In this work we describe the effect of classical and quantum noise on the Berry phase. It is not a topical review article but rather an overview of our work in this field aiming at giving a simple pictorial intuition of our results.

The effect of fluctuations in the classical control parameters on the Berry phase of a spin 1/2 interacting with an adiabatically cyclically varying magnetic field is analyzed. It is explicitly shown that in the adiabatic limit dephasing is due to fluctuations of the dynamical phase.

The evolution of a two level system with a slowly varying Hamiltonian, modeled as a spin 1/2 in a slowly varying magnetic field, and interacting with a quantum environment, modeled as a bath of harmonic oscillators is analyzed using a quantum Langevin approach. This allows to easily obtain the dissipation time and the correction to the Berry phase in the case of an adiabatic cyclic evolution.

We present an ab initio real-time-based computational approach to study nonlinear optical properties in condensed matter systems that is especially suitable for crystalline solids and periodic nanostructures. The equations of motion and the coupling of the electrons with the external electric field are derived from the Berry-phase formulation of the dynamical polarization [Souza et al., Phys. Rev. B 69, 085106 (2004)]. Many-body effects are introduced by adding single-particle operators to the independent-particle Hamiltonian. We add a Hartree operator to account for crystal local effects and a scissor operator to correct the independent particle band structure for quasiparticle effects. We also discuss the possibility of accurately treating excitonic effects by adding a screened Hartree-Fock self-energy operator. The approach is validated by calculating the second-harmonic generation of SiC and AlAs bulk semiconductors: an excellent agreement is obtained with existing ab initio calculations from response theory in frequency domain [Luppi et al., Phys. Rev. B 82, 235201 (2010)]. We finally show applications to the second-harmonic generation of CdTe and the third-harmonic generation of Si.

We derive and employ a semiclassical Langevin equation obtained from path integrals to describe the ionic dynamics of a molecular junction in the presence of electrical current. The electronic environment serves as an effective nonequilibrium bath. The bath results in random forces describing Joule heating, current-induced forces including the nonconservative wind force, dissipative frictional forces, and an effective Lorentz-type force due to the Berry phase of the nonequilibrium electrons. Using a generic two-level molecular model, we highlight the importance of both current-induced forces and Joule heating for the stability of the system. We compare the impact of the different forces, and the wide-band approximation for the electronic structure on our result. We examine the current-induced instabilities (excitation of runaway "waterwheel" modes) and investigate the signature of these in the Raman signals.

The hydrodechlorination of chlorobenzene over supported palladium catalysts has been studied. The palladium catalysts: deactivate as the reaction proceeds due to the HCl formed as by-product. The effect of the addition of sodium compounds has been analysed for the neutralisation of HCl. When NaOH was added to the reaction mixture, no beneficial effect was observed due to the detrimental effect of the alkaline medium on the textural and metallic properties of the catalysts. Doping the support with NaOH prior to impregnation with the metal precursor leads (after calcination and reduction) to catalysts with better activity and tolerance to deactivation, especially those obtained when using PdCl2 as the metal precursor. Low metal dispersion and the capture of chloride by forming NaCl are the: main factors contributing to the: improved catalytic properties. Finally, doping the catalysts with NaOH or NaNO3, after reduction of the metal precursor leads to a moderate increase in initial activity and final conversion, although NaOH impregnation also gave rise to support corrosion and metal dispersion modification. Synchronisation of small distributed generation, 30 kVA–2 MVA, employing salient-pole synchronous machines is normally performed within a narrow range of tolerances for voltage, frequency and phase angle. However, there are situations when the ability to synchronise with non-ideal conditions would be beneficial. Such applications include power system islanding and rapid generator start-up. The physical process and effect of out-of-phase synchronisation is investigated both through simulation and experimental tests on a salient-pole alternator. There are many factors that affect synchronisation, but particular attention is given to synchronisation angle, voltage difference and, as generators will be loaded during islanding, the load angle. The results suggest that it would be acceptable for the maximum synchronisation angle of distributed generation to exceed that of current practice. Interesting observations on the nature of out-of-phase synchronisation are made, including some specific to small salient-pole synchronous machines. Furthermore, recommendations are made for synchronisation under different system conditions.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the extent to which the use of a clinical informatics tool that implements prospective monitoring plans reduces the incidence of potential delirium, falls, hospitalizations potentially due to adverse drug events, and mortality.
DESIGN: Randomized cluster trial.
SETTING: Twenty-five nursing homes serviced by two long-term care pharmacies.
PARTICIPANTS: Residents living in nursing homes during 2003 (1,711 in 12 intervention; 1,491 in 13 usual care) and 2004 (1,769 in 12 intervention; 1,552 in 13 usual care).
INTERVENTION: The pharmacy automatically generated Geriatric Risk Assessment MedGuide (GRAM) reports and automated monitoring plans for falls and delirium within 24 hours of admission or as part of the normal time frame of federally mandated drug regimen review.
MEASUREMENTS: Incidence of potential delirium, falls, hospitalizations potentially due to adverse drug events, and mortality.
RESULTS: GRAM triggered monitoring plans for 491 residents. Newly admitted residents in the intervention homes experienced a lower rate of potential delirium onset than those in usual care homes (adjusted hazard ratio (HR)=0.42, 95% confidence interval (CI)=0.35–0.52), overall hospitalization (adjusted HR=0.89, 95% CI=0.72–1.09), and mortality (adjusted HR=0.88, 95% CI=0.66–1.16). In longer stay residents, the effects of the intervention were attenuated, and all estimates included unity.
CONCLUSION: Using health information technology in long-term care pharmacies to identify residents who might benefit from the implementation of prospective medication monitoring care plans when complex medication regimens carry potential risks for falls and delirium may reduce adverse effects associated with appropriate medication use.

