The mechanism of the dehydrogenation of tetrahydrocarbazole to carbazole over palladium has been examined for the first time. By use of a combination of deuterium exchange experiments and density functional theory calculations, a detailed reaction profile for the aromatization of tetrahydrocarbazole has been identified and validated by experiment. As with many dehydrogenation reactions, the initial hydrogen abstraction is found to have the highest reaction barrier. Tetrahydrocarbazole has four hydrogens which can, in principle, be cleaved initially; however, the theory and experiment show that the reaction is dominated by the cleavage of the carbon hydrogens at the carbon atoms in positions 1 and 4. The two pathways originating from these two C-H bond cleavage processes are found to have similar reaction energy profiles and both contribute to the overall reaction.

A hyperthermal hydrogen/deuterium atom beam source with a defined energy distribution has been employed to investigate the kinetically induced electron emission from noble metal surfaces. A monotonous increase in the emission yield was found for energies between 15 and 200 eV. This, along with an observed isotope effect, is described in terms of a model based on Boltzmann type electron energy distributions.

Near-infrared diffuse tomography was used in order to observe dynamic behaviour of flowing gases by measuring the 3D distributions of composition and temperature in a weakly scattering packed bed reactor, subject to wall effects and non-isothermal conditions. The technique was applied to the vapour phase hydrogen isotopic exchange reaction in a hydrophobic packing of low aspect ratio made of platinum on styrene divinyl benzene sulphonate copolymer resin. The results of tomography revealed uneven temperature and composition maps of water and deuterated water vapours in the core-packed bed and in the vicinity of the wall owing to flow maldistribution. The dynamic lag between the near-wall water vapour and deuterated water vapour compositions were observed suggesting that the convective transfer which was significant near the wall at the start, owing to high porosity, was also effective at large conversions.

We present the fifth release of the UMIST Database for Astrochemistry (UDfA). The new reaction network contains 6173 gas-phase
reactions, involving 467 species, 47 of which are new to this release. We have updated rate coefficients across all reaction types.
We have included 1171 new anion reactions and updated and reviewed all photorates. In addition to the usual reaction network, we
also now include, for download, state-specific deuterated rate coefficients, deuterium exchange reactions and a list of surface binding
energies for many neutral species. Where possible, we have referenced the original source of all new and existing data. We have tested
the main reaction network using a dark cloud model and a carbon-rich circumstellar envelope model. We present and briefly discuss
the results of these models.

A counterintuitive scheme to produce ultracold hydrogen via fragmentation of laser cooled diatomic hydrides is presented where the final atomic H temperature is inversely proportional to the mass of the molecular parent. In addition, the critical density for formation of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) at a fixed temperature is reduced by a factor (mH/mMH)3/2 over directly cooled hydrogen atoms. The narrow Feshbach resonances between a S01 atom and hydrogen are well suited to a tiny center of mass energy release necessary during fragmentation. With the support of ab initio quantum chemistry, it is demonstrated that BaH is an ideal diatomic precursor that can be laser cooled to a Doppler temperature of ∼26μK with just two rovibronic transitions, the simplest molecular cooling scheme identified to date. Preparation of a hydrogen atom gas below the critical BEC temperature Tc is feasible with present cooling technology, with optical pulse control of the condensation process.

The Galactic Centre is the most active and heavily processed region of the Milky Way, so it can be used as a stringent test for the abundance of deuterium (a sensitive indicator of conditions in the first 1,000 seconds in the life of the Universe). As deuterium is destroyed in stellar interiors, chemical evolution models 1 predict that its Galactic Centre abundance relative to hydrogen is D/H = 5 x 10(-12), unless there is a continuous source of deuterium from relatively primordial (low-metallicity) gas. Here we report the detection of deuterium (in the molecule DCN) in a molecular cloud only 10 parsecs from the Galactic Centre. Our data, when combined with a model of molecular abundances, indicate that D/H = (1.7 +/- 0.3) x 10(-6), five orders of magnitude larger than the predictions of evolutionary models with no continuous source of deuterium. The most probable explanation is recent infall of relatively unprocessed metal-poor gas into the Galactic Centre (at the rate inferred by Wakker(2)). Our measured D/H is nine times less than the local interstellar value, and the lowest D/H observed in the Galaxy. We conclude that the observed Galactic Centre deuterium is cosmological, with an abundance reduced by stellar processing and mixing, and that there is no significant Galactic source of deuterium.

