Background: SPARCLE is a cross-sectional survey in nine European regions, examining the relationship of the environment of children with cerebral palsy to their participation and quality of life. The objective of this report is to assess data quality, in particular heterogeneity between regions, family and item non-response and potential for bias. Methods: 1,174 children aged 8–12 years were selected from eight population-based registers of children with cerebral palsy; one further centre recruited 75 children from multiple sources. Families were visited by trained researchers who administered psychometric questionnaires. Logistic regression was used to assess factors related to family non-response and self-completion of questionnaires by children. Results: 431/1,174 (37%) families identified from registers did not respond: 146 (12%) were not traced; of the 1,028 traced families, 250 (24%) declined to participate and 35 (3%) were not approached. Families whose disabled children could walk unaided were more likely to decline to participate. 818 children entered the study of which 500 (61%) self-reported their quality of life; children with low IQ, seizures or inability to walk were less likely to self-report. There was substantial heterogeneity between regions in response rates and socio-demographic characteristics of families but not in age or gender of children. Item non-response was 2% for children and ranged from 0.4% to 5% for questionnaires completed by parents. Conclusion: While the proportion of untraced families was higher than in similar surveys, the refusal rate was comparable. To reduce bias, all analyses should allow for region, walking ability, age and socio-demographic characteristics. The 75 children in the region without a population based register are unlikely to introduce bias

Directed Michaelis–Arbuzov reactions of support-bound internucleotide O-benzyl- or O-methyl-phosphite triesters with meta-phenylazobenzylamine or alkane-/glycol-linked a,x-diamines were effected in the presence of iodine. The corresponding tritylated phosphoramidate-linked 11-mers were fully deprotected and released from the support under standard conditions and the fast- and slow-diastereoisomers of both the E- and the Z-meta-phenylazobenzyl-appended oligomers were readily resolved by RP-HPLC. The primary amine-functionalised oligonucleotides were either purified, detritylated and then finally treated with Nhydroxysuccinimidyl carboxylic acid ester derivatives of photoswitchable moieties (Route A) or first derivatised and then subsequently purified and detritylated (Route B). This latter route enabled resolution of fast- and slow-isomers of the trityl-on oligomers bearing novel photoswitchable azopyridine or 9-alkoxyanthracene moieties using RP-HPLC, following which the pure diastereoisomers were detritylated and characterised by MALDI-MS.

Support vector machine (SVM) is a powerful technique for data classification. Despite of its good theoretic foundations and high classification accuracy, normal SVM is not suitable for classification of large data sets, because the training complexity of SVM is highly dependent on the size of data set. This paper presents a novel SVM classification approach for large data sets by using minimum enclosing ball clustering. After the training data are partitioned by the proposed clustering method, the centers of the clusters are used for the first time SVM classification. Then we use the clusters whose centers are support vectors or those clusters which have different classes to perform the second time SVM classification. In this stage most data are removed. Several experimental results show that the approach proposed in this paper has good classification accuracy compared with classic SVM while the training is significantly faster than several other SVM classifiers.

A rapid and sensitive screening qualitative method using a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor was developed which can detect of all fenicol antibiotic residues in shrimps from a single sample extract. This method requires ethyl acetate extraction followed by a single wash with isooctane/chlorofonrm. Each sample extract is injected over the surfaces of two biosensor chip flow cells, one surface having the capability to detect florefenicol amine (FF amine), florefenicol (FF), and thiamphenicol (TAP) and the second surface for chloramphenicol (CAP) detection. The estimated detection capabilities (CC beta) were 0. 1, 0.2, 250, and 0.5 ppb for CAP, FF, FF amine, and TAP, respectively. This quick, simple test allowed the detection of CAP residues in shrimps at the minimum required performance limit (MRPL) of 0.1 mu g kg(-1) for this compound and of FF, FF amine, and TAP below their maximum residue limits (MRLs). Proteomic tools-in particular, mass spectrometry (MS)-have advanced significantly in recent years, and the identification of proteins within complex mixtures is now a routine procedure. Quantitative methods of analysis are less well advanced and continue to develop. These include the use of stable isotope ratio approaches, isotopically labeled peptide standards, and nonlabeling methods. This paper summarizes the use of MS as a proteomics tool to identify and semiquantify proteins and their modified forms by using examples of relevance to the Maillard reaction. Finally, some challenges for the future are presented.

