The prediction of molar volumes and densities of several ionic liquids has been achieved using a group contribution model as a function of temperature between (273 and 423) K at atmospheric pressure. It was observed that the calculation of molar volumes or densities could be performed using the "ideal" behavior of the molar volumes of mixtures of ionic liquids. This model is based on the observations of Canongia Lopes et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 3519-3525) which showed that this ideal behavior is independent of the temperature and allows the molar volume of a given ionic liquid to be calculated by the sum of the effective molar volume of the component ions. Using this assumption, the effective molar volumes of ions constituting more than 220 different ionic liquids were calculated as a function of the temperature at 0.1 MPa using more than 2150 data points. These calculated results were used to build up a group contribution model for the calculation of ionic liquid molar volumes and densities with an estimated repeatability and uncertainty of 0.36% and 0.48%, respectively. The impact of impurities (water and halide content) in ionic liquids as well as the method of determination were also analyzed and quantified to estimate the overall uncertainty. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

CAN 120:164608 AN 1994:164608 CAPLUS (Copyright (C) 2009 ACS on SciFinder (R)) Abstract The alkaloid homaline I was prepd. in (?) and natural (S,S)-(-) forms. Linking of 2-azacyclooctanone units either directly or successively using 1,4-dihalogenobutanes or 1,4-dihalogenobut-2-ynes is examd. (?)-5-Methyl-4-phenyl-1,5-diazacyclooctan-2-one is first made by a 2,2'-dithiodipyridine/triphenylphosphine-mediated cyclization, and then by amination and transamidative ring expansion from N-(3-chloropropyl)-4-phenylazetidin-2-one in liq. ammonia, followed by N-methylation. Coupling through a 1,4-dihalogenobutane of either the N-methylated azalactam, or the unmethylated azalactam followed by methylation, gave homaline in (?) and meso forms. (R)-(-)-phenylglycine was converted via (S)-?-phenyl-?-alanine into an (S)-?-lactam which was then alkylated with 1-bromo-3-chloropropane, and aminated and ring expanded in liq. ammonia. Coupling of the homochiral azalactam (2 mol) so formed with 1,4-dibromobutane, followed by N-methylation, gave (S,S)-(-)-homaline identical with the natural material.

N-(3-Halogenopropyl)-4-phenylazetidin-2-ones undergo amination in liquid ammonia followed by transamidative ring expansion to give the eight-membered 4-phenyl -1,5-diazacyclooctan-2-one in excellent yield. Ring expansion of the amines in liquid ammonia is found to be much more effective than in hydrocarbon solvents. Formation of 7-, 8-, and 9-membered azalactams from the requisite -halogenoalkyl--lactams is an excellent synthetic process, though it is not applicable to 10membered rings. In the cases of rings of 13-, 15- and 17-members, although amination and apparent expansion takes place, the large rings appear not to be stable to ammonia and the final products are acyclic amides. N-[4-Halogenobut-2(Z)-enyl]-4-phenylazetidin-2-one satisfactorily forms a 9-membered (Z)-olefinic azalactam, but the (E)-isomer gives an acyclic amino amide. By using alkyl-substituted -lactam side-chains, C-substituted medium rings can be obtained; the relative instability of N-acyl -lactams to ammonia, however, leads to acylamino amides rather than expanded rings.Employing ethylamine in place of ammonia, it is shown that N-ethylated azalactams are formed satisfactorily, and using allylamine, N-allyl medium rings capable of further elaboration are obtained. The chemistry of these systems is discussed. Using transamidation in liquid ammonia, a short synthesis of the 9-membered spermidine alkaloid (±)-dihydroperiphylline is reported. Synthesis of key intermediates, whose transformation into the 13-membered alkaloids of the celabenzine group has already been effected, has been carried out.X-Ray single-crystal structure determinations for 4-phenyl-1,5-diazacyclononan-2-one, trans-4-phenyl-8-methyl-1,5-diazacyclooctan-2-one and (Z)-4-phenyl-1,5-diazacyclonon-7-en-2-one are reported, and comment is made on certain conformational features.

