Surgical optimisation and characterisation of a minimally invasive aortic banding procedure to induce cardiac hypertrophy in mice

Left ventricular pressure overload in response to aortic banding is an invaluable model for studying progression of cardiac hypertrophy and transition to heart failure. Traditional aortic banding has recently been superceded by minimally invasive transverse aortic banding (MTAB) which does not require ventilation so is less technically challenging. Although the MTAB procedure is superior, few laboratories have documented success and minimal information on the model is available. The aim of this study was to optimise conditions for MTAB and to characterise the development and progression of cardiac hypertrophy. Malignant pleural mesothelioma: current treatments and emerging drugs

Background: Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is an uncommon disease whose incidence is increasing worldwide over the past 30 years. Surgical resection and radiotherapy represent the standard treatment in patient with resectable MPM. Chemotherapy is also necessary to reduce incidence of distant metastases, but the optimal setting of treatment (neoadjuvant, adjuvant and intrapleural) is not clarified. For the patients with unresectable MPM, the combination cisplatin and pemetrexed or ralitrexed is the standard treatment as supported by a Phase III study. Better understanding of molecular pathways involved in MPM has enabled inclusion of new drugs targeted against pathways responsible for proliferation, cell survival and angiogenesis. Objective: This review discusses the current treatment option, the specific signal pathways activated in MPM and the novel agents under evaluation in clinical trials. Methods: We use for this article abstracts, papers, oral presentations from ASCO and the website http://www.clinical-trials.gov. Results/conclusion: This review summarizes the activity of chemotherapy and of new agents under evaluation in clinical trials. The better understanding of molecular pathways activated in MPM will hopefully provide new therapeutic options for these patients in the future.

Electronic stopping power of H and He in Al and LiF from first principles

Non-linearities in the electronic stopping power of light projectiles in bulk Al and LiF are addressed from first principles using time-evolving time-dependent density functional theory. In the case of Al, the agreement of the calculations with experiments for H and He projectiles is fair, but a recently observed transition for He from one value of the electronic friction coefficient to a higher value at v ~ 0.3 a.u. is not reproduced by the calculations. For LiF, better accuracy is obtained as compared with previously published simulations, albeit the threshold remains overestimated. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