Heterogeneous immobilized ionic liquid catalysts were prepared via grafting of 1,3-dimethyl-3-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate or bist{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl} imide ([NTf2](-)) on silica supports with different surfaces and pore size. In addition to the adsorption-desorption isotherms of nitrogen at -196C, the catalysts were characterized by TG-DTA, XPS, DRIFTS, DR-UV-vis, NMR, and XRD techniques. The catalytic behavior was checked in the acylation of three different sulfonamines: benzenesulfonamine, p-nitrobenzene-sulfonamine, and p-methoxybenzene-sulfonamine with acetic acid, acetic anhydride and maleic anhydride. These tests confirmed the acid Lewis properties of these catalysts. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

CO multipulse temporal analysis of products (TAP) experiments were used to characterize a ceria-supported platinum catalyst after various oxidative and reductive pretreatments using O-2, H2O, CO2, and H-2. Based on the amount of CO consumed, using the final CO-saturated catalyst composition as the common state point, the oxidatively pretreated catalyst could be described using a general scale. From a kinetic analysis of the CO multipulse responses, two kinetic regimes corresponding to two types of active sites could be identified. As the temperature was raised, the number of the most active sites did not change while the amount of the less active site increased. Comparison of the number of active sites determined from the TAP data reported herein with that determined by a previous steady-state isotope transient kinetic analysis experiment showed excellent agreement. This correlation indicates that the (very fast response) TAP experiments can provide information regarding the number and type of active sites that are relevant to a catalyst under real reaction conditions. The reductions of nitrobenzene and 4-nitrophenol were studied by cyclic voltammetry in the room temperature ionic liquid 1-butyl2,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [C(4)dmim][N(Tf)(2)] on a gold microelectrode. Nitrobenzene was reduced reversibly by one electron and further by two electrons in a chemically irreversible step. The more complicated reduction of 4-nitrophenol revealed three reductive peaks (two irreversible and one reversible) which were successfully simulated using the digital simulation program DigiSim((R)) using a mechanism of rapid self-protonation, given below.

The significantly higher surface expression of the surface heat-shock protein receptor CD91 on monocytes of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1)-infected, long-term nonprogressors suggests that HIV-1 antigen uptake and cross-presentation mediated by CD91 may contribute to host anti-HIV-1 defenses and play a role in protection against HIV-1 infection. To investigate this further, we performed phenotypic analysis to compare CD91 surface expression on CD14+ monocytes derived from a cohort of HIV-1-exposed seronegative (ESN) subjects, their seropositive (SP) partners, and healthy HIV-1-unexposed seronegative (USN) subjects. The median fluorescent intensity (MFI) of CD91 on CD14+ monocytes was significantly higher in ESN compared with SP (P=0.028) or USN (P=0.007), as well as in SP compared with USN subjects (P=0.018). CD91 MFI was not normalized in SP subjects on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) despite sustainable, undetectable plasma viraemia. Data in three SP subjects experiencing viral rebounds following interruption of HAART showed low CD91 MFI comparable with levels in USN subjects. There was a significant positive correlation between CD91 MFI and CD8+ T cell counts in HAART-naïve SP subjects (r=0.7, P=0.015). Increased surface expression of CD91 on CD14+ monocytes is associated with the apparent HIV-1 resistance that is observed in ESN subjects.

Objectives: Cilostazol improves walking distance in peripheral arterial disease (PAD) patients. The study objectives were to assess the effects of cilostazol on walking distance, followed by the additional assessment of cilostazol on exercise-induced ischaemiaereperfusion injury in such patients.

Methods: PAD patients were prospectively recruited to a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Patients were randomised to receive either cilostazol 100 mg or placebo twice a day. The primary end-point was an improvement in walking distance. Secondary end-points included the assessment of oxygen-derived free-radical generation, antioxidant consumption and other markers of the in?ammatory cascade. Initial and absolute claudication distances (ICDs and ACDs, respectively) were measured on a treadmill. In?ammatory response was assessed before and 30 min post-exercise by measuring lipid hydroperoxide, ascorbate, atocopherol, b-carotene, P-selectin, intracellular and vascular cell-adhesion molecules (I-CAM and V-CAM), thromboxane B2 (TXB2), interleukin-6, interleukin-10, high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), albuminecreatinine ratio (ACR) and urinary levels of p75TNF receptor. All tests were performed at baseline and 6 and 24 weeks.

Results: One hundred and six PAD patients (of whom 73 were males) were recruited and successfully randomised from December 2004 to January 2006. Patients who received cilostazol demonstrated a more signi?cant improvement in the mean percentage change from baseline in ACD (77.2% vs. 26.6% at 6 weeks, pZ0.026 and 161.7% vs. 79.0% at 24 weeks, pZ0.048) as compared to the placebo. Cilostazol reduced lipid hydroperoxide levels compared to a placebo-related increase before and after exercise (6 weeks: pre-exercise: 11.8% vs.
