CULTURE is an Artificial Life simulation that aims to provide primary school children with opportunities to become actively engaged in the high-order thinking processes of problem solving and critical thinking. A preliminary evaluation of CULTURE has found that it offers the freedom for children to take part in process-oriented learning experiences. Through providing children with opportunities to make inferences, validate results, explain discoveries and analyse situations, CULTURE encourages the development of high-order thinking skills. The evaluation found that CULTURE allows users to autonomously explore the important scientific concepts of life and living, and energy and change within a software environment that children find enjoyable and easy to use.

Cultural studies has often been accused of maintaining too strong a focus on the contemporary and the immediate as a result of its primary interest in popular culture and the media. The role of history, such criticisms suggest, has been displaced by this contemporary emphasis. Nonetheless, much cultural studies work takes a principled stand on the necessity of historicising the products of its research. Consequently, it is worth asking, with British historian Carolyn Steedman--'why does cultural studies want history?' This article begins to answer that question through the discussion of some aspects of a specific research project within Australian cultural studies.

The flock-level sensitivity of pooled faecal culture and serological testing using AGID for the detection of ovine Johne's disease-infected flocks were estimated using non-gold-standard methods. The two tests were compared in an extensive field trial in 296 flocks in New South Wales during 1998. In each flock, a sample of sheep was selected and tested for ovine Johne's disease using both the AGID and pooled faecal culture. The flock-specificity of pooled faecal culture also was estimated from results of surveillance and market-assurance testing in New South Wales. The overall flock-sensitivity of pooled faecal culture was 92% (95% CI: 82.4 and 97.4%) compared to 61% (50.5 and 70.9%) for serology (assuming that both tests were 100% specific). Heparan sulphate is an important mediator in determining vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) phenotype. The sulphation pattern of the heparan sulphate chains is critical to their function. We have examined the initial step in the biosynthesis of the sulphated domains mediated by the enzyme heparan sulphate N-deacetylase/N-sulphotransferase (NDST). Rabbit aortic SMC in primary culture exhibited NDST enzyme activity and expressed NDST-1 in their Golgi apparatus, with maximal expression in SMC 2 days after dispersal in primary culture confirmed by Western blot analysis. Endothelial cells, macrophages and fibroblasts expressed NDST-1 but had generally less intense staining than SMC, although SMC expression decreased with culture. The uninjured rat aorta also showed widespread expression of NDST-1. After balloon de-endothelialisation, NDST-1 could not be detected in SMC of the neointima in the early stages of neointimal formation, but was re-expressed at later time points (after 12 weeks). In human coronary arteries, SMC of the media and the diffuse intimal thickening expressed NDST-1, while SMC in the atherosclerotic plaque were negative for NDST-1. We conclude that SMC may regulate their heparan sulphate sulphation at the level of expression of the enzyme heparan sulphate NDST in a manner related to their phenotypic state.

Introduction: the rise and rise of the public intellectual My starting point is the remarkable rise to prominence of public intellectuals – and talk about public intellectuals – over the last decade in Australia. Since 1997, especially, this has occurred around Indigenous questions with the result that issues such as the stolen generations, genocide, the apology and reconciliation have also gained new prominence. This is undeniably a good thing. New ways of thinking about history and the nation and new kinds of public ethical discourse have been put into circulation. History as battleground is preferable to the great Australian silence. And yet – my starting point is also the ambivalent effects and meanings of these recent developments, not least the way that the debates have centred so much around the figure of the 'public intellectual', the way that certain kinds of intellectuals and intellectual discourse have come to dominate the mainstream representation of the issues.
