In this study, the feasibility of using H3PO4-activated lignin for hexavalent chromium adsorption has been investigated. The composite of activated lignin was characterized using FTIR, XRD and SEM with EDAX analysis. It was observed that the pH had a strong effect on the adsorption capacity; adsorption of Cr(VI) was more favorable at acidic pH with maximum uptake at pH 2. The adsorption equilibrium data were best represented by Koble-Corrigan isotherm. The monolayer sorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was found to be 77.85 mg/g. Adsorption showed pseudo-second order rate kinetics and the process involving the rate-controlling step is complex as it involves both film and intraparticle diffusion processes. The NaOH desorbing agent was able to release approximately 84% of metal ions. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the sorption process is exothermic and non-spontaneous. The overall Cr(VI) retention on the activated lignin surface perhaps includes both the physical adsorption of Cr(VI) and the consequent reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Surface reaction methodology was implicated in the optimization of hexavalent chromium removal onto lignin with respect to the process parameters. The influence of altering the conditions for removal of chromium(VI), for instance; solution pH, ionic strength, initial concentration, the dose of biosorbent, presence of other metals (Zn and Cu), presence of salts and biosorption-desorption studies, were investigated. It was found that the biosorption capacity of lignin depends on solution pH, with a maximum biosorption capacity for chromium at pH 2. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to five different isotherm models by non-linear regression method, however, the biosorption equilibrium data were well interpreted by the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum biosorption capacities (q(max)) obtained using Dubinin-Radushkevich and Khan isotherms for Cr(VI) biosorption are 31.6 and 29.1 mg/g. respectively. Biosorption showed pseudo second order rate kinetics at different initial concentrations of Cr(VI). The intraparticle diffusion study indicated that film diffusion may be involved in the current study. The percentage removal of chromium on lignin decreased significantly in the presence of NaHCO3 and K2P2O7 salts. Desorption data revealed that nearly 70% of the Cr(VI) adsorbed on lignin could be desorbed using 0.1 M NaOH. It was evident that the biosorption mechanism involves the attraction of both hexavalent chromium (anionic) and trivalent chromium (cationic) onto the surface of lignin. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. The accuracy and reliability of popular density functional approximations for the compounds giving origin to room temperature ionic liquids have been assessed by computing the T=0 K crystal structure of several 1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium salts. Two prototypical exchange-correlation approximations have been considered, i.e., the local density approximation (LDA) and one gradient corrected scheme [PBE-GGA, Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 3865 (1996)]. Comparison with low-temperature x-ray diffraction data shows that the equilibrium volume predicted by either approximations is affected by large errors, nearly equal in magnitude (~10%), and of opposite sign. In both cases the error can be traced to a poor description of the intermolecular interactions, while the intramolecular structure is fairly well reproduced by LDA and PBE-GGA. The PBE-GGA optimization of atomic positions within the experimental unit cell provides results in good agreement with the x-ray structure. The correct system volume can also be restored by supplementing PBE-GGA with empirical dispersion terms reproducing the r-6 attractive tail of the van der Waals interactions.

The extraction of both UO22+ and trivalent lanthanide and actinide ions (Am3+, Nd3+, Eu3+) by dialkylphosphoric or dialkylphosphinic acids from aqueous solutions into the ionic liquid, 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide has been studied and compared to extractions into dodecane. Radiotracer partitioning measurements show comparable patterns of distribution ratios for both the ionic liquid/aqueous and dodecane/aqueous systems, and the limiting slopes at low acidity indicate the partitioning of neutral complexes in both solvent systems. The metal ion coordination environment, elucidated from EXAFS and UV-visible spectroscopy measurements, is equivalent in the ionic liquid and dodecane solutions with coordination of the uranyl cation by two hydrogen-bonded extractant dimers, and of the trivalent cations by three extractant dimers. This is the first definitive report of a system where both the biphasic extraction equilibria and metal coordination environment are the same in an ionic liquid and a molecular organic solvent.

We summarize results obtained by a combination of ab initio and classical computer simulations of dialkylimidazolium ionic liquids in different states of aggregation, from crystals to liquids and clusters. Unusual features arising from the competition between electrostatic, dispersion, and hydrogen-bonding interactions are identified at the origin of observed structural patterns. We also discuss the way Brønsted acids interact with ionic liquids leading to the formation of hydrogen-bonded anions.

This paper describes the use of extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) to examine the structure of molten salts and ionic liquids and species dissolved in them. The EXAFS theory is briefly described as are the methods by which EXAFS of these systems can be studied. A range of applications have used EXAFS to investigate the structure of metallic species in ionic liquids from extraction studies to catalysts. The area of structural investigations of ionic liquids is still being developed, although growing rapidly, whereas the structure of molten salts has been studied using EXAFS in more detail.

The properties of the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium salt of the dinuclear mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato)bis[bis-(nitrato-O,O)dioxouranate(VI)] anion have been investigated using electrochemistry, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and extended X-ray absorbance fine structure spectroscopy: the anion structures from these last two techniques are in excellent agreement with each other. Electrochemical reduction of the complex leads to the a two-electron metal-centered reduction of U(VI) to U(IV), and the production Of UO2, or a complex containing UO2. Under normal conditions, this leads to the coating of the electrode with a passivating film. The presence of volatile organic compounds in the ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate (where the 1-alkyl chain was methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, pentyl, hexyl, dodecyl, hexadecyl, or octadecyl) during the oxidative dissolution of uranium(IV) oxide led to the formation of a yellow precipitate. To understand the effect of the cation upon the composition and structure of the precipitates, 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts of a number of nitratodioxouranate(VI) complexes were synthesized and then analyzed using X-ray crystallography. It was demonstrated that the length of the 1-alkyl chain played an important role, not only in the composition of the complex salt, but also in the synthesis of dinuclear anions containing the bridging mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato), or oxalato, ligand, by protecting it from further oxidation.

Using neutron and single crystal X-ray diffraction the structures of 1,3-dimethylimidazolim chloride and hexafluorophosphate salts have been determined in the liquid and the solid-state. The relative hydrogen bonding characteristics and sizes of the two anions force the ions to pack differently. In each case, a strong correlation between the crystal structure and liquid structure is found.

The structure of the 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium salts of the dinuclear mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato)-bis[bis(nitrato-O,O)dioxouranate(VI)] anion have been investigated using single crystal X-ray crystallography. In addition, EXAFS and electrochemical studies have been performed on the [C(4)mim](+) salt which is formed following the oxidative dissolution of uranium(IV) oxide in [C(4)mim][NO3]. EXAFS analysis of the solution following UO2 dissolution indicates a mixture of uranyl nitrate and mu(4)-(O,O,O',O'-ethane-1,2-dioato)-bis[bis(nitrato-O,O)dioxouranate(VI)] anions are formed.

The structure of liquid 1, 3-dimethylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate is described in detail and compared with the structure of 1, 3-dimethylimidazolium chloride. In each case, the data were obtained from neutron diffraction experiments and analysed using an empirical potential structure refinement process. Overall, the structures are similar; however, significant differences arise from the variation in anion size.

1-Alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrachloropalladate(ii) salts ([C-n-mim](2)[PdCl4], n = 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) containing a single, linear alkyl-chain substituent on the cation have been synthesised and their behaviour characterised by differential scanning calorimetry, polarising optical microscopy and small-angle X-ray scattering. The salts display thermotropic polymorphism, exhibiting both crystal-crystal transitions and, for n = 14-18, the formation of a thermotropic smectic liquid crystalline phase.
