• Differential resistance to arsenate (AsO4 3-) is demonstrated here among populations of the ericoid mycorrhizal fungus Hymenoscyphus ericae isolated from Calluna vulgaris in natural heathland soils and soils contaminated with AsO4 3-. • Isolates (c. 25) of the fungus from each of two As and Cu mine sites, and a natural heathland site, were screened for AsO4 3- and Cu2+ resistance by growing isolates in media containing a range of AsO4 3- and Cu2+ concentrations. • H. ericae populations from the mine sites demonstrated resistance to AsO4 3- compared with the heathland population; the mine-site populations producing significant growth at the highest AsO4 3- concentration (4.67 mol m-3), whereas growth of the heathland population was almost completely inhibited. EC50 values for mine-site isolates were estimated to be 5-41-times higher than the heathland population. All isolates produced identical responses to increasing Cu2+ concentrations, with no differences observed between mine-site and heathland isolates. • Populations of H. ericae on the contaminated mine sites have developed adaptive resistance to AsO4 3-. By contrast, Cu2+ resistance appears to be constitutive.

Intermedin/adrenomedullin-2 (IMD) is a member of the adrenomedullin/CGRP peptide family. Less is known about the distribution of IMD than for other family members within the mammalian cardiovascular system, particularly in humans. The aim was to evaluate plasma IMD levels in healthy subjects and patients with chronic heart failure. IMD and its precursor fragments, preproIMD25–56 and preproIMD57–92, were measured by radioimmunoassay in 75 healthy subjects and levels of IMD were also compared to those of adrenomedullin (AM) and mid-region proadrenomedullin45–92 (MRproAM45–92) in 19 patients with systolic heart failure (LVEF < 45%). In healthy subjects, plasma levels (mean + SE) of IMD (6.3 + 0.6 pg ml−1) were lower than, but correlated with those of AM (25.8 + 1.8 pg ml−1; r = 0.49, p < 0.001). Plasma preproIMD25–56 (39.6 + 3.1 pg ml−1), preproIMD57–92 (25.9 + 3.8 pg ml−1) and MRproAM45–92 (200.2 + 6.7 pg ml−1) were greater than their respective bioactive peptides. IMD levels correlated positively with BMI but not age, and were elevated in heart failure (9.8 + 1.3 pg ml−1, p < 0.05), similarly to MRproAM45–92 (329.5 + 41.9 pg ml−1, p < 0.001) and AM (56.8 + 10.9 pg ml−1, p < 0.01). IMD levels were greater in heart failure patients with concomitant renal impairment (11.3 + 1.8 pg ml−1) than those without (6.5 + 1.0 pg ml−1; p < 0.05). IMD and AM were greater in patients receiving submaximal compared with maximal heart failure drug therapy and were decreased after 6 months of cardiac resynchronization therapy. In conclusion, IMD is present in the plasma of healthy subjects less abundantly than AM, but is similarly correlated weakly with BMI. IMD levels are elevated in heart failure, especially with concomitant renal impairment, and tend to be reduced by high intensity drug or pacing therapy.

We present intermediate-resolution HST/STIS spectra of a high- velocity interstellar cloud ((LSR)-L-upsilon = + 80 kms(-1)) towards DI1388, a young star in the Magellanic Bridge located between the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. The STIS data have a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 20-45 and a spectral resolution of about 6.5 km s(-1) (FWHM), The high-velocity cloud absorption is observed in the lines of C II, O I, Si II, Si III, Si IV and S III. Limits can be placed on the amount of S II and Fe II absorption that is present. An analysis of the relative abundances derived from the observed species, particularly C II and O I, suggests that this high-velocity gas is warm (T-k similar to 10(3)-10(4) K) and predominantly ionized, This hypothesis is supported by the presence of absorption produced by highly ionized species, such as Si IV, This sightline also intercepts two other high-velocity clouds that produce weak absorption features at (LSR)-L-upsilon = + 113 and + 130kms(-1) in the STIS spectra.

Colourless single crystals of [Hg(CF3)(2)(Pur)](4) and [Hg(CF3)(2)(Dat)](2) were obtained from aqueous and etheric solutions of the respective components Purine, (imidazo[4,5-d]pyrimidine, Pur), 3,5-dimethyl-4 '-amino-triazole (Dat) and bis(trifluoromethyl)mercury(II), Hg(CF3)(2). [Hg(CF3)(2)(Pur)](4) crystallizes with the tetragonal system (P-4, Z = 8, a = 1486.8(2), c = 1026.2(l) pm, R-all = 0.0657) with tetrameric molecules consisting of four purine molecules bridged by slightly bent Hg(CF3)2 molecules forming a cage with the CF3 ligands surrounding this cage. The two modifications of [Hg(Dat)(CF3)2]2 (1: 170 K, triclinic, P-1, Z = 2, a 814.9(2), b = 845.4(2), c = 968.4(3) pm, alpha = 106.55(2)degrees, beta= 103.41(2)degrees, gamma = 110.79(2)degrees, R-all = 0.1189; II: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, Z = 8, a = 879.8(2), b = 1731.0(3), c = 1593.9(3) pm, beta = 106.89(2)degrees, R-all = 0.1199) both contain dimeric molecules that are stacked parallel to one crystal axis to strands which are arranged in a parallel fashion in I and rotated against each other in 11 by 110 degrees. In both, the tetrameric [Hg(CF3)(2)(Pur)](4) and the dimeric [Hg(CF3)(2)(Dat)](2) the Hg(CF3)(2) molecules are slightly bent (around 167 and 170 degrees) and rather weakly attached to the N-donor ligands Pur and Dat with Hg-N distances around 272 pm, although in both cases the Hg atoms bridge between two ligand molecules.

