Gestão de desempenho numa rede celular

A realização desta dissertação tem como principal objetivo a análise de indicadores chave de desempenho numa rede celular de terceira geração - Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), bem como a aplicação de técnicas matemáticas de previsão como apoio ao respetivo planeamento e otimização. Para o efeito, foi inicialmente efetuado um estudo sobre a evolução das comunicações de uma forma generalista, até às redes de nova geração, abordando individualmente, as de voz, as de dados e as comunicações móveis, assim como, uma breve descrição das organizações envolvidas nestas mudanças. No seguimento do estudo inicial, dando enfoque à tecnologia UMTS, foram expostas as suas características, a sua estrutura e arquitetura. Foram ainda elaboradas, duas comparações, com base em diferentes parâmetros, uma com a tecnologia da geração anterior e outra, com a de última geração. Com base nos conhecimentos adquiridos em diferentes pesquisas, foram estudados, os indicadores chave de desempenho (KPIs), as técnicas de planeamento e otimização, apresentando propostas de prevenção e soluções para problemas existentes na rede.

Decision-making process in Portuguese Erasmus student mobility: case study

With the evolution of nowadays knowledge-based economies, the labour class becomes more competitive. As a way of getting skills that bring benefits to their careers, university students take advantage of the many opportunities available and go abroad to study. This study develops and empirically tests a structural model that examines the antecedents that influence the decision-making process of an Erasmus student under mobility for studies (EMS) in Aveiro, Coimbra and Porto (2014-2015). Reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis and linear regressions were used to evaluate the model. Based on a survey with a sample of 872 valid responses, this study has demonstrated that EMS students are also influenced by touristic factors, which gives support to what has recently been approached by other authors. Conclusions and suggestions can be applied by other organizations, mainly Higher Education Institutions in order to attract more EMS students.

Ecology and physical condition of red deer in the Iberian Peninsula: implications for management

The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is currently one of the most widespread and abundant wild ungulates in the Iberian Peninsula and is extremely important both ecologically, as a key species for the functioning of the ecosystems, and economically, as a major game species. In Iberia, red deer populations are subjected to different management systems that may affect the physical condition of the individuals, with further consequences for population dynamics. Studies investigating the effects of management practices and environmental conditions on the performance of red deer are still rare regarding Mediterranean ecosystems. Much of the knowledge concerning the ecology of red deer and the impact of management on its physical condition is based on studies conducted in northern and central regions of Europe, where climatological features and management practices differ from those observed in the Mediterranean areas of Iberia. Studies on a biogeographical scale can provide important insights into the relationships between species and a particular environment and contribute to the development of more targeted and appropriate management practices. The optimisation of sampling procedures and the fine-tuning of pre-existing analytical techniques are also fundamental to a more cost-effective monitoring and, therefore, are of enormous value to wildlife managers. In this context, the main aims of this thesis were: 1) to optimise the procedures used to assess the physical condition of red deer; and 2) to identify relevant management and environmental factors affecting the nutritional condition and stress physiology of red deer in the Mediterranean ecosystems of Iberia, as well as any potential interactions between those factors. Two studies with a methodological focus, presented in the first part of the thesis, demonstrated that the physical condition of red deer can be evaluated more simply, using more cost- and time-effective procedures than those traditionally used: i) it was shown that only one kidney and its associated fat is enough to assess nutritional condition in red deer; and ii) the feasibility of using near infrared spectroscopy to predict the concentrations of stress hormone metabolites was demonstrated using faeces of red deer for the first time. Subsequently, two large-scale observational studies, conducted in representative red deer populations found in Mediterranean Iberia, highlighted the importance of considering seasonal environmental variations and variables related to hunting management practices to better understand the nutritional and physiological ecology of red deer. High population densities had adverse effects on the nutritional condition of the deer and were associated with increased stress levels in natural populations without supplementary feeding. Massive hunting events involving the use of hounds were also identified as a potential source of chronic stress in red deer. The research presented in this thesis has clear implications regarding the management and monitoring of red deer populations in Mediterranean environments and is intended to help wildlife managers to implement more effective monitoring programmes and sustainable management practices.

O papel do bilinguismo no processo de difusão das línguas

O presente estudo propõe-se estudar as representações de alunos bilingues e não bilingues acerca do papel do bilinguismo no processo de difusão das línguas. Para dar resposta a este objetivo, desenhámos um projeto de intervenção que compreendeu a utilização de duas técnicas de recolha de dados: a entrevista e o inquérito por questionário, que implementámos a alunos do distrito de Aveiro. Os resultados obtidos permitiram concluir que, de forma geral, os alunos consideram que os falantes são os principais responsáveis pela difusão das línguas, contribuindo para o aumento de utilizadores da mesma e, portanto, para a sua expansão.

História dos ralis em Portugal : projeto de edição

O desporto automóvel, e particularmente os ralis, tem milhares de seguidores em Portugal. Apesar de existirem algumas obras que relatam com rigor a história do automobilismo desportivo em Portugal, nenhuma consagrou por inteiro o seu espaço às provas de estrada que, há mais de 100 anos, fascinam multidões. O projeto para a edição de uma obra consagrada aos ralis sustenta a sua viabilidade no interesse que a mesma possa despertar tanto em adeptos, como em parceiros de diferente natureza que possam vislumbrar mais-valias numa possível parceria com o editor da obra. Editar uma obra que faz a história dos ralis em Portugal implica a consciencialização de que o mercado-alvo é de natureza restrita e que, por essa razão, os meios de divulgação e comercialização devem ser focalizados com um cuidado redobrado. O relatório apresenta as diferentes tarefas da edição da obra. Algumas são comuns a tudo o que é editável, como a conceção gráfica. Outras são do mundo da edição impressa, como a escolha do papel ou das tintas. Algumas, ainda, são específicas das edições que procuram fazer a história de um desporto em que o movimento, a cor, o imprevisto, os pormenores, são parte importante da sua história, como a escolha de fotografias ou a inserção de caixas de texto com a mais variada informação.