The density of ionic liquids (ILs) as a function of pressure and temperature has been modeled using a group contribution model. This model extends the calculations previously reported (Jacquemin et al. J. Chem. Eng. Data 2008) which used 4000 IL densities at 298.15 K and 600 IL densities as a function of temperature up to 423 K at 0.1 MPa to pressures up to 207 MPa by using described data in the literature and presented in this study. The densities of two different ionic liquids (butyltrimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [N][NTf], and 1-butyl-l-methyl-pyrrolidiniumbis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [C mPyrro]-[NTf]) were measured as a function of temperature from (293 to 415) K and over an extended pressure range from (0.1 to 40) MPa using a vibrating-tube densimeter. The model is able to predict the ionic liquid densities of over 5080 experimental data points to within 0.36%. In addition, this methodology allows the calculation of the mechanical coefficients using the calculated density as a function of temperature and pressure with an estimated uncertainty of ± 20%. © 2008 American Chemical Society.

Introduction Product standardisation involves promoting the prescribing of pre-selected products within a particular category across a healthcare region and is designed to improve patient safety by promoting continuity of medicine use across the primary/secondary care interface, in addition to cost containment without compromising clinical care (i.e. maintaining safety and efficacy). Objectives To examine the impact of product standardisation on the prescribing of compound alginate preparations within primary care in Northern Ireland. Methods Data were obtained on alginate prescribing from the Northern Ireland Central Services Agency (Prescription Pricing Branch), covering a period of 43 months. Two standardisation promotion interventions were carried out at months 18 and 33. In addition to conventional statistical analyses, a simple interrupted time series analysis approach, using graphical interpretation, was used to facilitate interpretation of the data. Results There was a significant increase in the prescribed share of the preferred alginate product in each of the four health boards in Northern Ireland and a decrease in the cost per Defined Daily Dose for alginate liquid preparations overall. Compliance with the standardisation policy was, however, incomplete and was influenced to a marked degree by the activities of the pharmaceutical industry. The overall economic impact of the prescribing changes during the study was small (3.1%). Conclusion The findings suggested that product standardisation significantly influenced the prescribing pattern for compound alginate liquid preparations within primary care across Northern Ireland. © 2012 The Authors. Air- and water-stable 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate salts with the general formula [C-mim][BF] (n = 0-18) have been prepared by metathesis from the corresponding chloride or bromide salts. The salts have been characterised by H NMR and IR spectroscopy, microanalysis, polarising optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Those with short alkyl chains (n = 2-10) are isotropic ionic liquids at room temperature and exhibit a wide liquid range, whereas the longer chain analogues are low melting mesomorphic crystalline solids which display an enantiotropic smectic A mesophase. The thermal range of the mesophase increases with increasing chain length and in the case of the longest chain salt prepared, [C-mim][BF], the mesophase range is ca. 150°C.

The combination of ionic liquids (ILs) and supercritical CO2 (scCO2) allows efficient catalytic processes to be developed. Catalyst separation is generally a major challenge when enzymes or homogeneous organometallic catalysts are utilised for reactions, and IL–scCO2 systems address these separation problems, facilitating the recycling or continual use of the catalyst. Typically these systems involve a catalyst being dissolved in an IL and this is where it remains during the process, with scCO2 extracting the products from the IL (catalyst) phase. ILs and many catalysts are not soluble in scCO2 and this facilitates the clean separation of products from the catalyst and IL. When the pressure is reduced in a collection chamber, the scCO2 returns to CO2 gas and products can be obtained without contamination of catalyst or solvents. It is possible to operate IL–scCO2 systems in a continuous flow manner and this further improves the efficiency and industrial potential of these systems. This chapter will introduce the fundamental properties of these multiphase catalytic systems. It will also highlight key examples of catalytic processes from the academic literature which illustrate the benefits of utilising this combination of solvents for catalysis
