The closed orbits and the photo-excitation scaled spectrum of the hydrogen atom in crossed fields

In a recent Letter to the Editor (J Rao, D Delande and K T Taylor 2001 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 34 L391-9) we made a brief first report of our quantal and classical calculations for the hydrogen atom in crossed electric and magnetic fields at constant scaled energy and constant scaled electric field strength. A principal point of that communication was our statement that each and every peak in the Fourier transform of the scaled quantum photo-excitation spectrum for scaled energy value epsilon = -0.586 538 871028 43 and scaled electric value (f) over tilde = 0.068 537 846 207 618 71 could be identified with a scaled action value of a found and mapped-out closed orbit up to a scaled action of 20. In this follow-up paper, besides presenting full details of our quantum and classical methods, we set out the scaled action values of all 317 closed orbits involved, together with the geometries of many.

Electrically switchable nonreciprocal transmission of plasmonic nanorods with liquid crystal

The electro-optic response of a cell consisting of a thin layer of liquid crystal deposited onto gold nanorods embedded in thin film alumina with a transparent top electrode has been investigated. For p-polarized light incident from the liquid crystal side, the extinction peak associated with the nanorod longitudinal plasmon resonance is completely suppressed. The peak could be recovered by applying an external electric field parallel to the long axis of the nanorods. No extinction peak suppression is observed when the light was incident from the nanorod side of the cell. The effect is explained by polarization properties of liquid crystal.

Progressive loss of ferroelectricity under bipolar pulsed fields and experimental determination of non-switchable polarization in Au/Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3/SrRuO3 thin-film capacitors

175 nm-thick Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) thin film fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique is found to be a mixture of two distributions of material. We discuss whether these two components are nano-regions of paraelectric and ferroelectric phases, or a bimodal grain-size distribution, or an effect of oxygen vacancy gradient from the electrode interface. The fraction of switchable ferroelectric phase decreases under bipolar pulsed fields, but it recovers after removal of the external fields. The plot of capacitance in decreasing dc voltage (C(Vdown arrow) versus that in increasing dc 61 voltage C(Vup arrow) is a superposition of overlapping of two triangles, in contrast to one well-defined triangle for typical ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9 thin films.

Liquid-crystal-based reflectarray antenna with electronically switchable monopulse patterns

A printed rcflectarray antenna, which generates a beam that can be electronically switched from a sum to a difference radiation pattern, is presented. This is achieved by applying a bias voltage of 20 V to one-half of the aperture, which is constructed above a 500 mu m cavity containing liquid crystals. Simulated results are shown to be in good agreement with measurements at X-band.

FREQUENCY SELECTIVE SURFACE WITH DUAL BAND SWITCHABLE REFLECTION AND TRANSMISSION CHARACTERISTICS

A pin diode-loaded active doubly periodic flat strip FSS is shown to act as a dynamic screen. It is shown that by means of d.c. bias control, we can utilize the screen in, (1) transmission mode as a dual band electromagnetic shutter, or with the inclusion of a ground plane in reflection mode, (is (2) it dual band refection canceller. (3) an amplitude shift keying (ASK) spatial modulator. The properties of the FSS are characterized using a specially designed parallel plate waveguide simulator that permits normal incidence excitation of the FSS under test. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals. Green photochemistry: photo-Friedel-Crafts acylations of 1,4-naphthoquinone in room temperature ionic liquids

The photo-Friedel-Crafts acylation of 1,4-naphthoquinone with various aldehydes was investigated in a series of room temperature ionic liquids. High conversions and selectivities were achieved in [C(2)mim](+)-based ionic liquids with the highest isolated yields found in [C(2)mim][NTf2]. The developed procedure allowed for a replacement of hazardous solvents such as benzene and acetonitrile which are commonly used for this transformation.

RCS CONTROL USING CASCADED CIRCULARLY POLARIZED FREQUENCY SELECTIVE SURFACES AND AN AMC STRUCTURE AS A SWITCHABLE TWIST POLARIZER

This article presents a cascaded arrangement comprising a double-layer frequency selective surface circularly polarizing (CPFSS) and a second screen that can be switched between artificial magnetic conduction (AMC) or perfect electric conducting. (PEC) states. The CPFSS consists of two stacked aluminium sheets patterned with periodic split ring structures While the AMC is a PCB sheet patterned with metallic squares interconnected by links By either open or short circuiting these links it is shown that the cascade of screens can be made to twist, or not to twist, an incident 45 degrees linearly polirized signal through 90 degrees upon reflection from the assembly The system was designed and optimized using CST software and predictions were validated experimentally and measured monostatic reflection loss results (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Microwave Opt Technol Lett 52 577-580, 2010. Photo-double detachment from the F- ion

The correlated process of photodetaching two electrons from the F- ion following the absorption of a single photon has been investigated over an energy range 20-62 eV. In the experiment, a beam of photons from the Advanced Light Source was collinearly merged with a counter-propagating beam of F- ions from a sputter ion source. The F+ ions produced in the interaction region were detected, and the normalized signal was used to monitor the relative cross section for the double-detachment reaction. An absolute scale for the cross section was established by measuring the spatial overlap of the two beams and by determining the efficiency for collection and detection of the F+ ions. The measured cross section is compared with R-matrix and random phase approximation calculations. These calculations show that the Auger decay of the 2s2p(6) core-excited state of the F atom plays a minor role in the production of F+ ions and that double detachment is likely to be dominated by simultaneous correlated ejection of two valence electrons at energies well above threshold.

Home curation versus teenage photography: Photo displays in the family home

In this paper we report an empirical study of the photographic portrayal of family members at home. Adopting a social psychological approach and focusing oil intergenerational power dynamics, our research explores the use of domestic photo displays in family representation. Parents and their teenagers from eight families in the south of England were interviewed at home about their interpretations of both stored and displayed photos within the home. Discussions centred on particular photographs found by the participants to portray self and family in different ways. The findings show that public displays of digital photos are still curated by mothers of the households, but with more difficulty and less control all with analogue photos. In addition, teenagers both contribute and comply with this curation within the home, whilst at the same time developing additional ways of presenting their families and themselves online that are 'unsupervised' by the curator. We highlight the conflict of interest that is at play within teen and parent practices and consider the challenges that this presents for supporting the representation of family through the design of photo display technology.