Recent advances in the study of quantum vibrations and rotations in the fundamental hydrogen molecules are reported. Using the deuterium molecules (D-2(+) and D-2) as exemplars, the application of ultrafast femtosecond pump-probe experiments to study the creation and time-resolved imaging of coherent nuclear wavepackets is discussed. The ability to study the motion of these fundamental molecules in the time-domain is a notable milestone, made possible through the advent of ultrashort intense laser pulses with durations on sub-vibrational (and sub-rotational) timescales. Quantum wavepacket revivals are characterised for both vibrational and rotational degrees of freedom and quantum models are used to provide a detailed discussion of the underlying ultrafast physical dynamics for the specialist and non-specialist alike. This paper presents the results of a model of the chemistry of deuterium-bearing molecules in hot molecular cores. It is found that because hydrogen- and deuterium-bearing molecules are destroyed by the same reactions at about the same rates, the initial fractionation present in ice mantles persists for over 10(4) yr. This is the case for a wide range of physical conditions, so it is safe to infer the fractionation on grain surfaces from observations of deuterated molecules in hot cores. The implications of the observed abundances of deuterium-bearing species in Orion are then discussed.

Electron energy probability functions measured with a passively compensated Langmuir probe in asymmetric capacitively coupled hydrogen and deuterium plasmas exhibit structure. The otherwise relatively continuous distribution appears to have an abrupt peak in electron density near 5 eV. This structure occurs at a higher energy in deuterium than hydrogen and there is a correlation between floating potential and the voltage at which the structure is observed in the second derivative of the I(V) characteristic. While the cause of the structure has yet to be clarified, spectroscopic observations and computer-based hydrogen models indicate that the high energy tail of the distribution is strongly modulated during the radio frequency cycle. The effect of this modulation on plasma properties and probe measurements has yet to be explored. (C) 1999 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(99)00819-0].

An approximate Kohn-Sham (KS) exchange potential v(xsigma)(CEDA) is developed, based on the common energy denominator approximation (CEDA) for the static orbital Green's function, which preserves the essential structure of the density response function. v(xsigma)(CEDA) is an explicit functional of the occupied KS orbitals, which has the Slater v(Ssigma) and response v(respsigma)(CEDA) potentials as its components. The latter exhibits the characteristic step structure with "diagonal" contributions from the orbital densities \psi(isigma)\(2), as well as "off-diagonal" ones from the occupied-occupied orbital products psi(isigma)psi(j(not equal1)sigma). Comparison of the results of atomic and molecular ground-state CEDA calculations with those of the Krieger-Li-Iafrate (KLI), exact exchange (EXX), and Hartree-Fock (HF) methods show, that both KLI and CEDA potentials can be considered as very good analytical "closure approximations" to the exact KS exchange potential. The total CEDA and KLI energies nearly coincide with the EXX ones and the corresponding orbital energies epsilon(isigma) are rather close to each other for the light atoms and small molecules considered. The CEDA, KLI, EXX-epsilon(isigma) values provide the qualitatively correct order of ionizations and they give an estimate of VIPs comparable to that of the HF Koopmans' theorem. However, the additional off-diagonal orbital structure of v(xsigma)(CEDA) appears to be essential for the calculated response properties of molecular chains. KLI already considerably improves the calculated (hyper)polarizabilities of the prototype hydrogen chains H-n over local density approximation (LDA) and standard generalized gradient approximations (GGAs), while the CEDA results are definitely an improvement over the KLI ones. The reasons of this success are the specific orbital structures of the CEDA and KLI response potentials, which produce in an external field an ultranonlocal field-counteracting exchange potential. Electron deficient active sites in Pd catalysts, either as films or on supports, are deliberately generated by calcining in O-2 at high temperature followed by the mildest possible reduction (with the reaction mixture itself), and are manifested by a marked shift from multiple to simple exchange in the cyclopentane/D-2 probe reaction.

We present observations of intense beams of energetic negative hydrogen ions and fast neutral hydrogen atoms in intense (5 × 10 W/cm) laser plasma interaction experiments, which were quantified in numerical calculations. Generation of negative ions and neutral atoms is ascribed to the processes of electron capture and loss by a laser accelerated positive ion in the collisions with a cloud of droplets. A comparison with a numerical model of charge exchange processes provides information on the cross section of the electron capture in the high energy domain.

Bimetallic catalyst system of ruthenium oxide (RuO) and niobium oxide (NbO) was prepared using the Adams method and the hydrolysis method. Physical and electrochemical characterizations of the catalysts were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammogram (CV) and polarization measurements. NbO addition to RuO was found to increase the stability of RuO. In Adams method the sodium nitrate was found to be forming complex with NbO at high temperature reaction. This makes Adams method unsuitable for the synthesis of RuO -NbO bimetallic system. Hydrolysis method on other hand does not have this problem. But a proper mixture of two oxides was not obtained in hydrolysis method. A lower crystallite size for bimetallic system was obtained with Adams method compared to hydrolysis method. RuO prepared by Adams method had higher activity compared to the hydrolysis counterpart in electrolyzer operation with nafion membrane. A cell voltage of 1.62 V was obtained with RuO (A) at 1 A/cm. A higher stability for RuNbO(A) compared to RuO(A) was observed in continuous cyclic voltammogram and electrolyzer cell test. Copyright © 2013, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC.
