Stoichiometrically equivalent concentrations of ethylenediaminetetraacetate, EDTA, and of related chelating anions increase the adsorption of ca. millimolar concentrations heavy metal aqua-ions on amorphous precipitates of aluminium(III) or iron(III) hydroxide and, although higher concentrations decrease the adsorption, poly-EDTA, a polyelectrolyte containing EDTA functional groups, shows no such decrease.

In this perspective, we highlight the issue of meridional (mer) and facial (fac) orientation of asymmetrical diimines in tris-chelate transition metal complexes. Diimine ligands have long been the workhorse of coordination chemistry, and whilst there are now good strategies to isolate materials where the inherent metal centered chirality is under almost complete control, and systematic methodologies to isolate heteroleptic complexes, the conceptually simple geometrical isomerism has not been widely investigated. In systems where the two donor atoms are significantly different in terms of the σ-donor and π-accepting ability, the fac isomer is likely to be the thermodynamic product. For the diimine complexes with two trigonal planar nitrogen atoms there is much more subtlety to the system, and external factors such as the solvent, lattice packing and the various steric considerations play a delicate role in determining the observed and isolable product. In this article we discuss the possibilities to control the isomeric ratio in labile systems, consider the opportunities to separate inert complexes and discuss the observed differences in their spectroscopic properties. Finally we report on the ligand orientation in supramolecular systems where facial coordination leads to simple regular structures such as helicates and tetrahedra, but the ability of the ligand system to adopt a mer orientation enables self-assembled structures of considerable beauty and complexity.

The synthesis of a number of new 2,2'-bipyridine ligands, functionalized with bulky ester side groups is reported (L2 - L8). Their reaction with [Ru(DMSO)4Cl2] gives rise to tris-chelate ruthenium(II) metal complexes which show an unusually high proportion of the fac-isomer, as judged by 1H NMR following conversion to the ruthenium(II) complex of 2,2'-bipyridine-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester (L1). The initial reaction appears to have thermodynamic control with the steric bulk of the ligands causing the third ligand to be labile under the reaction conditions used, giving rise to disappointing yields and allowing rearrangement to the more stable facial form. DFT studies indicate that this does not appear to be as a consequence of a metal centered electronic effect. The two isomers of [Ru(L1)3](PF6)2 were separated into the two individual forms using silica preparative plate chromatographic procedures, and the photophysical characteristics of the two forms compared. The results appear to indicate that there is no significant difference in both their room temperature electronic absorption and emission spectra or their excited state lifetimes at 77K.

The adsorption of cadmium(II) on freshly precipitated aluminium(III) hydroxide in the presence of a range of chelates has been investigated. By precipitating the metal, chelate and adsorbent together it is possible to change the pH variation of the metal-complex adsorption from anionic, ligand-like, binding to cationic binding. This is a general phenomenon and is explained by the formation of a ternary Al-O-Cd-L surface species. As a consequence of the preparation method, the pH edge is found to shift to lower pH values in the presence of the chelate which gives rise to an apparent increase in adsorption of Cd2+. This increase is, in general, most pronounced at [chelate] / [metal] > 1. Computer modelling shows that the observed trends result from the competition between Al-O-Cd-L and Al-L for the available aluminium( III) binding sites. The enhanced adsorption in the presence of phenylenediaminetetraacetate is anomalous since it is observed at a [ chelate] / [metal] approximate to 0.1 and cannot be interpreted by the simple competition model.

A new route to the isolation of the enantiopure tris- chelate complex (Delta/Lambda)- fac-[Ru( L-1)(3)] 21 (where L-1 is 2,2'-bipyridine-5-carboxylic acid) is demonstrated, where the transition metal centre retains the memory of the chirality present in a simple tripodal tether used to control the metal centred geometry.