In this study, the feasibility of using H3PO4-activated lignin for hexavalent chromium adsorption has been investigated. The composite of activated lignin was characterized using FTIR, XRD and SEM with EDAX analysis. It was observed that the pH had a strong effect on the adsorption capacity; adsorption of Cr(VI) was more favorable at acidic pH with maximum uptake at pH 2. The adsorption equilibrium data were best represented by Koble-Corrigan isotherm. The monolayer sorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir model was found to be 77.85 mg/g. Adsorption showed pseudo-second order rate kinetics and the process involving the rate-controlling step is complex as it involves both film and intraparticle diffusion processes. The NaOH desorbing agent was able to release approximately 84% of metal ions. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the sorption process is exothermic and non-spontaneous. The overall Cr(VI) retention on the activated lignin surface perhaps includes both the physical adsorption of Cr(VI) and the consequent reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Surface reaction methodology was implicated in the optimization of hexavalent chromium removal onto lignin with respect to the process parameters. The influence of altering the conditions for removal of chromium(VI), for instance; solution pH, ionic strength, initial concentration, the dose of biosorbent, presence of other metals (Zn and Cu), presence of salts and biosorption-desorption studies, were investigated. It was found that the biosorption capacity of lignin depends on solution pH, with a maximum biosorption capacity for chromium at pH 2. Experimental equilibrium data were fitted to five different isotherm models by non-linear regression method, however, the biosorption equilibrium data were well interpreted by the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum biosorption capacities (q(max)) obtained using Dubinin-Radushkevich and Khan isotherms for Cr(VI) biosorption are 31.6 and 29.1 mg/g. respectively. Biosorption showed pseudo second order rate kinetics at different initial concentrations of Cr(VI). The intraparticle diffusion study indicated that film diffusion may be involved in the current study. The percentage removal of chromium on lignin decreased significantly in the presence of NaHCO3 and K2P2O7 salts. Desorption data revealed that nearly 70% of the Cr(VI) adsorbed on lignin could be desorbed using 0.1 M NaOH. It was evident that the biosorption mechanism involves the attraction of both hexavalent chromium (anionic) and trivalent chromium (cationic) onto the surface of lignin. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. In this study, the authors provide experimental characterisation of the field location effects that occur within a reverberant environment. This is achieved using a single active analogue phase conjugating unit positioned within a reverberant chamber. The authors demonstrate significant spatial focusing of ON-OFF-keyed 2.4 GHz signals. Furthermore, the effect of polarisation randomisation within such environments is discussed and it is shown that the system is highly tolerant of antenna orientation and does not require line of sight for its operation. © 2012 The Institution of Engineering and Technology.
