BACKGROUND: The genetic variation which underlies the thermolability and low enzyme activity of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR; C677T) has been extensively studied in many populations, including the Irish population.
AIM: To describe the examination of the C677T substitution in two new control samples drawn from the Irish population.
METHODS: A collection of 487 serum samples was obtained through the blood transfusion services of both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland and a further 115 samples from volunteers.
RESULTS: In both samples, the frequency of the thermolabile/low enzyme activity allele (T) was higher than that previously reported for the Irish population.
CONCLUSION: This finding thus supports the need for a greater use of internal control/family-based association studies, as opposed to the classic case control study design, when assessing the contribution of the MTHFR T allele to disease processes.

Intergroup contact theory proposes that positive interactions between members of different social groups can improve intergroup relations. Contact should be especially effective in schools, where opportunities may exist to engage cooperatively with peers from different backgrounds and develop cross-group friendships. In turn, these friendships have numerous benefits for intergroup relations. However, there is evidence that children do not always engage in cross-group friendships, often choosing to spend time with same-group peers, even in diverse settings. We argue that in order to capitalize on the potential impact of contact in schools for promoting harmonious intergroup relations, a new model is needed that places confidence in contact at its heart. We present an empirically driven theoretical model of intergroup contact that outlines the conditions that help to make young people contact ready, preparing them for successful, sustained intergroup relationships by giving them the confidence that they can engage in contact successfully. After evaluating the traditional approach to intergroup contact in schools, we present our theoretical model which outlines predictors of cross-group friendships that enhance confidence in and readiness for contact. We then discuss theory-driven, empirically tested interventions that could potentially promote confidence in contact. Finally, we make specific recommendations for practitioners and policy makers striving to promote harmonious intergroup relations in the classroom.

By combining density functional theory calculation and microkinetic analysis, NO oxidation on the platinum group metal oxides (PtO(2), IrO(2), OsO(2)) is investigated, aiming at shedding light on the activities of metal oxides and exploring the activity variations of metal oxides compared to their corresponding metals. A microkinetic model, taking into account the possible low diffusion of surface species on metal oxide surfaces, is proposed for NO oxidation. The resultant turnover frequencies of NO oxidation show that under the typical experimental condition, T = 600 K, p(O2) = 0.1 atm, p(NO) = 3 x 10(-4) atm, p(NO2) = 1.7 x 10(-4) atm; (i) IrO(2)(110) exhibits higher activity than PtO(2)(110) and OsO(2)(110), and (ii) compared to the corresponding metallic Pt, Ir, and Os, the activity of PtO(2) to catalyze NO oxidation is lower, but interestingly IrO(2) and OsO(2) exhibit higher activities. The reasons for the activity differences between the metals and oxides are addressed. Moreover, other possible reaction pathways of NO oxidation on PtO(2)(110), involving O(2) molecule (NO + O(2) -> OONO) and lattice bridge-O(2c), are also found to give low activities. The origin of the Pt catalyst deactivation is also discussed.

Freshly dispersed cells from sheep urinary bladder were voltage clamped using the whole cell and inside-out patch-clamp technique. Cibacron and Basilen blue increased outward current in a dose-dependent manner with a half-maximal response at 10(-5) M. Suramin, in concentrations to 10(-3) M, had no such effect. The Cibacron blue response was abolished in Ca2+-free physiological salt solution, suggesting that it was acting on a Ca2+-dependent current. Similarly, the Cibacron blue-sensitive current was significantly attenuated by charybdotoxin. Cibacron blue did not modulate inward current nor were its effects modified by caffeine or heparin, suggesting that its effect on outward current was not secondary to an increase in intracellular Ca2+. Application of 10(-4) M Cibacron blue to the inside membrane of excised patches caused a rapid increase in open probability of a large-conductance (300 pS) K+ channel. These results suggest that Cibacron blue is a potent activator of a Ca2+-dependent outward current in bladder smooth muscle cells in addition to its action as a purinergic blocker.

We prove that under certain topological conditions on the set of universal elements of a continuous map T acting on a topological space X, that the direct sum T and M_g is universal, where M_g is multiplication by a generating element of a compact topological group. We use this result to characterize R_+-supercyclic operators and to show that whenever T is a supercyclic operator and z_1,...,z_n are pairwise different non-zero complex numbers, then the operator z_1T\oplus ... \oplus z_n T is cyclic. The latter answers affirmatively a question of Bayart and Matheron.

It is remarkable how the classical Volterra integral operator, which was one of the first operators which attracted mathematicians' attention, is still worth of being studied. In this essentially survey work, by collecting some of the very recent results related to the Volterra operator, we show that there are new (and not so new) concepts that are becoming known only at the present days. Discovering whether the Volterra operator satisfies or not a given operator property leads to new methods and ideas that are useful in the setting of Concrete Operator Theory as well as the one of General Operator Theory. In particular, a wide variety of techniques like summability kernels, theory of entire functions, Gaussian cylindrical measures, approximation theory, Laguerre and Legendre polynomials are needed to analyze different properties of the Volterra operator. We also include a characterization of the commutator of the Volterra operator acting on L-P[0, 1], 1

There is conflicting evidence concerning lithium’s effect on renal function. The aim is to clarify whether lithium affects kidney function and at what stage of treatment any effect may occur. Systematic review identified 23 studies split into three groups on which meta-analysis was performed to identify the following: A) lithium’s effect on renal function in cross-sectional case-control studies, B) studies of renal function before and after commencement on lithium, C) studies of longer term effect in those already established on lithium therapy. Group A showed a statistically significant increase of 5.7 µmol/L in creatinine in the study population compared with controls. Group B showed a non-statistically significant rise in creatinine (2.9 µmol/L) after a mean follow-up of 86 months. Group C showed a statistically significant increase in creatinine of 7.0 µmol/L over a mean duration of 64 months. An increase in creatinine of an average of 1.6 µmol/L/year on lithium was also identified in this group. Any lithium-associated increase in serum creatinine is quantitatively small and of questionable clinical significance. However, routine renal function monitoring of patients on lithium is essential.

