Epitaxial van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of organic and layered materials are demonstrated to create high-performance organic electronic devices. High-quality rubrene films with large single-crystalline domains are grown on h-BN dielectric layers via vdW epitaxy. In addition, high carrier mobility comparable to free-standing single-crystal counterparts is achieved by forming interfacial electrical contacts with graphene electrodes.

We report here the first systematic study of the effect of impurities and additives (e.g., water, chloride, and cosolvents) on the physical properties of room-temperature ionic liquids. Remarkably, it was discovered that the viscosity of mixtures was dependent mainly on the mole fraction of added molecular solvents and only to a lesser extent upon their identity, allowing viscosity changes during the course of a reaction to be entirely predictable. While the addition of such molecular solvents decreases the viscosity and density, chloride impurities, arising from the preparation of the ionic liquids, increase viscosity dramatically. The commonly used methods of preparation were validated with respect to chloride impurity.

Six challenges are discussed. These are the laser-driven helium atom; the laser-driven hydrogen molecule and hydrogen molecular ion: electron scattering (with ionization) from one-electron atoms; the vibrational and rotational structure of molecules such as H-3(+) and water at their dissociation limits; laser- heated clusters; and quantum degeneracy and Bose-Einstein condensation. The first four concern fundamental few-body systems where use of high-performance computing (HPC) is currently making possible accurate modelling from first principles. This leads to reliable predictions and support for laboratory experiment as well as true understanding of the dynamics. Important aspects of these challenges addressable only via a terascale facility are set out. Such a facility makes the last two challenges in the above list meaningfully accessible for the first time, and the scientific interest together with the prospective role for HPC in these is emphasized.

On the basis of comparative morphology and phylogenetic analyses of rbcL and LSU rDNA sequence data, a new genus, Gayliella gen. nov., is proposed to accommodate the Ceramium flaccidum complex (C. flaccidum, C. byssoideum, C. gracillimum var. byssoideum, and C. taylorii), C. fimbriatum, and a previously undescribed species from Australia. C. transversale is reinstated and recognized as a distinct species. Through this study, G. flaccida (Kutzing) comb. nov., G. transversalis (Collins et Hervey) comb. nov., G. fimbriata (Setchell et N. L. Gardner) comb. nov., G. taylorii comb. nov., G. mazoyerae sp. nov., and G. womersleyi sp. nov. are based on detailed comparative morphology. The species referred to as C. flaccidum and C. dawsonii from Brazil also belong to the new genus. Comparison of Gayliella with Ceramium shows that it differs from the latter by having an alternate branching pattern; three cortical initials per periaxial cell, of which the third is directed basipetally and divides horizontally; and unicellular rhizoids produced from periaxial cells. Our phylogenetic analyses of rbcL and LSU rDNA gene sequence data confirm that Gayliella gen. nov. represents a monophyletic clade distinct from most Ceramium species including the type species, C. virgatum. We also transfer C. recticorticum to the new genus Gayliella.

In vitro experiments have shown the PIM1 kinase to have diverse biological roles in cell survival, proliferation and differentiation. In humans, PIM1 is often expressed in both normal and transformed cells. The PIM1 kinase is a true oncogene implicated in early transformation and tumour progression in haematopoietic malignancies and prostate carcinomas. it is associated with aggressive subgroups of lymphoma, is a marker of poor prognosis in prostate carcinomas and has been suggested to have a role in hormone insensitivity of prostate malignancies. PIM1 has a possible role in other carcinomas with 6p21 genomic alterations. On one hand, PIM1 (due to its role in malignancy) appears to be a promising target for drug development programmes but, on the other hand, the complexity of its molecular structure has posed challenges in the development of PIM1 inhibitors. In this review we discuss PIM1 expression in human tissues (including some new data from our laboratory), its role in human malignancies, as well as the possibilities and challenges in the development of target therapy for PIM1. Although approximately 95% of patients with polycythemia vera (PV) harbor the V617F mutation in JAK2 exon 14, several mutations in exon 12 have been described in the remaining patients. We conducted a European collaborative study to define the molecular and clinical features of patients harboring these mutations. Overall, 106 PVs were recruited and 17 different mutations identified. Irrespective of the mutation, two-thirds of patients had isolated erythrocytosis, whereas the remaining subjects had erythrocytosis plus leukocytosis and/or thrombocytosis. Compared with JAK2 (V617F)-positive PV patients, those with exon 12 mutations had significantly higher hemoglobin level and lower platelet and leukocyte counts at diagnosis but similar incidences of thrombosis, myelofibrosis, leukemia, and death. In a multivariable analysis, age more than 60 years and prior thrombosis predicted thrombosis. These findings suggest that, despite the phenotypical difference, the outcome of JAK2 exon 12 mutations-positive PV is similar to that of JAK2 (V617F)positive PV. (Blood. 2011; 117(10):2813-2816)
