Magnetic resonance (MR) techniques have become essential in clinical practice and a broad range of research areas. We begin with a review of the potential and limitations for resolution improvements by MR techniques. The kidney has distinct regional structural, functional and biochemical variability. The isolated perfused rat kidney (IPRK) retains renal function while eliminating movement and susceptibility boundaries which severely limit the potential of MR techniques. The IPRK, with a length of less than 20 mm in the longest axis, will be used to illustrate the potential resolution of different MR techniques and the different: biological information that can be obtained. The aim Of this study was to develop a steel powder system for rapid tooling applications. The properties required are rapid densification, dimensional precision. high mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. To this end. the densification and microstructural development of a loose packed 200 grade maraging steel powder sintered with ferrophosphorous additions was examined. Liquid initially formed from a reaction of the Fe3P and carbon, which was a residue of the polymeric binder used to shape the powder compact. This liquid caused a burst of sintering which ceased as the liquid dissipated. On further heating, a phosphorous rich supersolidus liquid appeared at triple points and grain boundaries leading to rapid densification and a sintered density of 98%.

In a recent study, severe distortions in the proton images of an excised, fixed, human brain in an 11.1 Tesla/40 cm MR instrument have been observed, and the effect modeled on phantom images using a finite difference time domain (FDTD) model. in the present study, we extend these simulations to that of a complete human head, employing a hybrid FDTD and method of moments (MoM) approach, which provides a validated method for simulating biological samples in coil structures. The effect of fixative on the image distortions is explored. importantly, temperature distributions within the head are also simulated using a bioheat method based on parameters derived from the electromagnetic simulations. The MoM/FDTD simulations confirm that the transverse magnetic field (B,) from a ReCav resonator exhibits good homogeneity in air but strong inhomogeneity when loaded with the head with or without fixative. The fixative serves to increase the distortions, but they are still significant for the in vivo simulations. The simulated signal intensity (SI) distribution within the sample confirm the distortions in the experimental images are caused by the complex interactions of the incident electromagnetic fields with tissue, which is heterogeneous in terms of conductivity and permittivity. The temperature distribution is likewise heterogeneous, raising concerns regarding hot spot generation in the sample that may exceed acceptable levels in future in vivo studies. As human imaging at 11.1 T is some time away, simulations are important in terms of predicting potential safety issues as well as evaluating practical concerns about the quality of images. Simulation on a whole human head at 11.1 T implies the wave behavior presents significant engineering challenges for ultra-high-field (UHF) MRI. Novel strategies will have to be employed in imaging technique and resonator design for UHF MRI to achieve the theoretical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvements it offers over lower field systems. The efficiency of numerous mineral processing operations can be determined by measuring the magnetic properties of the process streams. This measurement, if done at all, is currently performed by laboratory testing of spot samples. This is an inherently slow process and, where feed grades are variable, optimum performance is generally not achieved. This paper describes the rapid measurement of the magnetic properties of minerals. AC measurement techniques, including the analysis of the phase component of the magnetic vector; frequency dependent magnetic susceptibility and the effect of applied magnetic field strength will be discussed. Industrial applications in mineral sands, copper smelting, ferrosilicon testing and drill core scanning will be reported. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A powerful decoupling method is introduced to obtain decoupled signal voltages from quadrature coils in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The new method uses the knowledge of the position of the signal source in MRI, the active slice, to define a new mutual impedance which accurately quantifies the coupling voltages and enables them to be removed almost completely. Results show that by using the new decoupling method, the percentage errors in the decoupled voltages are of the order of 10(-7)% and isolations between two coils are more than 170 dB.

Spoken word production is assumed to involve stages of processing in which activation spreads through layers of units comprising lexical-conceptual knowledge and their corresponding phonological word forms. Using high-field (4T) functional magnetic resonance imagine (fMRI), we assessed whether the relationship between these stages is strictly serial or involves cascaded-interactive processing, and whether central (decision/control) processing mechanisms are involved in lexical selection. Participants performed the competitor priming paradigm in which distractor words, named from a definition and semantically related to a subsequently presented target picture, slow picture-naming latency compared to that with unrelated words. The paradigm intersperses two trials between the definition and the picture to be named, temporally separating activation in the word perception and production networks. Priming semantic competitors of target picture names significantly increased activation in the left posterior temporal cortex, and to a lesser extent the left middle temporal cortex, consistent with the predictions of cascaded-interactive models of lexical access. In addition, extensive activation was detected in the anterior cingulate and pars orbitalis of the inferior frontal gyrus. The findings indicate that lexical selection during competitor priming is biased by top-down mechanisms to reverse associations between primed distractor words and target pictures to select words that meet the current goal of speech.

Classic identity negative priming (NP) refers to the finding that when an object is ignored, subsequent naming responses to it are slower than when it has not been previously ignored (Tipper, S.P., 1985. The negative priming effect: inhibitory priming by ignored objects. Q. J. Exp. Psychol. 37A, 571-590). It is unclear whether this phenomenon arises due to the involvement of abstract semantic representations that the ignored object accesses automatically. Contemporary connectionist models propose a key role for the anterior temporal cortex in the representation of abstract semantic knowledge (e.g., McClelland, J.L., Rogers, T.T., 2003. The parallel distributed processing approach to semantic cognition. Nat. Rev. Neurosci. 4, 310-322), suggesting that this region should be involved during performance of the classic identity NP task if it involves semantic access. Using high-field (4 T) event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, we observed increased BOLD responses in the left anterolateral temporal cortex including the temporal pole that was directly related to the magnitude of each individual's NP effect, supporting a semantic locus. Additional signal increases were observed in the supplementary eye fields (SEF) and left inferior parietal lobule (IPL). (c) 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This study determined the relationship between two measures of field fertility of I I high-use Australian artificial insemination (AI) dairy bulls and thirty standard laboratory assessments of spermatozoal post-thaw viability. The two measures of field fertility used, conception rates (cCR) and non-return rates (cNRR), were both corrected for all major non-bull variables. Sperm viability assessments were conducted on semen collected within the same season as that used to derive the field fertility estimates. These assessments measured sperm concentration, motility, morphology and membrane integrity at thawing, after 2 h incubation and after the swim-up sperm selection procedure. Derivations of these measures and in vitro embryo fertilizing and developmental capacity were also determined. The Genstat Statistical Package [Genstat 5 Release 4.2 Reference Manual, VSN International, Oxford, 20001 was used to conduct an analysis of variance on the viability parameters across semen straws and bulls, and to calculate the strength of correlation between each semen parameter, cNRR and cCR in a correlation matrix. Step forward multiple regression identified the combination of semen parameters that were most highly correlated with cCR and with cNRR. The sperm parameters identified as being most predictive of cCR were the percentage of morphologically normal sperm immediately post-thaw (zeroNorm), the number of morphologically normal sperm after the swim-up procedure (nSuNorm), and the rate of zygote cleavage in vitro (Clv); the predictive equation formed by these parameters accounted for 70% of variance. The predictive equation produced for cNRR contained the variables zeroNorm, the proportion of membrane intact sperm after 2 h incubation at 37 degreesC (twoMem) and Clv and accounted for 76.5% of the variation. ZeroNorm was found to be consistent across straws and semen batches within-bull and the sperm parameter with the strongest individual predictive capacity for both cCR (P = 0.1) and cNRR (P = 0.001). Post-thaw sperm parameters can be used to predict field fertility of Australian dairy sires; the calculated predictive equations are particularly useful for identifying and monitoring bulls of very high and very low potential fertility within a group.
