A novel configuration for the in situ control of the catalytic activity of a polycrystalline Pt catalyst supported on a mixed ionic electronic conducting (MIEC) substrate is investigated. The modification of the catalytic activity is achieved by inducing the reverse spillover of oxygen promoting species from the support onto the catalyst surface, thus modifying the chemisorptive bond energy of the gas phase adsorbed reactants. This phenomenon is known as Electrochemical Promotion of Catalysis (EPOC). In this work we investigate the use of a wireless system that takes advantage of the mixed ionic electronic conductivity of the catalyst support (internally short-circuiting the system) in a dual chamber reactor. In this wireless configuration, the reaction takes place in one chamber of the membrane reactor while introduction of the promoting species is achieved by the use of an appropriate sweep gas (and therefore control of the oxygen chemical potential difference across the membrane) on the other chamber. Experimental results have shown that the catalytic rate can be enhanced by using an oxygen sweep, while a hydrogen sweep can reverse the changes. Total rate enhancement ratios of up to 3.5 were measured. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It has been found that the catalytic activity and selectivity of a metal film deposited on a solid electrolyte could be enhanced dramatically and in a reversible way by applying an electrical current or potential between the metal catalyst and the counter electrode (also deposited on the electrolyte). This phenomenon is know as NEMCA [S. Bebelis, C.G. Vayenas, Journal of Catalysis, 118 (1989) 125-146.] or electrochemical promotion (EP) [J. Prichard, Nature, 343 (1990) 592.] of catalysis. Yttria-doped barium zirconate, BaZr0.9Y0.1O3 - α (BZY), a known proton conductor, has been used in this study. It has been reported that proton conducting perovskites can, under the appropriate conditions, act also as oxide ion conductors. In mixed conducting systems the mechanism of conduction depends upon the gas atmosphere that to which the material is exposed. Therefore, the use of a mixed ionic (oxide ion and proton) conducting membrane as a support for a platinum catalyst may facilitate the tuning of the promotional behaviour of the catalyst by allowing the control of the conduction mechanism of the electrolyte. The conductivity of BZY under different atmospheres was measured and the presence of oxide ion conduction under the appropriate conditions was confirmed. Moreover, kinetic experiments on ethylene oxidation corroborated the findings from the conductivity measurements showing that the use of a mixed ionic conductor allows for the tuning of the reaction rate. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Neutron diffraction has been used to investigate the structure of liquid mixtures of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate with benzene. Two concentrations of benzene were investigated, namely, 33 mol % and 67 mol %, and show similar structures in each case. The presence of benzene significantly alters the ionic liquid structure, in particular, in the cation-cation interactions, in agreement with the single-crystal structure described recently (Holbrey, J. D.; Reichert, W. M.; Nieuwenhuyzen, M.; Sheppard, O.; Hardacre, C.; Rogers, R. D. Chem. Commun. 2003, 476). In each case, the data was analyzed using an empirical potential structure refinement process.

To evaluate the effect of mass transfer limitations in the three-phase oxidation of cinnamyl alcohol carried out in toluene and an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulphonyl)imide), studies have been performed in a rotating disc reactor and compared with those carried out in a stirred tank reactor where mass transfer effects are considered negligible. High catalyst efficiencies are found in the stirred tank reactor with the use of both ionic liquid and toluene, although there is a decrease in rate for the ionic liquid reactions. In contrast, internal pore diffusion limits the reaction in both solvents in the rotating disc reactor. This mass transfer resistance reduces the problem of overoxidation of the metal surface when the reaction is carried out in toluene, leading to significantly higher rates of reaction than expected, although at the cost of decreased selectivity.

The selective hydrogenation of , unsaturated aldehydes has been performed in a range of room temperature ionic liquids. The reaction data reported show that it is possible to enhance the selectivity of supported palladium catalysts for the reduction of the conjugated CC bond by using ionic liquids as solvents compared with conventional molecular organic solvents. The catalyst system is easily recycled without the need to isolate or filter the catalyst and may be used without further treatment.

The selective heterogeneous catalytic reduction of phenyl acetylene to styrene over palladium supported on calcium carbonate is reported in both an ionic liquid and a molecular solvent. By using a rotating disc reactor in conjunction with results from a stirred tank reactor it is possible, for the first time, to disentangle the mass transfer contributions in the ionic liquid system. For both heptane and 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}imide, the reaction in the rotating disc reactor is dominated by reaction in the entrained film on the disc compared with very limited reaction in the bulk liquid. The lower reaction rate obtained in the ionic liquid compared with the organic solvent is shown to be due to the slow transport of the hydrogen dissolved in the liquid. It is clear from the results presented herein that, although the hydrodynamics of similar reactors used for biological treatment of wastewater are well understood, on using a more viscous fluid and higher rotation speeds necessary for fine chemical catalysis these simple relationships breakdown.
