When operated with a metallic tip and sample the scanning tunnelling microscope constitutes a nanoscale, plasmonic light source yielding broadband emission up to a photon energy determined by the applied bias. The emission is due to tunnelling electron excitation and subsequent radiative decay of localized plasmon modes, which can be on the lateral scale of a single metal grain (similar to 25 nm) or less. For a Au-tip/Au-polycrystalline sample under ambient conditions it is found that the intensity and spectral content of the emitted light are not dependent on the lateral grain dimension, but are predominantly determined by the tip geometry. However, the intensity increases strongly with increasing film thickness (grain depth) up to 20-25 nm or approximately the skin depth of the Au film. Photon maps can show less emissive grains and two classes of this occurrence are distinguished. The first is geometrical in origin - a double-tip structure in this case - while the second is due to a contamination-induced lowering of the local work function that causes the tunnel gap to increase. It is suggested that differences in work-function lowering between grains presenting different crystalline facets, combined with an exponential decay in emitted light intensity with tip - sample distance, leads to grain contrast. These results are relevant to tip-enhanced Raman scattering and the fabrication of micro/nano-scale planar, light-emitting tunnel devices.

Gold is the optimal tip metal for light emission in scanning tunnelling microscopy (LESTM) under ambient conditions. Sharp Au-tips of similar to 10nm radius were produced reliably using a safe, two-step etching method in 20% (w/w) CaCl2 solution. Previous CaCl2-based methods have tended to produce blunter tips, while other etching techniques that do produce sharp Au-tips, do so with the use of toxic or hazardous electrolytes. The tips are characterised using scanning electron microscopy and their efficacy in LESTM is evidenced by high-resolution, simultaneous topographic and photon mapping of Au(1 1 1)- and polycrystalline Au-surfaces. Spectra of the optical emission exhibit only one or two peaks with etched tips in contrast to the more complex spectra typical of cut tips; this feature, together with the highly symmetric geometry of the tips, facilitates a definitive analysis of the light emission process. High-cadence, multiwavelength optical observations of a solar active region (NOAA AR 10969), obtained with the Swedish Solar Telescope, are presented. Difference imaging of white light continuum data reveals a white-light brightening, 2 minutes in duration, linked to a cotemporal and cospatial C2.0 flare event. The flare kernel observed in the white-light images has a diameter of 300 km, thus rendering it below the resolution limit of most space-based telescopes. Continuum emission is present only during the impulsive stage of the flare, with the effects of chromospheric emission subsequently delayed by approximate to 2 minutes. The localized flare emission peaks at 300% above the quiescent flux. This large, yet tightly confined, increase in emission is only resolvable due to the high spatial resolution of the Swedish Solar Telescope. An investigation of the line-of-sight magnetic field derived from simultaneous MDI data shows that the continuum brightening is located very close to a magnetic polarity inversion line. In addition, an Ha flare ribbon is directed along a region of rapid magnetic energy change, with the footpoints of the ribbon remaining cospatial with the observed white-light brightening throughout the duration of the flare. The observed flare parameters are compared with current observations and theoretical models for M- and X-class events and we determine the observed white-light emission is caused by radiative back-warming. We suggest that the creation of white-light emission is a common feature of all solar flares.

The light emission spectrum from a scanning tunnelling microscope (LESTM) is investigated as a function of relative humidity and shown to provide a novel and sensitive means for probing the growth and properties of a water meniscus on the nanometre scale. An empirical model of the light emission process is formulated and applied successfully to replicate the decay in light intensity and spectral changes observed with increasing relative humidity. The modelling indicates a progressive water filling of the tip-sample junction with increasing humidity or, more pertinently, of the volume of the localized surface plasmons responsible for light emission; it also accounts for the effect of asymmetry in structuring of the water molecules with respect to the polarity of the applied bias. This is juxtaposed with the case of a non-polar liquid in the tip-sample nanocavity where no polarity dependence of the light emission is observed. In contrast to the discrete detection of the presence/absence of a water bridge in other scanning probe experiments through measurement of the feedback parameter for instrument control, LESTM offers a means of continuously monitoring the development of the water bridge with sub-nanometre sensitivity. The results are relevant to applications such as dip-pen nanolithography and electrochemical scanning probe microscopy.

Scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) tip-induced light emission from Au and Ag has been studied. Thin film samples similar to100nm thick were prepared by thermal evaporation at 0.5nm/s onto a room-temperature glass substrate to produce grains of 20-50nm in lateral dimension at the surface. Light emission from the samples in the STM was quasi-simultaneously recorded with the topography, at 1.8V tip bias and 3-40nA current, alternating pixel by pixel at the same bias. Typically, a surface scan range of 150 nm x 150 nm was surveyed. Au, W and PtIr tips were used.

The spatial dynamics of the optical emission from an array of 50x50 individual microplasma devices is reported. The array is operated in noble gas at atmospheric pressure with an ac voltage. The optical emission is analyzed with phase and space resolution. It has been found that the emission is not continuous over the entire ac period, it occurs only twice in each cycle. Each of the observed emission phases shows a self-pulsing of the discharge, with several bursts of emission of a fixed width and repetition rate. Cross-talk between the individual devices can be observed through spatially resolved measurements. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We present an analysis of an X-class flare that occurred on 11 June 2014 in active region NOAA 12087 using a newly developed high cadence Image
Selector operated by Astronomical Institute in Ondrejov, Czech Republic. This instrument provides spectra in the 350 - 440 nm wavelength range, which
covers the higher order Balmer lines as well as the Balmer jump at 364 nm. However, no detectable increase in these emissions were detected during
the flare, and support observations from SDO/EVE MEGS-B also show that the Lyman line series and recombination continuum were also suppressed,
particularly when compared to an M-class flare that occurred an hour earlier, and two other X-class flares on the preceding day. The X-class flare under
investigation also showed strong white light emission in SDO/HMI data, as well as an extremely hard electron spectrum ( 3.6), and
-ray emission,
from RHESSI data. This unique combination of datasets allows us to conclude that the white light emission from this flare corresponds to a black body
heated by high-energy electrons (and/or ions), as opposed to optical chromospheric emission from hydrogen.

Inductively coupled radio-frequency plasmas can be operated in two distinct modes. At low power and comparatively low plasma densities the plasma is sustained in capacitive mode (E-mode). As the plasma density increases a transition to inductive mode (H-mode) is observed. This transition region is of particular interest and governed by non-linear dynamics, which under certain conditions results in structure formation with strong spatial gradients in light emission. These modes show pronounced differences is various measureable quantities e.g. electron densities, electron energy distribution functions, ion energy distribution functions, dynamics of optical light emission. Here the transition from E- to H- mode in an oxygen containing inductively coupled plasma (ICP) is investigated using space and phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy (PROES). The emission, measured phase resolved, allows investigation of the electron dynamics within the rf cycle, important for understanding the power coupling and ionization mechanisms in the discharge. The temporal variation of the emission reflects the dynamics of relatively high-energy electrons. It is possible to distinguish between E- and H-mode from the intensity and temporal behaviour of the emission.

We simulate the localized surface plasmon resonances of an Au nanoparticle within tunnelling proximity of an Au substrate. The results demonstrate that the calculated resonance energies can be identified with those experimentally detected for light emission from the tip-sample junction of a scanning tunnelling microscope. Relative to the modes of an isolated nanoparticle these modes show significant red-shifting, extending further into the infrared with increasing radius, primarily due to a proximity-induced lowering of the effective bulk plasmon frequency. Spatial mapping of the field enhancement factor shows an oscillatory variation of the field, absent in the case of a dielectric substrate; also the degree of localization of the modes, and thus the resolution achievable electromagnetically, is shown to depend primarily on the nanoparticle radius, which is only weakly dependent on wavelength.
