The formation of epitaxial BaTiO3/SrTiO3 multilayers; is studied in terms of the growth mechanism by investigating surface morphologies, crystalline orientations, microstructures, and structures of the interfaces, as well as by determining the dielectric properties. Under specific conditions, the epitaxial BaTiO3 films follow a layer-then-island (Stranski-Krastanov) mechanism on SrTiO3 (001)-oriented substrates. In view of actual efforts made to grow epitaxial superlattices involving very thin individual layers of BaTiO3 and/or SrTiO3, we have determined that the BaTiO3 films Of up to 6,nm thickness do not show any defects and have a sharp BaTiO3-on-SrTiO3 interface. On the contrary, SrTiO3-on-BaTiO3 interfaces within multilayers are rough, probably due to the different growth mechanisms of the two different materials, or due to a difference in the morphological stability of the growth surfaces caused by different surface energies of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 and by different mobilities of the Ba and Sr atoms reaching the SrTi3 and BaTiO3 layers, respectively.

Boron-doped titanium dioxide (B-TiO) films were deposited by atmospheric pressure chemical vapour deposition of titanium(iv) chloride, ethyl acetate and tri-isopropyl borate on steel and fluorine-doped-tin oxide substrates at 500, 550 and 600 °C, respectively. The films were characterised using powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), which showed anatase phase TiO at lower deposition temperatures (500 and 550 °C) and rutile at higher deposition temperatures (600 °C). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed a dopant level of 0.9 at% B in an O-substitutional position. The ability of the films to reduce water was tested in a sacrificial system using 365 nm UV light with an irradiance of 2 mW cm. Hydrogen production rates of B-TiO at 24 μL cm h far exceeded undoped TiO at 2.6 μL cm h. The B-TiO samples were also shown to be active for water oxidation in a sacrificial solution. Photocurrent density tests also revealed that B-doped samples performed better, with an earlier onset of photocurrent. © 2013 The Owner Societies.
TiK alpha radiography of Cu-doped plastic microshell implosions via spherically bent crystal imaging
Resumo:
We show that short pulse laser generated Ti K alpha radiation can be used effectively as a backlighter for radiographic imaging. This method of x-ray radiography features high temporal and spatial resolution, high signal to noise ratio, and monochromatic imaging. We present here the Ti K alpha backlit images of six-beam driven spherical implosions of thin-walled 500-mu m Cu-doped deuterated plastic (CD) shells and of similar implosions with an included hollow gold cone. These radiographic results were used to define conditions for the diagnosis of fast ignition relevant electron transport within imploded Cu-doped coned CD shells. Organic light emitting diode devices employing organometallic Nd(9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one)(3) complexes as near infrared emissive dopants dispersed within poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host matrices have been fabricated by spin-casting layers of the doped polymer onto glass/indium tin oxide (ITO)/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT) substrates. Room temperature electroluminescence, centered at similar to 1065 nm. was observed from devices top contacted by evaporated aluminum or calcium metal cathodes and was assigned to transitions between the F-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) levels of the Nd3+ ions. In particular, a near infrared irradiance of 8.5 nW/mm(2) and an external quantum efficiency of 0.007% was achieved using glass/ITO/PEDOT/PVK:Nd(9-hydroxyphenalen-1-one)(3)/Ca/Al devices. Narrow bandwidth red electroluminescence from solution-processed lanthanide-doped polymer thin films
Resumo:
Narrow bandwidth red electroluminescence from OLED devices fabricated using a simple solution-based approach is demonstrated. A spin-casting method is employed to fabricate organic light emitting diode (OLED) devices comprising a poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) host matrix doped with a europium beta-diketonate complex, Eu(dbM)(3)(Phen) (dibenzoylmethanate, dbm; 1,10-phenanthroline, Phen) on glass/ indium tin oxide (ITO)/3,4-polyethylene-dioxythiophene-polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT) substrates. Saturated red europium ion emission, based on the (5)Do ->F-7(2) transition, is centered at a wavelength of 612 nm with a full width at half maximum of 3.5 rim. A maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.3 x 10(-2) cd/A (3.1 X 10(-2)%) and a maximum luminance of 130 cd/M-2 at 400 mA/cm(2) and 25 V is measured for ITO/PEDOT/PVK:Eu(dbM)3(Phen)/Ca/Al devices. This measured output luminance is comparable to that of devices fabricated using more sophisticated small molecule evaporation techniques. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