ABSTRACT We present the first detailed spatiokinematical analysis and modelling of the planetary nebula Abell 41, which is known to contain the well-studied close-binary system MT Ser. This object represents an important test case in the study of the evolution of planetary nebulae with binary central stars as current evolutionary theories predict that the binary plane should be aligned perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the nebula. Deep narrow-band imaging in the light of [NII]6584Å, [OIII]5007 Å and [SII]6717+6731Å, obtained using ACAM on the William Herschel Telescope, has been used to investigate the ionization structure of Abell 41. Long-slit observations of the Ha and [NII]6584Å emission were obtained using the Manchester Echelle Spectrometer on the 2.1-m San Pedro Mártir Telescope. These spectra, combined with the narrow-band imagery, were used to develop a spatiokinematical model of [NII]6584Å emission from Abell 41. The best-fitting model reveals Abell 41 to have a waisted, bipolar structure with an expansion velocity of ~40 km s-1 at the waist. The symmetry axis of the model nebula is within 5° of perpendicular to the orbital plane of the central binary system. This provides strong evidence that the close-binary system, MT Ser, has directly affected the shaping of its nebula, Abell 41. Although the theoretical link between bipolar planetary nebulae and binary central stars is long established, this nebula is only the second to have this link, between nebular symmetry axis and binary plane, proved observationally.

A series of iron containing zeolites with varying Si/Al ratios (11.5-140) and low iron content (similar to 0.9 wt.% Fe) have been synthesised by solid-state ion exchange with commercially available zeolites and tested, for the first time, in the oxidative dehydrogenation of propane (ODHP) with N2O. The samples were characterised by XRD, N-2-Adsorption, NH3-TPD and DR-UV-vis spectroscopy. The acidity of the Fe-ZSM-5 can be controlled by high temperature and steam treatments and Si/Al ratio. The selectivity and yield of propene were found to be the highest over Fe-ZSM-5 with low Al contents and reduced acidity. The initial propene yield over Fe-ZSM-5 was significantly higher than that of Fe-SiO2 since the presence of weak and/or medium acid sites together with oligonuclear iron species and iron oxides on the ZSM-5 are found to enhance the N2O activation. The coking of Fe-ZSM-5 catalysts could also be controlled by reduction of the surface acidity of ZSM-5 and by the use of O-2 in addition to N2O as the oxidant. Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared with solid-state method have been shown to have comparable activity and better stability towards coking compared with Fe-ZSM-5 zeolites prepared by liquid ion exchange and hydrothermal synthesis methods. Ni-substituted Sr2Fe1.5-xNixMo0.5O6-δ (SFNM) materials have been investigated as anode catalysts for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells. Reduced samples (x = 0.05 and 0.1) maintained the initial perovskite structure after reduction in H2, while metallic nickel particles were detected on the grain surface for x = 0.2 and 0.3 using transmission electron microscopy. Temperature programmed reduction results indicate that the stable temperature for SFNM samples under reduction conditions decreases with Ni content. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis suggests that the incorporation of Ni affects the conductivity of SFNM through changing the ratios of Fe3+/Fe2+ and Mo6+/Mo5+. Sr2Fe1.4Ni0.1Mo0.5O6-δ shows the highest electrical conductivity of 20.6 S cm-1 at 800 °C in H2. The performance of this anode was further tested with electrolyte-supported cells, giving 380 mW cm-2 at 750 °C in H2, hence demonstrating that Ni doping in the B-site is beneficial for Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ anode performance.

This study was designed to analyze the gender-related association between SCN1A polymorphisms (voltage-gated sodium channels; α-subunit) and time-to-recurrence (TTR) in patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) treated with 5-fluoruracil (5-FU)-based adjuvant chemotherapy. We enrolled from a prospective database patients with stage II and III CRC treated with adjuvant 5-FU-based chemotherapy. Genotypes for SCN1A rs3812718 and rs229877 were determined by direct DNA sequencing. One hundred twenty-seven males and 107 females were included in the study. In the univariate and multivariate analysis, the shortest TTR was associated with female patients carrying the rs3812718-TT genotype (hazard ratio (HR): 2.26 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.89, 5.70), P=0.039) but with male patients carrying the rs3812718-CC genotype (HR: 0.49 (95% CI: 0.18, 1.38), P=0.048). For rs229877 the CT genotype was associated with a trend for shorter TTR in both gender populations. The study validated gender-dependent association between genomic SCN1A rs3812718 polymorphism and TTR in CRC patients treated with adjuvant 5-FU-based chemotherapy. This study confirms that voltage-gated Na+ channels may be a potential therapeutic target and a useful predictive biomarker before 5-FU infusion.

