The optimization of interrelated deposition parameters during deposition of in situ YBa2Cu3O7 thin films on MgO substrates by KrF laser ablation was systematically studied in a single experimental chamber. The optimum condition was found to be a substrate temperature of 720-degrees-C and a target-substrate distance of 5 cm in an oxygen partial pressure of 100 mTorr. These conditions produced films with T(c) = 87 K. The presence of YO in the plasma plume was found to be important in producing good quality films. The films were characterized by resistance-temperature measurements, energy dispersive x-ray analyses, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray-diffraction measurements, and the physical reasons underlying film quality degradation at parameter values away from optimal are discussed.

Ni/K-MgO-ZrO catalysts for dry reforming of methane, with a range of Mg/Zr ratios and each containing about 10 wt% Ni, were prepared via Ni nitrate impregnation on MgO-ZrO supports synthesized by co-precipitation using KCO. It was found that a proportion of the potassium of the precipitant remained in the samples and improved the stability of the catalysts in the reaction. It was also shown that reduction of the catalysts at 1,023 K without calcination in air is necessary for stable and high activity; calcination in air at 1,073 K gives a deterioration of the catalytic properties, leading to rapid deactivation during the reaction. The order of the CH conversions of the reduced catalysts after 14 h on stream was as follows: Ni/K-MgZr ~ Ni/K-Mg ≥ Ni/K-MgZr Ni/K-Zr. A catalyst with 0.95 wt% K on MgO-ZrO with a Mg:Zr mole ratio of 5:2 showed the best resistance to deactivation. Experiments in a microbalance system showed that there was only negligible coke deposition on the surface of this sample. This behaviour was attributed to the presence of Ni nanoparticles with a diameter of less than 10 nm located on a MgO/NiO solid solution shell doped by K ions; this in turn covers a core of tetragonal ZrO and/or a MgO/ZrO solid solution. This conclusion was supported by EDS/TEM, XPS, XRD and H chemisorption measurements. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York.
Thickness-induced stabilization of ferroelectricity in SrRuO3/Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3/Au thin film capacitors
Resumo:
Pulsed-laser deposition has been used to fabricate Au/Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3/SrRuO3/MgO thin film capacitor structures. Crystallographic and microstructural investigations indicated that the Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST) had grown epitaxially onto the SrRuO3 lower electrode, inducing in-plane compressive and out- of-plane tensile strain in the BST. The magnitude of strain developed increased systematically as film thickness decreased. At room temperature this composition of BST is paraelectric in bulk. However, polarization measurements suggested that strain had stabilized the ferroelectric state, and that the decrease in film thickness caused an increase in remanent polarization. An increase in the paraelectric-ferroelectric transition temperature upon a decrease in thickness was confirmed by dielectric measurements. Polarization loops were fitted to Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire (LGD) polynomial expansion, from which a second order paraelectric-ferroelectric transition in the films was suggested at a thickness of similar to500 nm. Further, the LGD analysis showed that the observed changes in room temperature polarization were entirely consistent with strain coupling in the system. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

The dielectric properties of Au/[93%Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-7%PbTiO3] (PMN-PT)/(La0.5Sr0.5)CoO3/MgO thin-film capacitor heterostructures, made using pulsed laser deposition, have been investigated, with particular emphasis on the changes in response associated with increasing the magnitude of the ac measuring field. It was found that increasing the ac field caused a change in the frequency spectrum of relaxators, increasing the speed of response of "slow" relaxators, with an associated decrease in the freezing temperature (T-f) of the relaxor system; in addition, other characteristic parameters relating to polar relaxation (activation energy E-a and attempt frequency 1/tau(0)), described by fitting of the dielectric response to a Vogel-Fulcher expression, were found to change continuously as ac field levels were increased.