NDRG1 is phosphorylated by SGK1 (but not PKB) in vivo at three residues each contained within three nonapeptide repeats. Here, we demonstrate that this nonapeptide, like the NDRG1 protein, is phosphorylated by SGK1, but not by PKBalpha or RSK1 in vitro. The inability of PKBa and RSK1 to phosphorylate the nonapeptide was traced to residues n + 1, n + 2 and n - 4 (where n is the phosphorylation site). Changing them from Ser, Glu and Ser to Phe, Ala and Pro, respectively, transformed the nonapeptide into an excellent substrate for PKBalpha and RSK1. Our results identify a specific substrate for SGK1 and may facilitate detection of additional physiological substrates for this enzyme. (C) 2005 Federation of European Biochemical Societies. Undoped and cobalt-doped (1-4 wt.%) ZnO polycrystalline, thin films have been fabricated on quartz substrates using sequential spin-casting and annealing of simple salt solutions. X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals a wurzite ZnO crystalline structure with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showing lattice planes of separation 0.26 nm, characteristic of (002) planes. The Co appears to be tetrahedrally co-ordinated in the lattice on the Zn sites (XRD) and has a charge of + 2 in a high-spin electronic state (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). Co-doping does not alter the wurzite structure and there is no evidence of the precipitation of cobalt oxide phases within the limits of detection of Raman and XRD analysis. Lattice defects and chemisorbed oxygen are probed using photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy - crucially, however, this transparent semiconductor material retains a bandgap in the ultraviolet (3.30-3.48 eV) and high transparency (throughout the visible spectral regime) across the doping range. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The selective hydrogenation of ,-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones has been studied using ketoisophorone and cinnamaldehyde as model substrates using manganese oxide octahedral molecular sieve (OMS-2) based catalysts. For the first time, OMS-2 has been shown to be an efficient and selective hydrogenation catalyst. High selectivities for either the CC or CO double bond at approximate to 100% conversion were achieved by using OMS-2 and platinum supported on OMS-2 catalysts. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the dissociation of H2 on OMS-2 was water assisted and occurred on the surface Mn of OMS-2(001) that had been modified by an adsorbed H2O molecule. The theoretically calculated activation barrier was in good agreement with the experimentally determined value for the hydrogenation reactions, indicating that H2 dissociation on OMS-2 is likely to be the rate-determining step. A significant increase in the rate of reaction was observed in the presence of Pt as a result of the enhancement of H2 dissociative adsorption and subsequent reaction on the Pt or spillover of the hydrogen to the OMS-2 support. The relative adsorption strengths of ketoisophorone and cinnamaldehyde on the OMS-2 support compared with the Pt were found to determine the product selectivity.