For applications to laboratory and astrophysical plasmas, there is a great need for accurate electron-impact excitation data between individual levels in the lower charge-state ions of iron. Recently, we have reported on the first intermediate-coupling R -matrix calculation of electron-impact excitation in Fe 4+ , in which the close-coupling expansion of the target included levels from both ground and excited configurations (Ballance et al 2007 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. [/0953-4075/40/23/f01] 40 F327 , 2008 Europhys. News 39 14). In this paper, we present the results of two large intermediate-coupling Dirac R -matrix calculations of electron-impact excitation of Fe 5+ . The results from the two calculations, which differ only in the configuration–interaction expansions of the target, are compared. These comparisons provide some indication of the accuracy of the calculations and the resulting data should be useful in modelling plasmas containing iron.

BACKGROUND: The value of adjuvant radiotherapy in triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains unclear. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted in TNBC patients to assess survival and recurrence outcomes associated with radiotherapy following either breast conserving therapy (BCT) or post-mastectomy radiotherapy (PMRT). METHODS: Four electronic databases were searched from January 2000 to November 2015 (PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science). Studies investigating overall survival and/or recurrence in TNBC patients according to radiotherapy administration were included. A random effects meta-analysis was conducted using mastectomy only patients as the reference. RESULTS: Twelve studies were included. The pooled hazard ratio (HR) for locoregional recurrence comparing BCT and PMRT to mastectomy only was 0.61 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.41-0.90) and 0.62 (95% CI 0.44-0.86), respectively. Adjuvant radiotherapy was not significantly associated with distant recurrence. The pooled HR for overall survival comparing BCT and PMRT to mastectomy only was 0.57 (95% CI 0.36-0.88) and HR 1.12 (95% CI 0.75, 1.69). Comparing PMRT to mastectomy only, tests for interaction were not significant for stage (p=0.98) or age at diagnosis (p=0.85). However, overall survival was improved in patients with late-stage disease (T3-4, N2-3) pooled HR 0.53 (95% CI 0.32-0.86), and women <40 years, pooled HR 0.30 (95% CI 0.11-0.82). CONCLUSIONS: Adjuvant radiotherapy was associated with a significantly lower risk of locoregional recurrence in TNBC patients, irrespective of the type of surgery. While radiotherapy was not consistently associated with an overall survival gain, benefits may be obtained in women with late-stage disease and younger patients.

In this paper strontium-site-deficient Sr2Fe1.4Co0.1Mo0.5O6-δ-based perovskite oxides (SxFCM) were prepared and evaluated as the cathode materials for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). All samples exhibited a cubic phase structure and the lattice shrinked with increasing the Sr-deficiency as shown in XRD patterns. XPS results determined that the transition elements (Co/Fe/Mo) in SxFCM oxides were in a mixed valence state, demonstrating the small polaron hopping conductivity mechanism existed. Among the samples, S1.950FCM presented the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion of 15.62 × 10-6 K-1, the highest conductivity value of 28 S cm-1 at 500 °C, and the lowest interfacial polarization resistance of 0.093 Ω cm2 at 800 °C, respectively. Furthermore, an anode-supported single cell with a S1.950FCM cathode was prepared, demonstrating a maximum power density of 1.16 W cm-2 at 800 °C by using wet H2 (3% H2O) as the fuel and ambient air as the oxidant. These results indicate that the introduction of Sr-deficiency can dramatically improve the electrochemical performance of Sr2Fe1.4Co0.1Mo0.5O6-δ, showing great promise as a novel cathode candidate material for IT-SOFCs.

In this paper, Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.4Nb0.1O6-δ (SFMNb)-xSm0.2Ce0.8O2-δ (SDC) (x = 0, 20, 30, 40, 50 wt%) composite cathode materials were synthesized by a one-pot combustion method to improve the electrochemical performance of SFMNb cathode for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). The fabrication of composite cathodes by adding SDC to SFMNb is conducive to providing extended electrochemical reaction zones for oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). X-ray diffraction (XRD) demonstrates that SFMNb is chemically compatible with SDC electrolytes at temperature up to 1100 °C. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicates that the SFMNb-SDC composite cathodes have a porous network nanostructure as well as the single phase SFMNb. The conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient of the composite cathodes decrease with the increased content of SDC, while the electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) exhibits that SFMNb-40SDC composite cathode has optimal electrochemical performance with low polarization resistance (Rp) on the La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3 electrolyte. The Rp of the SFMNb-40SDC composite cathode is about 0.047 Ω cm2 at 800 °C in air. A single cell with SFMNb-40SDC cathode also displays favorable discharge performance, whose maximum power density is 1.22 W cm-2 at 800 °C. All results indicate that SFMNb-40SDC composite material is a promising cathode candidate for IT-SOFCs.
