<p>High spectral resolution (~80 000) and signal-to-noise observations from the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph Paranal Observatory Project (UVES-POP) are used to study the interstellarmolecular lines CN (3874 Ã), CH<sup>+</sup> (3957, 4232 Ã) and CH (3886, 4300 Ã) towards 74 O- and B-type stellar sightlines. Additionally, archive data are presented for 140 ELODIE early-type stellar sightlines at R = 42 000, plus 25 FEROS at R = 48 000 and 3 UVES at R &gt; 50 000, mainly in the CH<sup>+</sup> (4232 Ã) and CH (3886, 4300 Ã) transitions. Detection rates are ~45 per cent for CN and ~67 per cent for the other lines in the POP sample, and ~10-15 per cent for CH<sup>+</sup> and CH lines in the additional sample. CH and CH<sup>+</sup> are well correlated between log[N(CH) cm<sup>-2</sup>]~12-14, implying that these clouds are CH<sup>+</sup>-like CH and not CN-like CH. CH is also very well correlated with Na I D in the range log[N(Na I cm<sup>-2</sup>]) ~12.2-14.2. A few sightlines show tentative velocity shifts of ~2 km s<sup>-1</sup> between CH and CH<sup>+</sup>, which appear to be caused by differences in component strength in blends, and hence do not provide firm evidence for shocks. Finally, we describe a search for <sup>13</sup>CH<sup>+</sup> in a sightline towards HD 76341. No <sup>13</sup>CH<sup>+</sup> is detected, placing a limit on the <sup>13</sup>CH<sup>+</sup> to <sup>12</sup>CH<sup>+</sup> ratio of ~0.01. If a formal fit is attempted, the equivalent width ratio in the two isotopes is a factor ~90 but with large errors. </p>

Atmospheric parameters and surface chemical compositions are presented for eight stars, classified as B1 or B2 but with a range of luminosity classes, in the northern double cluster h and chi Persei. Echelle spectroscopy (covering the wavelength region 3900 to 4700 Ã) and grating spectroscopy (of the Balmer, H? and Hß lines) were analysed using non-LTE synthetic spectra based on LTE line-blanketed atmosphere structures. High microturbulences are found in our sample, and this quantity must be included in the computation of the non-LTE level populations; its effect is generally to decrease the derived metal abundances by typically 0.1 dex but by up to 0.4 dex. Our absolute abundances are in reasonable agreement with those previously found for main sequence B-type stars, while we find some evidence for small abundance variations (particularly for nitrogen) within our sample. One star (BD+56 678) appears to be a spectrum variable and at two epochs shows a highly enriched nitrogen spectrum. Our atmospheric parameters imply that two stars have previously been mis-identified as main sequence objects and a distance modulus, at the higher end of the values previously deduced. The observational HR diagram is consistent with stellar evolutionary models that explicitly include the effects of rotation.

This study describes a study of 14 software companies, on how they initiate and pre-plan software projects. The aim was to obtain an indication of the range of planning activities carried out. The study, using a convenience sample, was carried out using structured interviews, with questions about early software project planning activities. The study offers evidence that an iterative and incremental development process presents extra difficulties in the case of fixed-contract projects. The authors also found evidence that feasibility studies were common, but generally informal in nature. Documentation of the planning process, especially for project scoping, was variable. For incremental and iterative development projects, an upfront decision on software architecture was shown to be preferred over allowing the architecture to just â˜emergeâ. There is also evidence that risk management is recognised but often performed incompletely. Finally appropriate future research arising from the study is described.

Throughout Earth's history there have been temporal and spatial variations in the amount of visible and ultraviolet radiation received by ecosystems. This paper examines if temporal changes in these forms of energy receipt could have influenced the tempo and mode of plant diversity and speciation, focusing in particular upon Cenozoic time-scales. Evidence for changing patterns of plant diversity and speciation apparent in various fossil records and molecular phylogenies are considered alongside calculated changes in thermal and solar ultraviolet energy (specifically UV-B) over the past 50 Myr. We suggest that changes in thermal energy influx (amount and variability) affected the tempo of evolution through its influence upon community dynamics (e.g. population size, diversity, turnover, extinctions). It was not only the amount of thermal energy but also variability in its flux that may have influenced these processes, and ultimately the rate of diversification. We suggest that variations in UV-B would have influenced the mode and tempo of speciation through changes to genome stability during intervals of elevated UV-B. We argue, therefore, that although variability in thermal energy and UV-B fluxes through time may lead to the same end-point (changing the rate of diversification), the processes responsible are very different and both need to be considered when linking evolutionary processes to energy flux.

The formation of various phases during boronizing of silicided molybdenum substrates (MoSi2/Mo) was investigated. Boronizing treatments were conducted in molten salts under an inert gas atmosphere in the 700-1000 degrees C temperature range for 3-7 h. Depending on the process type (non-current or electrochemical) and molten salt temperature, the formation of different boride phases (MoB, Mo2B5, MoB2, MoB4) was observed. At the same time, substantial oxidation of the bulk molybdenum disilicide phase (MoSi2) to the Mo5Si3 phase was observed in non-current boronizing. The oxidation resistance of the coatings was investigated by the weight change in an air-water (2.3 vol.%) mixture at a temperature of 500 degrees C for a period up to 700 h. Results indicated that a two-phase microstructure consisting of the MoSi2, matrix phase with 12-15 wt.% of the MoB4 phase greatly improved the oxidation resistance of the molybdenum substrates.
