We investigated the sensitivity of low-frequency electrical measurements to microbe-induced metal sulfide precipitation. Three identical sand-packed monitoring columns were used; a geochemical column, an electrical column and a control column. In the first experiment, continuous upward flow of nutrients and metals in solution was established in each column. Cells of Desulfovibrio vulgaris (D. vulgaris) were injected into the center of the geochemical and electrical columns. Geochemical sampling and post-experiment destructive analysis showed that microbial induced sulfate reduction led to metal precipitation on bacteria cells, forming motile biominerals. Precipitation initially occurred in the injection zone, followed by chemotactic migration of D. vulgaris and ultimate accumulation around the nutrient source at the column base. Results from this experiment conducted with metals show (1) polarization anomalies, up to 14 mrad, develop at the bacteria injection and final accumulation areas, (2) the onset of polarization increase occurs concurrently with the onset of lactate consumption, (3) polarization profiles are similar to calculated profiles of the rate of lactate consumption, and (4) temporal changes in polarization and conduction correlate with a geometrical rearrangement of metal-coated bacterial cells. In a second experiment, the same biogeochemical conditions were established except that no metals were added to the flow solution. Polarization anomalies were absent when the experiment was replicated without metals in solution. We therefore attribute the polarization increase observed in the first experiment to a metal-fluid interfacial mechanism that develops as metal sulfides precipitate onto microbial cells and form biominerals. Temporal changes in polarization and conductivity reflect changes in (1) the amount of metal-fluid interfacial area, and (2) the amount of electronic conduction resulting from microbial growth, chemotactic movement and final coagulation. This polarization is correlated with the rate of microbial activity inferred from the lactate concentration gradient, probably via a common total metal surface area effect.

Experimental results are presented to show how a planar circuit, printed on a laterally shielded dielectric waveguide, can induce and control the radiation from a leaky-mode. By studying the leaky-mode complex propagation constant, a desired radiation pattern can be synthesized, controlling the main radiation characteristics (pointing direction, beamwidth, sidelobes level) for a given frequency, This technique leads to very flexible and original leaky-wave antenna designs. The experiments show to be in very good agreement with the leaky-mode theory.

The general properties of a frequency selective surface loaded with negative impedance converter (NIC)-based active loads are discussed from a theoretical perspective. The stability problem associated with NIC circuits embedded in artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) and AMC absorber applications is studied using pole-zero analysis. The requirements and constraints for achieving stable operation with enhanced bandwidth using negative capacitance as realized by a floating NIC network are derived. Furthermore, it is shown that it is nearly impossible to simultaneously implement a negative capacitor and a negative inductor to such structures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article presents a cascaded arrangement comprising a double-layer frequency selective surface circularly polarizing (CPFSS) and a second screen that can be switched between artificial magnetic conduction (AMC) or perfect electric conducting. (PEC) states. The CPFSS consists of two stacked aluminium sheets patterned with periodic split ring structures While the AMC is a PCB sheet patterned with metallic squares interconnected by links By either open or short circuiting these links it is shown that the cascade of screens can be made to twist, or not to twist, an incident 45 degrees linearly polirized signal through 90 degrees upon reflection from the assembly The system was designed and optimized using CST software and predictions were validated experimentally and measured monostatic reflection loss results (C) 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc Microwave Opt Technol Lett 52 577-580, 2010. Semiconductor fabrication involves several sequential processing steps with the result that critical production variables are often affected by a superposition of affects over multiple steps. In this paper a Virtual Metrology (VM) system for early stage measurement of such variables is presented; the VM system seeks to express the contribution to the output variability that is due to a defined observable part of the production line. The outputs of the processed system may be used for process monitoring and control purposes. A second contribution of this work is the introduction of Elastic Nets, a regularization and variable selection technique for the modelling of highly-correlated datasets, as a technique for the development of VM models. Elastic Nets and the proposed VM system are illustrated using real data from a multi-stage etch process used in the fabrication of disk drive read/write heads. © 2013 IEEE.
