplasmic granules. We conclude that not only may there be families of trans-acting factors for the same cis-acting element, which are presumably required at different stages of mRNA processing and metabolism, but independent factors may also target different and multiple RNAs in the same cell.

Spaceborne/airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems provide high resolution two-dimensional terrain imagery. The paper proposes a technique for combining multiple SAR images, acquired on flight paths slightly separated in the elevation direction, to generate high resolution three-dimensional imagery. The technique could be viewed as an extension to interferometric SAR (InSAR) in that it generates topographic imagery with an additional dimension of resolution. The 3-D multi-pass SAR imaging system is typically characterised by a relatively short ambiguity length in the elevation direction. To minimise the associated ambiguities we exploit the relative phase information within the set of images to track the terrain landscape. The SAR images are then coherently combined, via a nonuniform DFT, over a narrow (in elevation) volume centred on the 'dominant' terrain ground plane. The paper includes a detailed description of the technique, background theory, including achievable resolution, and the results of an experimental study.

Spontaneous pneumothorax is a frequent complication in advanced lung disease of cystic fibrosis. We describe a case of a complicated pneumothorax in a 21-year old-woman with cystic fibrosis who was effectively treated with the application of biological glue via a minithoracotomy. We give conditions on f involving pairs of discrete lower and discrete upper solutions which lead to the existence of at least three solutions of the discrete two-point boundary value problem yk+1 - 2yk + yk-1 + f (k, yk, vk) = 0, for k = 1,..., n - 1, y0 = 0 = yn,, where f is continuous and vk = yk - yk-1, for k = 1,..., n. In the special case f (k, t, p) = f (t) greater than or equal to 0, we give growth conditions on f and apply our general result to show the existence of three positive solutions. We give an example showing this latter result is sharp. Our results extend those of Avery and Peterson and are in the spirit of our results for the continuous analogue. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. This paper argues that a 'new local governance' discourse offers some promise as a policy framework that can re-conceptualise the state-community (and market) relationship and deliver improved community outcomes, particularly in the context of place based or spatial policies and programs.

The approach to maintenance management has changed over the last one hundred years. Over the last few years, the Reliability Engineering and Risk Management Group (RERMG) at the University of Queensland has developed an approach called the strategic maintenance management (SMM) approach. The paper outlines the approach and contrasts it with the current approaches. It then discusses the industry-university partnership in the implementation of this approach and the current activities at the University of Queensland to assist industry in the implementation of the SMM approach.

The purpose of this study was to examine attitudinal barriers to effective pain management in a consecutively recruited cohort of 114 cancer patients from four Australian hospitals. When surveyed, 48% of this sample reported experiencing pain within the previous 24 hours. Of these, 56% reported this pain to be distressing, horrible or excruciating, with large proportions indicating that this pain had affected their movement, sleep and emotional well-being. Three factors were identified as potentially impacting on patients responses to pain-poor levels of patient knowledge about pain, low perceived control over pain, and a deficit in communication about pain. A trend for older patients to experience more severe pain was also identified. These older patients reported being more willing to tolerate pain and perceive less control over their pain. Suggestions are made for developing patient education programs and farther research using concepts drawn from broader social and behavioral models. J Pain Symptom Manage 2002:23:393-405. A protocol based on seed culture was developed for efficient in vitro propagation of lentil (Lens culinaris Medik). Benzyladenine (BA), thidiazuron (TDZ), and kinetin all induced multiple shoot formation. In terms of the number of long shoots (>2.0 cm) produced per seed, BA and TDZ at optimum concentrations (0.2-0.4 and 0.1 mg/litre, respectively) had similar efficiency, whereas kinetin produced less shoots. Murashige and Skoog (MS) salt composition was better than that of Gamborge (B5) for shoot induction. Increasing calcium (Ca) concentration was necessary to overcome shoot-tip necrosis. For shoot elongation, fresh medium of the same composition of shoot induction medium could be used for stumps from medium with low BA (