Let D be the differentiation operator Df = f' acting on the Fréchet space H of all entire functions in one variable with the standard (compact-open) topology. It is known since the 1950’s that the set H(D) of hypercyclic vectors for the operator D is non-empty. We treat two questions raised by Aron, Conejero, Peris and Seoane-Sepúlveda whether the set H(D) contains (up to the zero function) a non-trivial subalgebra of H or an infinite-dimensional closed linear subspace of H. In the present article both questions are answered affirmatively.

We show that for every supercyclic strongly continuous operator
semigroup $\{T_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ acting on a complex $\F$-space, every
$T_t$ with $t>0$ is supercyclic. Moreover, the set of supercyclic
vectors of $T_t$ does not depend on the choice of $t>0$.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore accountability from the perspective of charity donors.
Design/methodology/approach – The research utilises semi-structured interviews with a range of donors. In addition, it summarises the main findings from key related research (that uses document content analysis and questionnaire surveys) as a basis for better appreciating donor engagement.
Findings – This research offers evidence that while donors are viewed as the key stakeholder to whom a charity should be accountable, the relevance of the information commonly disclosed in formal charity communications is questionable. This is viewed as significant in terms of small dependent donors, although less critical in the case of non-dependent large donors who have power to demand individualised information. However, although all donors do not particularly engage with these formal communications, they are viewed by them as having significance and their production and publication serves as an important legitimising tool in the sector (enhancing trust and reputation).
Research limitations/implications – This research is based on semi-structured interviews with individual small donors and large institutional donors to large UK charities and therefore any generalising of the conclusions beyond large charities, and beyond the UK, should be undertaken with care. In addition, it focuses solely on the perceptions of donors, and other stakeholder groups are also important in this process.
Originality/value – Despite the widespread acceptance that charities have a duty to discharge accountability to their stakeholders, there is limited knowledge of their information needs and whether the performance information currently being disclosed fulfils them. This study provides a unique insight into the perspective of a key stakeholder group (donors) with respect to accountability.

Paradoxical kinesia describes the motor improvement in Parkinson's disease (PD) triggered by the presence of external sensory information relevant for the movement. This phenomenon has been puzzling scientists for over 60 years, both in neurological and motor control research, with the underpinning mechanism still being the subject of fierce debate. In this paper we present novel evidence supporting the idea that the key to understanding paradoxical kinesia lies in both spatial and temporal information conveyed by the cues and the coupling between perception and action. We tested a group of 7 idiopathic PD patients in an upper limb mediolateral movement task. Movements were performed with and without a visual point light display, travelling at 3 different speeds. The dynamic information presented in the visual point light display depicted three different movement speeds of the same amplitude performed by a healthy adult. The displays were tested and validated on a group of neurologically healthy participants before being tested on the PD group. Our data show that the temporal aspects of the movement (kinematics) in PD can be moderated by the prescribed temporal information presented in a dynamic environmental cue. Patients demonstrated a significant improvement in terms of movement time and peak velocity when executing movement in accordance with the information afforded by the point light display, compared to when the movement of the same amplitude and direction was performed without the display. In all patients we observed the effect of paradoxical kinesia, with a strong relationship between the perceptual information prescribed by the biological motion display and the observed motor performance of the patients. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. The understanding of rock breaking and chipping due to the TBM cutter disks mechanism in deep tunnels is considered in this paper. The interest stems from the use of TBMs for the excavation of long Trans-Alpine tunnels. Some tests that simulate the disk cutter action at the tunnel face by means of an indenter, acting on a rock specimen are proposed. The rock specimen is confined through a flat-jack and a confinement-free area on one side of the specimen simulates the formation of a groove near the indenter, like it occurs in TBM excavation conditions. Results show a limited influence of the confinement stress versus the thrust increment required for breaking the rock between the indenter and the free side of the specimen. Numerical modelling of the cutter disk action on confined material has also been carried out in order to investigate further aspects of the fracture initiation. Also in this case the importance of the relative position between disk cutter and groove is pointed out. © 2006 Springer-Verlag.

To clarify some aspects of rock destruction with a disc acting on a high confined tunnel face, a series of tests were carried out to examine fracture mechanisms under an indenter that simulates the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tool action, in the presence of an adjacent groove, when a state of stress (lateral confinement) is imposed on a rock sample. These tests proved the importance of carefully establishing the optimal distance of grooves produced by discs acting on a confined surface, and the value (as a mere order of magnitude) of the increase of the thrust to produce the initiation of chip formation, as long as the confinement pressure becomes greater. © University of Science and Technology Beijing and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.

Driven by the requirements of the bionic joint or tracking equipment for the spherical parallel manipulators (SPMs) with three rotational degrees-of-freedom (DoFs), this paper carries out the topology synthesis of a class of three-legged SPMs employing Lie group theory. In order to achieve the intersection of the displacement subgroups, the subgroup characteristics and operation principles are defined in this paper. Mainly drawing on the Lie group theory, the topology synthesis procedure of three-legged SPMs including four stages and two functional blocks is proposed, in which the assembly principles of three legs are defined. By introducing the circular track, a novel class of three-legged SPMs is synthesized, which is the important complement to the existing SPMs. Finally, four typical examples are given to demonstrate the finite displacements of the synthesized three-legged SPMs.
