Despite progress in defining a pathogenic role for amyloid beta protein (Abeta) in Alzheimer's disease, orally bioavailable compounds that prevent its effects on hippocampal synaptic plasticity and cognitive function have not yet emerged. A particularly attractive therapeutic strategy is to selectively neutralize small, soluble Abeta oligomers that have recently been shown to mediate synaptic dysfunction. METHODS: Using electrophysiological, biochemical, and behavioral assays, we studied how scyllo-inositol (AZD-103; molecular weight, 180) neutralizes the acutely toxic effects of Abeta on synaptic function and memory recall. RESULTS: Scyllo-inositol, but not its stereoisomer, chiro-inositol, dose-dependently rescued long-term potentiation in mouse hippocampus from the inhibitory effects of soluble oligomers of cell-derived human Abeta. Cerebroventricular injection into rats of the soluble Abeta oligomers interfered with learned performance on a complex lever-pressing task, but administration of scyllo-inositol via the drinking water fully prevented oligomer-induced errors. INTERPRETATION: A small, orally available natural product penetrates into the brain in vivo to rescue the memory impairment produced by soluble Abeta oligomers through a mechanism that restores hippocampal synaptic plasticity.

The transport of charged particles in partially turbulent magnetic systems is investigated from first principles. A generalized compound transport model is proposed, providing an explicit relation between the mean-square deviation of the particle parallel and perpendicular to a magnetic mean field, and the mean-square deviation which characterizes the stochastic field-line topology. The model is applied in various cases of study, and the relation to previous models is discussed.

Toluene- and naphthalene-dioxygenase-catalysed oxidation of six bicyclic disulfide substrates, using whole cells of Pseudomonas putida, gave the corresponding monosulfoxides with high ee values and enantiocomplementarity, in most cases. Two alcohol-sulfoxide diastereoisomers, formed from the reaction of the (R)-1,3-benzodithiole-1-oxide metabolite with n-butyllithium and benzaldehyde, were separated and stereochemically assigned. Treatment, of enantiopure (1R,3R)-benzo-1,3-dithiole-1,3-dioxide, obtained by chemoenzymatic synthesis, with alkyllithium reagents, resulted in a novel ring-opening reaction which proceeded with inversion of configuration to yield a series of acyclic disulfoxides. Eleven polymorphic microsatellite marker loci were developed from a Leisler's bat (Nyctalus leisleri) genomic enriched library. Assessment of the usefulness of these markers for population genetics studies of Leisler's bats was carried out by screening 100 specimens sampled from eight locations in Ireland and two in Northeastern France. Both moderately and highly polymorphic marker loci were identified. Five to 28 alleles were found to be segregating per locus with observed heterozygosities values ranging from 28.4 to 94%. Initial evaluation indicates that these microsatellites will be useful for genetic based studies aiming, for instance, at parentage and population structure of Leisler's bats.

The present paper is an attempt to account for the emergence of the designation “only begotten” in the English Bible, its widespread use in pre-modern versions, and its gradual and almost complete disappearance from most contemporary translations. A close examination of the origins of this designation, traceable to its Latin cognate unigenitus, first introduced into the biblical tradition by St. Jerome to render selected occurrences of the Greek adjective monogenes, reveals a unique theological inspiration behind it. “Only begotten,” recurring in English translation of the Bible for almost six centuries as an important christological title, has recently been replaced by translational solutions reflecting a more accurate understanding of the underlying Greek word.