Tris-chelate 5-hydroxymethyl-2,2 '-bipyridine complexes of ruthenium (II) and the structurally related benzo- and naphthoesters have been isolated. The mer-isomer of the alcohol functionalised complex has been isolated by selective precipitation from methylene chloride and was subsequently functionalised to the benzoester with retention of the geometrical isomerism. The fac- and merisomeric forms of the ester complexes were separated using preparative plate silica chromatography and characterised by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. X-ray structural analysis of the fac-isomer of both the ester complexes confirmed the product assignment. The photophysical properties of the three isomers were investigated, indicating very similar absorption spectra to [Ru(biPY)(3)](2+). The emission wavelength was comparable in each case, with the aromatic ester complexes giving a much longer lifetime and higher quantum yields. (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new type of near-infrared emitting rare-earth complex has been synthesised, consisting of three bis(perfluoroalkylsulfonyl)imide ligands and one 1,10-phenanthroline molecule. The chelate rings formed by the rare-earth ion and the bidentate ligands do not contain any carbon atoms and can hence be considered as 'inorganic' chelate rings. The absence of C-H stretching vibration modes in the first coordination sphere of the rare-earth ion and the presence of a light-harvesting moiety (1,10-phenanthroline) bound to the rare-earth ion result in a complex that can be efficiently excited and exhibits intense near-infrared luminescence. The new complexes [Pt(dppp)(py)(2)][OTf](2), 1, [Pt(dppp)(2-ap)(2)][OTf](2), 2, [(dppp)Pt(mu -OH){mu -NH(C5H3N)NH2}Pt(dppp)][OTf](2), 3 (py=pyridine, 2-ap=2-aminopyridine, NH(C5H3N)NH2=2,6-diaminopyridine anion, dppp = 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane, OTf=O3SCF3) have been prepared via reactions between [Pt(dppp)(OTf)(2)] and pyridine, 2-aminopyridine or 2,6-diaminopyridine (2,6-dap) respectively. The amines exhibit a range of co-ordination modes. Pyridine and 2-aminopyridine co-ordinate to platinum through endo-nitrogen atoms in complexes 1 and 2, the latter existing as a pair of rotomers due to the steric hindrance introduced by the 2-substituent. However, 2,6-diaminopyridine co-ordinates to platinum through the exo-nitrogen of one amino group, to give the unusual mu -amido complex 3. Reaction of the known orotate chelate complex [Pt(PEt3)(2)(N,O-HL)] [HL=orotate, the dianion of 2,6-dioxo-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid (orotic acid)] with 2,6-dap gave [Pt(PEt3)(2)(2,6-dap)(N-HL)] 4, which contains an unconventional monodentate orotate ligand. In this co-ordination mode the orotate retains an ADA hydrogen bonding site and was found to co-crystallise with 2,6-dap via complementary ADA:DAD triple hydrogen bonds to give [Pt(PEt3)(2)(N-HL)(2,6-dap)].2,6-dap, 5. Complex 5 exhibits a helical chain structure of associated [1+1] adducts in the solid state.

Configurational and ligand conformational influences on the kinetics of (1)A(1) reversible arrow T-5(2) spin crossover in the Fe(II) complex with the novel tripodal ligand, 1,1,1-tris((N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-methylamino)methyl)ethane (tptMetame), have been explored. Despite having six chelate rings and three chiral nitrogen atoms, only one enantiomeric pair of isomers, Delta, SSS, and Lambda, RRR, of the complex ion is observed. The conformation of the three rings forming the upper ''cap'' of the complex structure can be assigned delta or lambda with respect to the 3-fold molecular axis. X-ray data at 300 and 153 K, above and below the critical temperature for the spin transition, show that the conformation of the ligand ''cap'' is the same as the absolute configuration of the complex, with the same Lambda lambda(CAP)(or Delta delta(CAP)) combination prevailing for both the LS ((1)A(1)) and HS (T-5(2)) isomers. Molecular mechanics calculations further show that the ligand energy remains lowest for this Lambda lambda(CAP) (or Delta delta(CAP)) combination at all Fe-N distances over the range spanning the LS and HS isomers. Measurements of the spin crossover relaxation time have been carried out in solution over the temperature range 293-170 K. The observed monophasic relaxation traces are also consistent with the absolute configuration of the complex remaining unaltered during the spin crossover.

Haptoglobin (Hp) is recognised as a major acute phase protein in the bovidae and its presence in serum is used as an indicator of inflammation. A mouse monoclonal antibody (1D9) specific for bovine Hp was labelled with a lanthanide (Eu) chelate and used to develop a competitive immunoassay. This competitive immunoassay allowed direct measurement of Hp in serum and was validated for intra- and interassay coefficients of variation (below 8%). Cross-reactivity with other serum proteins was measured (less than 0.1%) and limits of detection for Hp in serum were established for adult male (0.344 mu g/ml) and adult female cattle (1.589 mu g/ml). The immunoassay was compared with an established haptoglobin-haemoglobin binding assay.

The title compound, [Ni2Cl2(C9H10NO2)(2)]center dot CH3OH, is a dinuclear unit built up by two nickel(II) complexes, bridged by two Cl atoms. The coordination geometry around each Ni-II atom can be considered as distorted square-pyramidal, with the tridendate chelate Schiff base ligands coordinating in a trans conformation through their imine N atom and phenoxy and alkoxy O atoms.
