The hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene over supported palladium catalysts has been studied. The palladium catalysts: deactivate as the reaction proceeds due to the HCl formed as by-product. The effect of the addition of sodium compounds has been analysed for the neutralisation of HCl. When NaOH was added to the reaction mixture, no beneficial effect was observed due to the detrimental effect of the alkaline medium on the textural and metallic properties of the catalysts. Doping the support with NaOH prior to impregnation with the metal precursor leads (after calcination and reduction) to catalysts with better activity and tolerance to deactivation, especially those obtained when using PdCl2 as the metal precursor. Low metal dispersion and the capture of chloride by forming NaCl are the: main factors contributing to the: improved catalytic properties. Finally, doping the catalysts with NaOH or NaNO3, after reduction of the metal precursor leads to a moderate increase in initial activity and final conversion, although NaOH impregnation also gave rise to support corrosion and metal dispersion modification. The electrochemical oxidation of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium nitrate [C(4)mim][NO3] was studied by cyclic voltammetry in the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide [C(2)mim][NTf2]. A sharp peak was observed on a Pt microelectrode (d = 10 mu m), and a diffusion coefficient at infinite dilution of ca. 2.0 x 10(-11) m(2) s(-1) was obtained. Next, the cyclic voltammetry of sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and potassium nitrate (KNO3) was studied, by dissolving small amounts of solid into the RTIL [ C2mim][ NTf2]. Similar oxidation peaks were observed, revealing diffusion coefficients of ca. 8.8 and 9.0 x 10(-12) m(2) s(-1) and solubilities of 11.9 and 10.8 mM for NaNO3 and KNO3, respectively. The smaller diffusion coefficients for NaNO3 and KNO3 (compared to [C(4)mim][NO3]) may indicate that NO3- is ion-paired with Na+ or K+. This work may have applications in the electroanalytical determination of nitrate in RTIL solutions. Furthermore, a reduction feature was observed for both NaNO3 and KNO3, with additional anodic peaks indicating the formation of oxides, peroxides, superoxides and nitrites. This behaviour is surprisingly similar to that obtained from melts of NaNO3 and KNO3 at high temperatures ( ca. 350 - 500 degrees C), and this observation could significantly simplify experimental conditions required to investigate these compounds. We then used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to suggest that disodium( I) oxide (Na2O), which has found use as a storage compound for hydrogen, was deposited on a Pt electrode surface following the reduction of NaNO3.

Organic gels have been synthesized by sol–gel polycondensation of phenol (P) and formaldehyde (F) catalyzed by sodium carbonate (C). The effect of synthesis parameters such as phenol/catalyst ratio (P/C), solvent exchange liquid and drying method, on the porous structure of the gels have been investigated. The total and mesopore volumes of the PF gels increased with increasing P/C ratio in the range of P/C B 8, after this both properties started to decrease with P/C ratio for P/C[8 and the gel with P/C = 8 showed the highest total and mesopore volumes of 1.281 and 1.279 cm3 g-1 respectively. The gels prepared by freeze drying possessed significantly higher porosities than the vacuum dried gels. The pore volume and average pore diameter of the freeze dried gels were significantly higher than those of the vacuum dried gels. T-butanol emerged as the preferred solvent for the removal of water from the PF hydrogel prior to drying, as significantly higher pore volumes and specific surface areas were obtained in the corresponding dried gels. The results showed that freeze drying with t-butanol and lower P/C ratios were favourable conditions for the synthesis of highly mesoporous phenol–formaldehyde gels.

A simple, new method permitting the simultaneous determination and confirmation of trace residues of 24 different growth promoters and metabolites using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry was developed and validated. The compounds were extracted from bovine tissue using acetonitrile; sodium sulphate was also added at this stage to aid with purification. The resulting mixture was then evaporated to approximately 1 ml and subsequently centrifuged at high speed and an aliquot injected onto the LC-MS/MS system. The calculated CC values ranged between 0.11 and 0.46 mu g kg-1; calculated CC were in the range 0.19-0.79 mu g kg-1. Accuracy, measurement of uncertainty, repeatability and linearity were also determined for each analyte. The analytical method was applied to a number of bovine tissue samples imported into Ireland from third countries. Levels of progesterone were found in a number of samples at concentrations ranging between 0.28 and 30.30 mu g kg-1. Levels of alpha- and beta-testosterone were also found in a number of samples at concentrations ranging between 0.22 and 8.63 mu g kg-1 and between 0.16 and 2.08 mu g kg-1 respectively.

An LC/MS/MS method was developed and validated for the simultaneous identification, confirmation, and quantification of 12 glucocorticoids in bovine milk. The method was validated in accordance with the criteria defined in Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. The developed method can detect and confirm the presence of dexamethasone, betamethasone, prednisolone, flumethasone, 6 alpha-methylprednisolone, fluorometholone, triamcinolone acetonide, prednisone, cortisone, hydrocortisone, clobetasol propionate, and clobetasol butyrate in bovine milk. Milk samples are extracted with acetonitrile; sodium chloride is subsequently added to aid partition of the milk and acetonitrile mixture. The acetonitrile extract is then subjected to liquid-liquid purification by the addition of hexane. The purified extract is evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in a water acetonitrile mixture, and determination is carried out by LC/MS/MS. The method permits analysis of up to 30 samples in 1 day.

A rapid liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method has been developed and validated for the simultaneous identification, confirmation and quantitation of seven licensed anti-inflammatory drugs (AIDS) in bovine milk. The method was validated in accordance with the criteria defined in Commission Decision 2002/657/EC. Two classes of AIDS were investigated, corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The developed method is capable of detecting and confirming dexamethasone (DXM), betamethasone (BTM), prednisolone (FRED), tolfenamic acid (TV), 5-hydroxy flunixin (5-OH-FLU). meloxicam (MLX) and 4-methyl amino antipyrine (4-MAA) at their associated maximum residue limits (MRLs). These compounds represent all the corticosteroids and NSAIDs licensed for use in bovine animals producing milk for human consumption. These compounds have never been analysed before in the same method and also 4-methyl amino antipyrine has never been analysed with the other licensed NSAIDs. The method can be considered rapid as permits the analysis of up to 30 samples in one day. Milk samples are extracted with acetonitrile; sodium chloride is added to aid partition of the milk and acetonitrile mixture. The acetonitrile extract is then subjected to liquid-liquid purification by the addition of hexane. The purified extract is finally evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in a water/acetonitrile mixture and determination is carried out by LC-MS/MS. Decision limit (CC alpha) values and detection capability (CC beta) values have been established for each compound. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