Pulsed laser deposition was used to make a series of Au/Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 (BST)/SrRuO3/MgO thin film capacitors with dielectric thickness ranging from similar to15 nm to similar to1 mum. Surface grain size of the dielectric was monitored as a function of thickness using both atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Grain size data were considered in conjunction with low field dielectric constant measurements. It was observed that the grain size decreased with decreasing thickness in a manner similar to the dielectric constant. Simple models were developed in which a functionally inferior layer at the grain boundary was considered as responsible for the observed dielectric behavior. If a purely columnar microstructure was assumed, then constant thickness grain-boundary dead layers could indeed reproduce the series capacitor dielectric response observed, even though such layers would contribute electrically in parallel with unaffected bulk- like BST. Best fits indicated that the dead layers would have a relative dielectric constant similar to40, and thickness of the order of tens of nanometers. For microstructures that were not purely columnar, models did not reproduce the observed dielectric behavior well. However, cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy indicated columnar microstructure, suggesting that grain boundary dead layers should be considered seriously in the overall dead-layer debate. Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) was used to make Au/(Ba0.5Sr0.5)TiO3/(La0.5Sr0.5) CoO3/MgO thin film capacitor structures. Functional properties were studied with changing BST thickness from similar to1265 nm to similar to63 nm. The dielectric constant was found to decrease, and migration of T-m (the temperature at which the dielectric constant is maximum) to lower temperatures occurred as thickness was reduced. Curie-Weiss plots of the as-obtained dielectric data, indicated that the Curie temperature was also systemmatically progressively depressed. Further, fitting to expressions previously used to describe diffuse phase transitions suggested increased diffuseness in transformation behaviour as film thickness decreased. This paper discusses the care needed in interpreting the observations given above. We make particular distinction between the apparent Curie-temperature derived from Curie-Weiss plots of as-measured data, and the inherent Curie temperature determined after correction for the interfacial capacitance. We demonstrate that while the apparent Curie temperature decreases as thickness decreases, the inherent Curie temperature is thickness independent. Thickness-invariant phase transition behaviour is confirmed from analysis of polarisation loops, and from examination of the temperature dependence of the loss-tangent. We particularly note that correction of data for interfacial capacitance does not alter the position of T-m. We must therefore conclude that the position of T-m is not related simply to phase transformation behaviour in BST thin films.

Thin lamellae were cut from bulk single crystal BaTiO3 using a Focused Ion Beam Microscope. They were then removed and transferred onto single crystal MgO substrates, so that their functional properties could be measured independent of the original host bulk ferroelectric. The temperature dependence of the capacitance of these isolated single crystal films was found to be strongly bulk-like, demonstrating a sharp Curie anomaly, as well as Curie-Weiss behaviour. In addition, the sudden change in the remanent polarisation as a function of temperature at TC was characteristic of a first order phase change. The work represents a dramatic improvement on that previously published by M. M. Saad, P. Baxter, R. M. Bowman, J. M. Gregg, F. D. Morrison & J. F. Scott, J. Phys: Cond. Matt., 16 L451-L456 (2004), as critical shortcomings in the original specimen geometry, involving potential signal contributions from bulk BaTiO3, have now been obviated. That the functional properties of single crystal thin film lamellae are comparable to bulk, and not like those of conventionally deposited heteroegenous thin film systems, has therefore been confirmed.

Natural dolomitic rock has been investigated in the transesterification of C-4 and C-8 triglycerides and olive oil with a view to determining its viability as a solid base catalyst for use in biodiesel synthesis. XRD reveals that the dolomitic rock comprised 77% dolomite and 23% magnesian calcite. The generation of basic sites requires calcination at 900 degrees C, which increases the surface area and transforms the mineral into MgO nanocrystallites dispersed over CaO particles. Calcined dolomitic rock exhibits high activity towards the liquid phase transesterification of glyceryl tributyrate and trioctanoate, and even olive oil, with methanol for biodiesel production.

Otto configuration attenuated total reflection (ATR) measurements of the excitation of surface plasmons in the infrared have been carried out on YBCO films deposited on MgO (100) substrates. The dielectric constants for YBCO at 3.392 mu m are determined to be -10 + 15i for c-axis material. The anisotropic nature of the cuprate is seen from films with other orientations: nearly a-axis material has constants of 4.0 + 7.0i. It is thus not metallic in its optical response along the c-axis which lies parallel to the substrate plane. Ellipsometric measurements in the visible on c-axis material point to a maximum surface plasmon energy of 1 eV.

