Ruthenium, rhodium, and iridium piano stool complexes of the pentafluorophenyl-substituted diphosphine (C6F5)2PCH2P(C6F5)2 (2) have been prepared and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The Cp-P tethered complex [{(C5Me4CH2C6F4(C6F5)CH2P(C6F5)2}RhCl2] (9), in which only one phosphorus is coordinated to the rhodium, was prepared by thermolysis of a slurry of [Cp*RhCl(-Cl)]2 and 2 and was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The tethering occurs by intramolecular dehydrofluorinative coupling of the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl ligand and P,P-coordinated 2. The geometric changes that occur on tethering force dissociation of one of the phosphorus atoms. The effects of introducing phosphine ligands to the coordination sphere of piano stool hydrogen transfer catalysts have been studied. The complexes of fluorinated phosphine complexes are found to transfer hydrogen at rates that compare favorably with leading catalysts, particularly when the phosphine and cyclopentadienyl functionalities are tethered. The highly chelating Cp-PP complex [(C5Me4CH2-2-C5F3N-4-PPhCH2CH2PPh2)RhCl]BF4 (1) was found to outperform all other complexes tested. The mechanism of hydrogen transfer catalyzed by piano stool phosphine complexes is discussed with reference to the trends in activity observed.

Avoiding the use of solvents in synthesis can reduce environmental contamination and even be more convenient than using solvent-based synthesis. In this tutorial review we focus on recent research into the use of mechanochemistry ( grinding) to synthesise metal complexes in the absence of solvent. We include synthesis of mononuclear complexes, coordination clusters, spacious coordination cages, and 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional coordination polymers ( metal organic frameworks) which can even exhibit microporosity. Remarkably, in many cases, mechanochemical synthesis is actually faster and more convenient than the original solvent-based methods. Examples of solvent-free methods other than grinding are also briefly discussed, and the positive outlook for this growing topic is emphasised.

The disilylated compound 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-2,3,5,6-tetrakis((dimethylamino)methyl)benzene, (Me(3)Si)(2)C2N4, 4, can be electrophilically palladated selectively at the C-Si bonds to afford the neutral 1,4-bis(palladium) complex [(AcOPd)(2)(C2N4)], from which the dicationic [(LPd)(2)(C2N4)](2+) (L = MeCN) organometallic species are accessible. The monosilylated species (Me(3)Si)(H)C2N4, 5, can be used for the preparation of the dicationic heterodinuclear platinum(II)-palladium(II) species [(LPd)(LPt)(C2N4)](2+) (L = MeCN) via a sequence of transmetalation of the organolithium derivative of 5 with [PtCl2(SEt(2))(2)], followed by a C-Si bond palladation reaction.

Liquid coordination complexes (LCCs) are a new class of liquid Lewis acids, prepared by combining an excess of a metal halide (e.g. GaCl3) with a basic donor molecule (e.g. amides, amines or phosphines). LCCs were used to catalyse oligomerisation of 1-decene to polyalphaolefins (PAOs). Molecular weight distribution and physical properties of the produced oils were compliant with those required for low viscosity synthetic (Group IV) lubricant base oils. Kinematic viscosities at 100 °C of ca. 4 or 6 cSt were obtained, along with viscosity indexes above 120 and pour points below −57 °C. In industry, to achieve similar properties, BF3 gas is used as a catalyst. LCCs are proposed as a safer and economically attractive alternative to BF3 gas for the production of polyalphaolefins.

Several potential approaches to the enzyme-catalysed synthesis of arene trans-diols have been examined including epoxidation/hydrolysis, bis-benzylic hydroxylation, cis-dihydroxylation/alcohol dehydrogenation/ketone reduction, cisdihydroxylation/cis-trans isomerisation. and multi-enzyme synthesis of trans-dihydrodiol secondary metabolites from primary metabolites. The lack of general applicability of these enzymatic methods has led to the development of several chemoenzymatic routes for the synthesis of a series of trans-dihydrodiols from the readily available cis-dihydrodiol precursors. Partial hydrogenation of cis-dihydrodiol metabolites to yield the corresponding cis-tetrahydrodiols followed by a regioselective Mitsunobu inversion process gave trans-tetrahydrodiols that were in turn converted to trans-dihydrodiols. The formation of anti-benzene dioxides or iron tricarbonyl complexes from the corresponding cis-dihydrodiol precursors provided shorter and more convenient chemoenzymatic routes to trans-dihydrodiols. The application of cis-dihydrodiol metabolites of polycyclic azaarenes in the synthesis of the corresponding arene oxides followed by chemical hydrolysis provides a convenient route to trans-dihydrodiols. A catalyst system comprising 10 mol % (Pd(OAc) and 20 mol % PPh3 effects the cyclisation of aryl halides onto proximate alkenes via 5-, 6-, and 7-exo-trig, and 7-endo-trig processes giving a variety of bridged-ring carbo- and hetero-cycles in excellent yield. Double bond isomerisation in the product is rarely encountered and may be suppressed by the addition of Tl(1) salts. One example of diastereospecific bis-cyclisation is given and the crystal structure of 1-aza-2-sulphonyl-3,4-benzobicyclo[3.2.1]nona-6-ene is reported.
