Light transmission through a single subwavelength aperture in a silver film is examined with a novel input configuration comprising an annular laser beam of variable diameter that is prism-coupled to the back face of the silver. Transmission peaks driven by excitation of the back-face surface plasmon mode or by the aperture resonance itself are separately observed. For both cases, comparison of films with and without a front-face, circular grating implies significantly more efficient coupling from the aperture fields to the front-face surface plasmon than directly to free radiation. Nitric oxide generates slow electrical oscillations (SEOs) in cells near the myenteric edge of the circular muscle layer, which resemble slow waves generated by interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) at the submucosal edge of this muscle. The properties of SEOs were studied to determine whether these events are similar to slow waves. Rapid frequency membrane potential oscillations (MPOs; 16 +/- 1 cycles/min and 9.6 +/- 0.2 mV) were recorded from control muscles near the myenteric edge. Sodium nitroprusside (0.3 microM) reduced MPOs and initiated SEOs (1.3 +/- 0.3 cycles/min and 13.4 +/- 1.4 mV amplitude). SEOs were abolished by the guanylate cyclase inhibitor 1H-[1,2,4]-oxadiazolo-[4,3-a]-quinoxaline-1-one (10 microM). MPOs were abolished by nifedipine (1 microM), whereas SEO frequency increased and the amount of depolarization decreased. BAY K 8644 (1 microM) prolonged SEOs and reduced their frequency. SEOs were abolished by Ni(2+) (0.5 mM), low Ca(2+) solution (0.1 mM Ca(2+)), cyclopiazonic acid (10 microM), and the mitochondrial uncouplers antimycin (10 microM) and carbonyl cyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenylhydrazone (1 microM). Oligomycin (10 microM) was without effect. These effects are similar to those described for colonic slow waves. Our results suggest that nitric oxide-induced SEOs are similar in mechanism to slow waves, an activity not previously thought to be generated by myenteric pacemakers.

Absolute configurations of a number of cis-dihydrodiols (cis-1,2-dihydroxy-3,5-cyclohexadienes), synthetically useful products of TDO-catalyzed dihydroxylations of 1,2- and 1,3-disubstituted benzene derivatives, have been determined by a comparison of calculated and experimental CD spectra and optical rotations and by methods involving X-ray crystallography, H-1 NMR spectra of diastereoisomeric derivatives, and by stereochemical correlations. The computations disclosed a significant effect of the substituents on conformational equilibria of cis-dihydrodiols and chiroptical properties of individual conformers. The assigned absolute configurations of cis-dihydrodiols have allowed the validity of a simple predictive model for TDO-catalyzed arene dihydroxylations to be extended.

Special issue on Sensor Systems for Structural Health Monitoring Abstract—This study addresses the direct calibration of optical fiber strain sensors used for structural monitoring and is carried out in situ. The behavior of fiber-Bragg-grating-based sensor systems when attached to metal bars, in a manner representative of their use as reinforcement bars in structures, was examined and their response calibrated. To ensure the validity of the measurements, this was done using an extensometer with a further calibrationagainst the response of electrical resistance strain gauges, often conventionally used, for comparison. The results show a repeatable calibration generating a suitable geometric factor of extension to strain for these sensors, to enable accurate strain data to be obtained when the fiber-optic sensor system is in use in structural monitoring applications.

A single layer, frequency selective surface based, sub-millimeter wave transmission polarizer is presented that converts incident slant linear 45° polarization into circular polarization upon transmission. The polarization convertor consists of a 30 mm diameter 10 thick silicon reinforced metalized screen containing 2700 resonator cells and perforated with nested split ring slot apertures. The screen was designed and optimized using CST Microwave Studio and predictions were validated experimentally by transmission measurements over the 250-365 GHz frequency range. This frequency range is used for remote environmental monitoring and 325 GHz represents a molecular emission line for H2O. The results obtained show good agreement between measured and modeled predictions. The measured 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth was 11.75%, measured minimum Axial Ratio was 0.19 dB and the measured insertion loss of the single layer screen was 3.38 dB