YBaCuO films with (001) orientation have been deposited on MgO by laser ablation at 248 and 193 nm wavelengths. Transitions to zero resistance at 87 K and 90 K have been reproducibly achieved in the respective cases. Optical spectroscopic studies of the plume show the importance of molecular species in the ablation if good superconducting films are to be formed. The substrate position in the plume and substrate temperature are important in determining film quality. The influence of oxygen gas pressure can be significant. SEM studies show the occurrence of second-phase outcrops with a needle-like morphology aligned over the whole area of the film along two mutually perpendicular directions on the film surface. Film orientation is determined by XRD and R against T is measured down to 80 K in a hydrogen exchange gas cryostat. Characterization studies of device-related multilayer YBaCuO/PrBaCuO structures by XRD are presented.

The position-dependent oxygen vacancy dynamics induced by a biased scanning probe microscopy tip in Samarium doped ceria thin films grown on MgO (100) substrates is investigated. The granularity of the samples gives rise to spatially dependent local electrochemical activity, as explored by electrochemical strain microscopy. The kinetics of the oxygen vacancy relaxation process is investigated separately for grain boundaries and grains. Higher oxygen vacancy concentration variation and slower diffusion are observed in the grain boundary regions as compared to the grains.

Dense ceramics with mixed protonic-electronic conductivity are of considerable interest for the separation and purification of hydrogen and as electrochemical reactors. In this work, the hydrogen permeability of a Sr0.97Ce0.9Yb0.1O3 - δ (SCYb) membrane with a porous Pt catalytic layer on the hydrogen feed-exposed side has been studied over the temperature range 500-804 °C employing Ar as the permeate sweep gas. A SiO2-B2O3-BaO-MgO-ZnO-based glass-ceramic sealant was successfully employed to seal the membrane to the dual-chamber reactor. After 14 h of exposure to 10% H2:90% N2 at 804 °C, the H2 flux reached a maximum of 33 nmol cm- 2 s- 1, over an order of magnitude higher than that obtained on membranes of similar thickness without surface modification. The permeation rate then decreased slowly and moderately on annealing at 804 °C over a further 130 h. Thereafter, the flux was both reproducible and stable on thermal cycling in the range 600-804 °C. The results indicate an important role of superficial activation processes in the flux rate and suggest that hydrogen fluxes can be further optimised in cerate-based perovskites. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. Conventional practice in Regional Geochemistry includes as a final step of any geochemical campaign the generation of a series of maps, to show the spatial distribution of each of the components considered. Such maps, though necessary, do not comply with the compositional, relative nature of the data, which unfortunately make any conclusion based on them sensitive
to spurious correlation problems. This is one of the reasons why these maps are never interpreted isolated. This contribution aims at gathering a series of statistical methods to produce individual maps of multiplicative combinations of components (logcontrasts), much in the flavor of equilibrium constants, which are designed on purpose to capture certain aspects of the data.
We distinguish between supervised and unsupervised methods, where the first require an external, non-compositional variable (besides the compositional geochemical information) available in an analogous training set. This external variable can be a quantity (soil density, collocated magnetics, collocated ratio of Th/U spectral gamma counts, proportion of clay particle fraction, etc) or a category (rock type, land use type, etc). In the supervised methods, a regression-like model between the external variable and the geochemical composition is derived in the training set, and then this model is mapped on the whole region. This case is illustrated with the Tellus dataset, covering Northern Ireland at a density of 1 soil sample per 2 square km, where we map the presence of blanket peat and the underlying geology. The unsupervised methods considered include principal components and principal balances
(Pawlowsky-Glahn et al., CoDaWork2013), i.e. logcontrasts of the data that are devised to capture very large variability or else be quasi-constant. Using the Tellus dataset again, it is found that geological features are highlighted by the quasi-constant ratios Hf/Nb and their ratio against SiO2; Rb/K2O and Zr/Na2O and the balance between these two groups of two variables; the balance of Al2O3 and TiO2 vs. MgO; or the balance of Cr, Ni and Co vs. V and Fe2O3. The largest variability appears to be related to the presence/absence of peat.