The quality of single crystal diamond obtained by microwave CVD processes has been drastically improved in the last 5 years thanks to surface pretreatment of the substrates [A. Tallaire, J. Achard, F. Silva, R.S. Sussmann, A. Gicquel, E. Rzepka, Physica Status Solidi (A) 201, 2419-2424 (2004); G. Bogdan, M. Nesladek, J. D'Haen, J. Maes, V.V. Moshchalkov, K. Haenen, M. D'Olieslaeger, Physica Status Solidi (A) 202, 2066-2072 (2005); M. Yamamoto, T. Teraji, T. Ito, Journal of Crystal Growth 285, 130-136 (2005)]. Additionally, recent results have unambiguously shown the occurrence of (110) faces on crystal edges and (113) faces on crystal corners [F. Silva, J. Achard, X. Bonnin, A. Michau, A. Tallaire, O. Brinza, A. Gicquel, Physica Status Solidi (A) 203, 3049-3055 (2006)]. We have developed a 3D geometrical growth model to account for the final crystal morphology. The basic parameters of this growth model are the relative displacement speeds of (111), (110) and (113) faces normalized to that of the (100) faces, respectively alpha, beta, and gamma. This model predicts both the final equilibrium shape of the crystal (i.e. after infinite growth time) and the crystal morphology as a function of alpha, beta, gamma, and deposition time.
An optimized operating point, deduced from the model, has been validated experimentally by measuring the growth rate in (100), (111), (110), and (113) orientations. Furthermore, the evolution of alpha, beta, gamma as a function of methane concentration in the gas discharge has been established. From these results, crystal growth strategies can be proposed in order, for example, to enlarge the deposition area. In particular, we will show, using the growth model, that the only possibility to significantly increase the deposition area is, for our growth conditions, to use a (113) oriented substrate. A comparison between the grown crystal and the model results will be discussed and characterizations of the grown film (Photoluminescence spectroscopy, EPR, SEM) will be presented. The position-dependent oxygen vacancy dynamics induced by a biased scanning probe microscopy tip in Samarium doped ceria thin films grown on MgO (100) substrates is investigated. The granularity of the samples gives rise to spatially dependent local electrochemical activity, as explored by electrochemical strain microscopy. The kinetics of the oxygen vacancy relaxation process is investigated separately for grain boundaries and grains. Higher oxygen vacancy concentration variation and slower diffusion are observed in the grain boundary regions as compared to the grains.

Epitaxial SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT) thin films with well-defined (001), (116), and (103) orientations have been grown by pulsed laser deposition on (001)-, (011)-, and (111)-oriented Nb-doped SrTiO3 substrates. X-ray diffraction pole figure and phi -scan measurements revealed that the three-dimensional epitaxial orientation relation SBT(001)parallel to SrTiO3(001), and SBT[1(1) over bar 0]parallel to SrTiO3[100] is valid for all cases of SET thin films on SrTiO3 substrates, irrespective of their orientations. Atomic force microscopy images of the c-axis-oriented SET revealed polyhedron-shaped grains showing spiral growth around screw dislocations. The terrace steps of the c-axis-oriented SET films were integral multiples of a quarter of the lattice parameter c of SBT (similar to 0.6 nm). The grains of (103)-oriented SET films were arranged in a triple-domain configuration consistent with the symmetry of the SrTiO3(111) substrate. The measured remanent polarization (2P(r)) and coercive field (2E(c)) of (116)-oriented SBT films were 9.6 muC/cm(2) and 168 kV/cm, respectively, for a maximum applied electric field of 320 kV/cm. Higher remanent polarization (2P(r)=10.4 muC/cm(2)) and lower coercive field (2E(c)=104 kV/cm) than those of SBT(116) films were observed in (103)-oriented SET thin films, and (001)-oriented SET revealed no ferroelectricity along the [001] axis. The dielectric constants of (001)-, (116)-, and (103)-oriented SBT were 133, 155, and 189, respectively. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics.

The growth mechanism of epitaxial BaTiO3 films on vicinal Nb-doped SrTiO3 (srTiO(3):Nb) (001) substrate surfaces was studied in terms of surface morphology, crystalline orientation, microstructure, and film/substrate interface. Well-oriented BaTiO3 thin films were grown on SrTiO3 substrates with well-defined terraces by pulsed laser deposition. The regularly terraced TiO2-terminated surfaces of vicinal SrTiO3:Nb (001) substrates were prepared by a definite chemical and thermal treatment. Under our conditions, BaTiO3 seems to grow with a layer-then-island (Stranski-Krastanov) growth mechanism. In order to investigate the orientation and crystallinity of the BaTiO3 films, x-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission election microscopy were performed. Ferroelectricity of the BaTiO3 films was proved by electrical measurements performed on Pt/BaTiO3/SrTiO3:Nb heterostructures.
