This paper deals with the impact of several antenna chices on the radio transmission performance within a cellular Mobile Broaband System (MBS) currently under research in Europe. Several antenna types are considered, namely switchable-beam antennas and adaptive antennas employing a phased array approach.

This paper is concerned with the implementation of a Mobile Broadband System, currently under research in Europe. We present a low-complexity, adaptive transceiver/antenna approach where simple, linear, phased arrays are adjusted under a transmission quality measurement provided by a decision-feedback equalizer. Several simulation results are presented and discussed.

MC-CDMA (MultiCarrier Code Division Multiple Access), currently regarded as a promissing multiple access scheme for broadband communications, is known to combine the advantages of an OFDM-based (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing), CP-assisted (Cyclic Prefix) block transmission with those of CDMA systems. Recently, it was recognised that DS-CDMA (Direct Sequence) implementations can also take advantage of the beneficts of the CP-assisted block transmission approach, therefore enabling an efficient use of FFT-based (Fast Fourier Transform), chip level FDE (Frequency- Domain Equalisation) techniques. In this paper we consider the use of IB-DFE (Iterative Block Decision Feedback Equalisation) FDE techniques within both CP-assisted MC-CDMA systems with frequency-domain spreading and DS-CDMA systems. Our simulation results show that an IB-DFE receiver with moderate complexity is suitable in both cases, with excellent performances that can be close to the single-code matched filter bound (especially for the CP-assisted DSCDMA alternative), even with full code usage.

In this paper we consider the uplink transmission within CP-assisted (Cyclic Pre¯x) DS-CDMA (Direct Sequence Code Division Multiple Access) systems and we present a frequency-domain MUD (MultiUser Detection) receiver with iterative estimation and compensation of residual frequency errors. The proposed receiver is suitable for broadband wireless systems, with performances that can be close to the single-user MFB (Matched Filter Bound), even for fully loaded systems and/or in the presence of strong interfering signals. The receiver is powerful enough for typical asynchronous scenarios, requiring only a coarse synchronization between users.

In this paper we present iterative frequency-domain multiuser detection (MUD) receivers for the uplink transmission of direct sequence code division multiple access systems (DS-CDMA) that combine iterative block decision feedback equalization (IB-DFE) principles with interference cancelation techniques. Both successive interference cancelation (SIC) and parallel interference cancelation (PIC) structures are considered. Our performance results show that the proposed receiver structures have excellent bit error rate (BER) performances, that can be close to the single-user matched filter bound (MFB), even for fully loaded systems and severely time-dispersive channels1.

In this paper, we consider low-PMEPR (Peak-to-Mean Envelope Power Ratio) MC-CDMA (Multicarrier Coded Division Multiple Access) schemes. We develop frequencydomain turbo equalizers combined with an iterative estimation and cancellation of nonlinear distortion effects. Our receivers have relatively low complexity, since they allow FFT-based (Fast Fourier Transform) implementations. The proposed turbo receivers allow significant performance improvements at low and moderate SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio), even when a low-PMEPR MC-CDMA transmission is intended.

The objective of this thesis is to study the properties of resistive switching effect based on bistable resistive memory which is fabricated in the form of Al2O3/polymer diodes and to contribute to the elucidation of resistive switching mechanisms. Resistive memories were characterized using a variety of electrical techniques, including current-voltage measurements, small-signal impedance, and electrical noise based techniques. All the measurements were carried out over a large temperature range. Fast voltage ramps were used to elucidate the dynamic response of the memory to rapid varying electric fields. The temperature dependence of the current provided insight into the role of trapped charges in resistive switching. The analysis of fast current fluctuations using electric noise techniques contributed to the elucidation of the kinetics involved in filament formation/rupture, the filament size and correspondent current capabilities. The results reported in this thesis provide insight into a number of issues namely: (i) The fundamental limitations on the speed of operation of a bi-layer resistive memory are the time and voltage dependences of the switch-on mechanism. (ii) The results explain the wide spread in switching times reported in the literature and the apparently anomalous behaviour of the high conductance state namely the disappearance of the negative differential resistance region at high voltage scan rates which is commonly attributed to a “dead time” phenomenon which had remained elusive since it was first reported in the ‘60s. (iii) Assuming that the current is filamentary, Comsol simulations were performed and used to explain the observed dynamic properties of the current-voltage characteristics. Furthermore, the simulations suggest that filaments can interact with each other. (iv) The current-voltage characteristics have been studied as a function of temperature. The findings indicate that creation and annihilation of filaments is controlled by filling and neutralizing traps localized at the oxide/polymer interface. (v) Resistive switching was also studied in small-molecule OLEDs. It was shown that the degradation that leads to a loss of light output during operation is caused by the presence of a resistive switching layer. A diagnostic tool that predicts premature failure of OLEDs was devised and proposed. Resistive switching is a property of oxides. These layers can grow in a number of devices including, organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), spin-valve transistors and photovoltaic devices fabricated in different types of material. Under strong electric fields the oxides can undergo dielectric breakdown and become resistive switching layers. Resistive switching strongly modifies the charge injection causing a number of deleterious effects and eventually device failure. In this respect the findings in this thesis are relevant to understand reliability issues in devices across a very broad field.

The present dissertation examines how grammatical aspect and mood are handled by machine translation (MT) systems within the scope of imperative sentences (orders, recommendations) when dealing with the language pair French-Greek (unidirectional, towards Greek). As the grammatical category of aspect is not expressed in the same way in both languages, choosing the correct aspect value when translating a verb from French to Greek can pose problems. We are interested in describing the types of errors that occur and their frequency in a corpus taken from texts pertaining to the security domain and from technical manuals, where imperative sentences are very common. In order to further delimit our research, our sample consists of sentences that comply with the general principles of simplicity and readability provided by several controlled language guidelines and aimed at higher translatability when having MT in mind. In a second phase, this study aims at discovering how modifying some of the control rules would help (or not) the MT systems better decide upon the translation of aspect and mood.
